bands worth traveling to see

No more SBD's...

They discontinued my favorite ale: Lost Abbey - Judgment Day (quadruple = 10.1% alc/vol).  < I suppose that I should consider myself lucky that they kicked out the beer instead of me.

Free sourdough..oh, nevermind

Did notice that the strict ban on dogs has been lifted, and they are welcome in the back yard on most days.

have they remidied that cullinary faux pa yet?

Billy K?

I remember one day stopping at applejacks in Lahonda, not too far from kesey's old place.

There was like a dozen somewhat pissed off dogs on the porch, staring longingly at the front door.  apparently they had been insiders and regulars, but the health department had dropped by recently and evicted them.

Is that place still around? I loved it, great place to stop for a beer or three on the way back from the coast.

Fish - yes Applejacks is still alive and pouring.  Would bet it is exactly the same as your last visit.

Excellent. I think that was in the early 90s

<<<>>>bands worth traveling to see

this.

I opened for The Dedicated Maniacs at Applejacks a decade ago.  MarkD was streaming and one of the locals saw the screen and yelled "APPLEJACKS IS ON THE INTERNETS?!?!" through his half toothless mouth.

seems like a good place to get your ass kicked.

can't believe its like 30mins from SF....

was like arkansas..

I got half a dozen "fuck you"s within 2 minutes of walking in the door. Loved that place

Saw Phil earlier today.

He did not say fuck you.

I was waiting for that pic from slacker.

I do know of @ least 1 individual Barred from the Cap . . . (((((((Eastie Drama)))))))

Brian Lesh...

Kimock

^^haha, what happened with that?

does jill still do the grilled cheese thing?

Wasn't Mrs Howgoer banned from something for the Chicken Bong Incident?!?

Brian Lesh...<<

Can't believe that took 5+ hours.smiley

>>>>>Can't believe that took 5+ hours.

I'm just glad we got there.

Those peanut butter sandwiches were good.

U know back in the old days

Photo guy Dylan and his allegedly drugged girlfriend... what was her name? Rosalie?

Yes, her name is Rachel Rosalie Prescott, wife of Dylan Carney.   What a bizarre incident!   Didn't hear much from either of them after she threatened her aunt-in-law with legal action from her New York lawyers.

They have a photography business in Destin, Florida now.   I took a quick glance at the website.   He mentions his work with Furthur, but I don't see any Furthur-related or music-related photos displayed on the website.

Florida sounds about right.

That Rosalie and the Roofie thread was gold.

Here are a couple examples of Dylan's photography. They are listed @ $149.99 on his website. www.dylancarney.com

Gee, maybe I can get $150 a pop for my auto-focus snapshots too!

Guess he got rid of the fisheye lens, huh?

Once, I was waiting in line for that back bathroom in the Grate Room. I believe it was supposed to be VIP only, but I think because I was decked out in full Sgt Pepper's regalia that the security guard assumed I was part of the show.

Anyways, I'm standing there and up walks Brian Lesh. I turn and say hello and he seems a bit startled then gives me a cordial greeting with a twinkle in his eye as if to say, "I have seen some crazy shit in my time, my Dad is in the Grateful Dead after all, but for just a moment there, you had me freaked out. Good one."

I wish him well.

Gee, maybe I can get $150 a pop for my auto-focus snapshots too!

I'm curious. Are you saying that photos that were taken with auto-focus aren't "worthy" of being purchased? In reality, metallic prints of that size at $150 each is a fair price...maybe a little bit under what they normally sell for.

Guess he got rid of the fisheye lens, huh?

One of my pet peeves with other photographers is when they overuse a fisheye lens. In the right circumstances it can be killer but once you put up the big bucks for a quality fisheye lens, photographers have a tendency of trying to use it all the time. Maybe it's the photographer trying to get value out of the lens that they just paid a bunch for.  maybe it's because it's a new toy, but normally use subsides quickly.

 >>>>>auto-focus snapshots too

Yes, a good photographer can get some good results from a point and shoot, but those two examples look like the ones of mine that I delete.

And I'm just a hacker.

Surf ~ Almost all high end cameras have auto-focus. That does not make them "point and shoots." While not my cup of tea, there is nothing wrong with the photos Dylan is offering for sale. IMO, they have nice framing and are technically fine. Like most art, purchasing photos is mostly based on personal taste. If you feel your photos are "better" than those referenced, I think you should sell them. At that price point there is a huge market for photos of that kind.

>>Photo guy Dylan and his allegedly drugged girlfriend... what was her name? Rosalie?

lol, good times

forgot all about that incident.

nice pics. they look like zoner pics from vacationing/traveling...$150 lol.

$150 seems steep for those particular images.

