3:05 p.m. ET: Stocks relapse on news that California is monitoring thousands of potential cases
The Golden State, which on Wednesday reported the first “community spread” case, is now monitoring 8400 people for potential coronavirus infections, according to Governor Gavin Newsom. Stocks had pared the day’s losses, but are now falling back toward session lows.
Getting ready for the possibility of major disruptions is not only smart; it’s also our civic duty
As the new human coronavirus spreads around the world, individuals and families should prepare—but are we? The Centers for Disease Control has already said that it expects community transmission in the United States, and asked families to be ready for the possibility of a “significant disruption to our lives.”
I always keep more food on hand in the winter in light of avalanche danger closing off the road, but made a trip to the "big city" (Montrose) yesterday to top off the shelves.
Considering posting a note in the town's trash barn to urge others to do the same.
So Trump cut CDC funding for global disease outbreaks by 80% and shut down the entire global-health-security unit of the National Security Council. The Trump defenders here seem to be absent in this discussion.
Listening to the experts on NPR, I learned that the good news is that this Coronavirus spares children, most don't seem vulnerable and those who do get it are likely to have minor symptoms and recover quickly. The elderly and those with compromised immune systems or underlying health issues though are fucked. The Trump regime has zero credibility and are incompetent. If and when a vaccine is available the Trump regime made no assurances that it will be available to all Americans - because pharmaceutical companies need to profit. And of course Trump's solution is More tax cuts for the rich.
Absolutely no way to contain the spread of this very contagious virus because not all people show symptoms and not nearly enough testing is available. Experts are now predicting that most of us will become infected and/or carriers of this Coronavirus. Best possible outcome is a vaccine soon and good universal health care and treatment for those who experience life threatening symptoms.
expect major disruptions to everything- schools will likely close and other business shut down as more people fall ill. And yes, it does have a higher mortality rate for adults than the seasonal flu. recession is coming, bigly
>>>>Absolutely no way to contain the spread of this very contagious virus
Agreed. Someone in the ritzy Portland suburb of Lake Oswego just came down with it. The person works at a school out there and had it for 10 days before it was detected.
I bought a six pack of Corona beer today to bring to a get together this evening as a gag. Never bought that crap before and it was $10 a fucking six pack.
Trump and Pence's press conference was on the radio this morning and when they said they were going to announce new travel restrictions, I was like please don't say Philippines and Japan (going there in two weeks), but then they said just Iran. Figures and thought there was already a travel ban on them. Keeping my fingers crossed.
FWIW, the annual flu shots are based on what happened during Australia's winter (our summer). Gives them a few months to come up w/ vaccines before our flu season starts. There's never a perfect correlation, so some flus will be covered and some won't. This flu should have a vaccine up in a few months. So far, the stats that i've seen (and assuming their validity), aren't much different than any nasty flu bug (compare to the last pandemic, H1N1, which was during my hospital tenure). But it's another opportunity to make tRump look completely incompetent, so i'm fine w/ that... science / medicine will contine no matter how hard the republican't puritans try to destroy and unfund it....
We are up at the mountain skiing, but my wife keeps getting texts from friends about the giant lines at Fred Meyer and Costco. People are stocking up like it's Snowmageddon
I went to Costco this morning and it like Coronapocolypse. Super crowded, big run on nitrile gloves, toilet paper, bottled water and canned food. I stocked up on beer and chips. Not going to live in fear.
>...There are now COVID-19 cases around the world, and epidemiological data from tens of thousands of cases. Here’s what we know: no doubt to the relief of parents everywhere, this disease is mild to nonexistent in children. There are almost no pediatric deaths and very few kids even seem to fall sick (though children may still be having clinically barely detectable cases, thus infecting others).
On the other hand, for the elderly or for people who have other diseases or comorbidities, it’s very serious, with death rates reaching up to 15 percent. It’s also a great threat to health workers who handle people with the virus every day, with thousands of cases already. Overall, it appears to have a case fatality rate around 2 percent, which is certainly very serious: seasonal flu, a serious threat in and of itself, has a case fatality rate around 0.1 percent in the United States, so this coronavirus is about 20 times as deadly (though again, this number may get much better or worse depending on the kind of care we can provide).*..
There are also enough examples of mild or barely symptomatic COVID-19 cases and a long enough incubation period that this disease will almost certainly not be contained: we can’t expect to reliably detect everyone who’s ill and infectious, as we could with the SARS 2003 epidemic where the victims always exhibited high fever and thus were easier to identify and isolate.
All of this means that the only path to flattening the curve for COVID-19 is community-wide isolation: the more people stay home, the fewer people will catch the disease. The fewer people who catch the disease, the better hospitals can help those who do. Crowding at hospitals doesn’t just threaten those with COVID-19; if emergency rooms are overwhelmed, more flu patients, too, will die because of lack of treatment, for example.
Community-wide isolation also means that people will depend on deliveries for essentials: in ground-zero of Hubei, for example, that’s what’s happening. But there are only so many delivery workers and while deliveries are better than people going shopping, it’s still a risk to everyone involved. So if fewer people need deliveries, then fewer people will get sick, and more people who need help such as the elderly can still get deliveries as the services will be less overwhelmed.
Here’s what all this means in practice: get a flu shot, if you haven’t already, and stock up supplies at home so that you can stay home for two or three weeks, going out as little as possible. The flu shot helps decrease the odds of having to go to the hospital for the flu, or worse yet, get both flu and COVID-19; comorbidities drastically worsen outcomes.
Staying home without needing deliveries means that not only are you less likely to get sick, thus freeing up hospitals for more vulnerable populations, it means that you are less likely to infect others (while you may be having a mild case, you can still infect an elderly person or someone with cancer or another significant illness) and you allow delivery personnel to help out others.
If you are in a position of authority, that means figuring out how to help people stay at home, by preparing for and allowing for remote work, or allowing for future work to make up for missed days and other similar plans. Households and others who employ part-time help can do this, too: continue paying the cleaners; it can be reconciled later: without pay, people will not be able to prepare and or stay home.
If you live in a regular household, here’s a handy, one-page guide on what you need, with up-to-date information on top, but it is essentially this: potable water (that’s a general just-in-case item for all emergencies), shelf-stable food (doesn’t need refrigeration, again just-in-case), your prescription medication and a few basic medical supplies (first aid/your usual over-the-counter meds). Depending on the composition of your household, things to keep you busy (books, board games, toys)....
...As a society, there are much larger conversations to be had: about the way our health care industry runs, for example. How to handle global risks in our increasingly interconnected world. How to build resilient communities. How to reduce travel for work.
Those are all important discussions, and nothing in this short article replaces that. However, the practical steps facing households are immediate and important; for the sake of everyone else, prepare to stay home for a few weeks. You’ll reduce your own risks, but most importantly, you will reduce the burden on health care and delivery infrastructure and allow frontline workers to reach and help the most vulnerable.
>A huge proportion of American workers simply don’t have the economic power to stay home, whether to care for family members or even to give themselves a chance to recover from a viral infection in solitude, or the legal right to take off from work without losing their jobs or pay.
Millions of Americans, moreover, don’t have access to healthcare without shouldering significant bills. That will keep many people out of doctors’ offices or even emergency rooms where they might be screened for the novel coronavirus.
You'd think people might be ready for leadership who believe in science and promote universal health care - the Trump regime wouldn't commit to making a vaccine available and affordable, and continue to label the risks of the novel Coronavirus a 'hoax'
WHAT ! You WANT A PANCAKE FACE FAKE HAIR Corrupt CLOWN Again ? Get TO YOUR VOTING BOOTH And Get This STUPID Trump Dude OUTTA Here !! ENOUGH OF THIS BOZO. ENOUGH
> Last evening dining out with friends, one of their uncles, who's graduated with a master's degree and who worked in Shenzhen Hospital (Guangdong Province, China) sent him the following notes on Coronavirus for guidance:
1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold
2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of just 26/27 degrees. It hates the Sun.
4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.
5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours - so if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands as soon as you can with a bacterial soap.
6. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent will kill it.
7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink liquids with ice.
8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.
9. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.
10. Can't emphasise enough - drink plenty of water!
THE SYMPTOMS
1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat lasting 3/4 days
2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days further.
3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like you're drowning. It's imperative you then seek immediate attention.
I just thought we might want to have that information and have a discussion as a community about how to slow its progress in case the virus is already spreading in the community.
Democrats want people to die so it hurts the administration politically
Pence defended the President's son, Donald Trump Jr., for saying that Democrats were rooting for "millions" of Americans to die so the coronavirus could hurt Trump politically. And he complained that a President -- who has done more to coarsen public life than any other modern politician -- had been the target of "very strong rhetoric" from his opponents and the media.
When Greg was doing chemo we were keenly aware that with such a suppressed immune system we had to be careful all the time. Use your elbow to hit the elevator button, use automatic door openers if possible instead of opening doors with hands (hit with elbow), bump elbows instead of shaking hands or hugs, etc., and wash your hands when you walk in the door at home. Using 60% or higher isopropyl alcohol wipes, or 60% or higher alcohol hand sanitizer... all that.
I visited some friends last weekend and the daughter of one them, a woman who lives in Beijing, was there with her infant son. They had come to the states to escape the confines of quarantine. She said it was very other worldly there.
What sucks is that we can't even trust the CDC now that Trump has politicized this pandemic. Can't trust the test kits either, according to the whistleblower. Trump's team are committed to giving dear leader the results he wants, so if he continues to claim that there is no Coronavirus pandemic then appropriate government response and accurate reporting of the disease and it's spread will never happen.
I am not sure that everything on that list I shared from my neighbor is 100 percent accurate, but I trust the Chinese more that the Trump regime.
The need for antibacterial soap is questionable as it's a virus - and the expert on NPR said it wasn't necessary. Regular soap will do just fine
PS
Our son is a Kindergarten teacher in Shanghai. He was in the Philippines for about a month during outbreak and is now back in China waiting for school to reopen, so yeah I've been following the pandemic closely.
Everyone living in China has been quarantined for at least 2 weeks - and anyone showing any symptoms has been removed for additional quarantine and testing. They can bit travel if they're not well and unlikely to be carriers of if virus at this stage.
5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours - so if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands as soon as you can with a bacterial soap.<<<
Nope, and most experts say antibacterial soap is unnecessary. Of course you want to avoid bacterial infections when there's a pandemic. But it mostly about using any soap and washing correctly
I went to Fred Meyer yesterday and at the entrance to the store they were setting up big displays of all sorts of sanitizing wipes and sprays, along with jugs of bottled water. I don't think the virus is going to mess with the public water supply.
My next-door neighbor just had half the store at Costco delivered to her house. Huge amount of groceries delivered by her garage - stacks of boxes. I don't think she's going to be leaving the house anytime soon - totally freaking out. They have one middle school kid and a high school student. I'm guessing they're going to be keeping them home from school.
I was half-joking in the original post but any time I catch a glimpse of his daily press conferences I think, holy shit we are fucked with this guy in charge.

But it's another opportunity to make tRump look completely incompetent, so i'm fine w/ that... science / medicine will contine no matter how hard the republican't puritans try to destroy and unfund it....

https://blogs
https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/preparing-for-coronavi...
>...There are now COVID-19 cases around the world, and epidemiological data from tens of thousands of cases.

Some good information here:
Some good information here:

Wash your hands! I'll wash my hands!

What sucks is that we can't