>>Florida sounds about right.

you're just mad white socks and sandals aren't acceptable dress in Florida.

$150 seems steep for those particular images.

While I agree the images are a bit generic, $150 for a 20" x 40" metalic print is below what most photographers charge for them.

You know I'm not afraid to pay for quality photos, but those look like something that comes with the picture frame at CVS.

they look way worse then what most zoners post for vacation pics

would you hang one of those photos on your wall, Tony?

Upon closer review, the address for Dylan's photography "business" is located at 625 Harbor Blvd. Otherwise known as the home of Prescott Architects.

One might assume the fashionista's trust fund was revoked and she was called back home, husband in tow.

IMG_3863.JPGBring back Joe Russo!!!!

I suspect that Rachel Rosalie Prescott Carney is relieved that finally there is a woman who fouled up her and her significant other's  existence more than her.  Monalisa Perez's shooting of her husband as a stunt to promote their YouTube site reminds me of how Rosalie used the Zone to destroy a really good thing she and her hubby had going.  Of course, they didn't face prison and a dead spouse.   Monalisa has Rosalie topped.

i have 86'ed myself from the grate room, fuck that weak shit

oh man just listen to that steady unchanging beat koford is laying down layered with ghrame's tinny acoustic strumming and ross james' simplistic rave up guitar solos!

also phil was beaming!

wow!

does txr stay open past 2020?

daylight hates FOTD and Franklins...

OK so they were grilled cheese sandwiches, not peanut butter & jelly.

When they brought them out I was hungry.

I munched on them so quickly, I forgot what they were.

That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

smiley

Bring back Ezra Lipp to the Bar!!!

No Happy Hour anymore??? Damn, I was looking forward to finally getting there in time for that today.

Plus, it looks like every beer is $8 and any beer that's over 6.4% ABV is in a 12 oz (or smaller) vessel.

Am I complaining?  Yes.

Am I still going? Yes

^thats what phil n jill want to hear!

With so much great music out there and a band like Ween touring, why anyone would care about this washed up grateful dead crap is beyond me.

Johnny d gets a pass but that's it.

next step:

annual vip membership.

Ween sucks.

((((EZRA))))

I don't know how financial things work with large restaurants, but overall I'd say the place is extremely successful right now. Every time I'm there the restaurant, bar, patio & the park are all full, with people lining up waiting for tables. Granted, I'm generally only there when there's a show in the Grate Room, but it's pretty clear that most people who are there for the restaurant or the park are a separate crowd than the show goers.

What they've done with that park is the main thing that's really different about the place. Before Phil & Jill took control of that space it was a sad, empty wasteland of weeds & dirt, always deserted except for the occasional homeless person or drug addict passed out in the dark. But all of THAT has been 86'd.

Now it's a very inviting & nice actual little park, and every time I'm there it's filled in the afternoons with families and the awesome sound of kids running around playing, and in the evenings with groups of people having a good time sitting around the fire pits. It's been a complete and slightly amazing transformation.

Along with the daily live music in the bar, and now especially on the weekends with the park going and/or when there's a show in the Grate Room TxR continues to be a really dynamic, unique and very cool place. With groups of people enjoying the restaurant, the bar, the back patio, the park & the Grate Room all at the same time, there can be four or five different scenes happening simultaneously.

I'm looking forward to heading up there tonight to see Karl Denson's Tiny Universe ripping it up in a room less than half the size he usually plays, and Phil sitting in with them for a bit definately won't suck.

As for Phil, his playing continues to be fresh, beautiful and creative, still brilliant after all these years. That he chooses at this point to focus his energy on the Family Band shouldn't be that surprising, and IMO there is no question that the Family Band continues to get better.

Last weeks almost two hour set they played with Keller Williams was ripping good from start to finish. Was it the Grateful Dead in '72 or the Hallowed Q? Of course not, but Phil was fucking great and the show was really good. For me seeing Phil Lesh with a much improved TFB in the Grate Room is entertaining and musically satisfying.

As the saying goes... haters gonna' hate, but even if it's not the epic glory of yesteryear Phil is still brilliant, he continues to play quality, entertaining music and Terrapin Crossroads is a diverse scene that after five years continues to cook with gas.

Carry on.

OK Lance, you convinced me not to sell my KDTU ticket.

TXR is just about smack dab in the middle for three people to meet up from Kenwood, Dogpatch (SF), and San Leandro, respectively.  So, I'll be there shortly.

And I'm looking forward to showing my friends that park that you were talking about.  Maybe play a little bocce ball.

>>>They should hire you, Lance<<<

Damn right they should, but either way I'm no shill.

Every opinion I share are my own, based on my personal experiences.

I know a thing or three about venues and live music and I've spent an inordinate amount of time involved with all that for many, many years. I wouldn't go through all the hassles of getting up to TxR from the south bay and back if I didn't really enjoy the place and (most of) the music I hear there.

Phil has always been the main reason I pile up there, and as long as he continues to play the way he does and his shows continue to be sastifying overall I'll continue to make that effort. If he were playing regularly somewhere else that's where I'd be, but even when he's not there I think TxR has become a very cool and fun place on it's own, and I don't see any reason why that shouldn't continue.

And jeez Johnny, why would you sell your ticket? Denson & his band are excellent and they never play in a room as small as the Grate Room. It should be a smokin' good time!

See you at the show!!!

>everyone is welcome to join the fun with the newly formed Terrapin Crossroads Social Club!<

lol, and there you have it kids

I'm headed down in a few with friend, Andy, who just had California Kind play at his place, Humbrews on July 4

he said they ripped it up

molo on fire, of course - good to hear it's a fun band

he is friends with someone in KDTU so we are all meeting for drinks!

see ya soon :)

I still haven't played Bocce Ball...

I Live TOO Far Away From That Place..... Unless It Was Monumental Barn Burner Bands ......me oh my....

I'm headed down in a few with friend, Andy, who just had California Kind play at his place, Humbrews on July 4>>>

Is that Andy guy from Arcata, or a transplant? No one I know from there has any idea who he is, but most of them aren't big on downtown stuff, they leave it for the college kids and pot tourists. Last time I bothered to check out Humbrews some retired football player owned it but that was well over 15 years ago. Do they still serve pitchers there? Pitrchers were always a big deal with out of towners and the frat crowd. Honestly can't imagine leaving Arcata for a TXR event, I can barely muster the enthusiasm to drive 45 minutes there let alone 4.5 hours. He must have "other business" to attend to in the bay area, I reckon laugh

This is cool, Jam in the Van

http://www.jambands.com/news/2017/07/06/jam-in-the-van-shares-video-of-p...

Love the Mother Hips hat Jason has on  yes

I saw a BW video of Midnight North in Brooklyn doing an acoustic number, and I liked it a lot, but I think it might have been the nips that put it over the top. I caught myself staring at 'em mid-song and wondered where I went for a few moments. Omg.

The football player owned it 30 years ago- 1987.

humbrews pretty good venue.

Haha I lived in Santa Cruz in '87 talk about long ago! Dayum! They still had those big wall decals and Football swag for decor 15 years back, I think a zoner worked there then, Anthony 707(?) - but I could have him confused with a guy from the old DNB board. Nice to know Humbrews is booking bands, there wasn't much for live music in Arcata downtown for a long spell after Cafe Tomo closed. Jambalaya had local jazz mostly, and that was pretty much it. Had to drive to McKrackyville or Eureka to see DNB back then, but the tickets were also $12 and there was plenty of room to dance sooooooooooooooooooo. Good times!

 yes

I think Garcia played there in the 80's, turts, but maybe that was Jambalaya. One of those.

All the people complaining in this thread simply don't get it.

Woz gets Koford.

Also, I watched that jam in the van dreck.  Did Koford put on 75 pounds?

MY this is cool comment was mostly about the van, all the electronics in it. That video HD was top quality as was the sound system all built in. The perfect Man's Cave.

Yeah, sick setup.  Probably way nicer than OGs van.

<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>All the people complaining in this thread simply don't get it.

get what, exactly?

that phil and jill know people will pays $100 (lol) to see koford learn how to play drums while ross james wanks to nowhere land and graham bops  around on stage. nah, we get it. but that shit fucking blows man. ain't nothing good old and psychedelic about it. that's some straight up stale white bread, pure trash.

deal with it.

That bitchslap^ going to leave a mark. lol

shill.jpg

Just teasing ya, Lancey Pants :P

Tonight's free Achilles Wheel show shouldn't suck.

Koford is starting to look like a rehab version of Mickey Thomas.

Re: Humbrews.

The Garcia Band played there in '82 when it was called Mojos.

I saw Phish there in '91 when it was The International Beer Garden. The tickets were $5,

I think there were about 150 people there.

It was a former Oakland Raider that owned it a while ago. Can't remember his name.

I used to know a girl named Caity who dated Trey around 91, she waited tables at Brew'N'Beats. I wonder if they met at that show, or if she was the reason he was in town. Nice gal.

^^the '82 mojo show/chico run was some bad ass garcia band.

so good.

A good friend (who went to the first Covefest) saw that Jerry show, and has introduced me to that guy from Humbrews. Go figure.

I remember your friend and I'm a bit surprised he saw the Jerry show, he seems too young, but what a nice man!

hoodie mafia

I hope Mike Keneally plays Humbrews again
