Trucks Q

The Jesse Collin Young thread reminded me of the great version of "Get Together" that I saw at my first Phil show so I dug it up and took a listen

The Q with Derek instead of Jimmy.  Pretty amazing set, back when the songs where almost afterthoughts.  Worth your while.

Thanks, Thom.

Not the best recording, but the energy comes through loud and clear.  I remember walking out after this just being stunned at how good it was.  Also my first introduction to Warren and Derek.  Walked in bummed that Kimock had bailed on the tour, walked out saying "Steve who?"

And Phil came out during Dylan's set and sat in for Not Fade Away.

I hit the Worcester show on this tour for my first Phil & Friends experience.  It was so good that I ended up taking two personal days at school to do the Barton Hall show the next night.  That one was a hard ticket find outside the show but I was not to be denied.  I got one more in at UMass too.  I remember just how good and "Grateful Dead" sounding those shows were, realizing just how much Phil on bass was necessary to produce what my brother and I called "The Big Sound".  Yeah,...........back in the 1900's!

That was such a fun year for Phil shows

Just some good, clean, fin de siecle fun.

"realizing just how much Phil on bass was necessary to produce what my brother and I called "The Big Sound"."

I had that flash at the Other Ones show in '98 at Nissan Pavilion in Virginia.  As soon as Phil hit his first note I felt like I was home again.

"Right, THAT'S what I've been missing!"

^^^^^This.

Jesse Colin Young had the hit with Get Together - but the song was from Dino Valenti of Quicksilver.

I've always loved Nick Gravenites version of it...

I had fallen out of all things dead after Jerry died, other than still list3ning to old tapes, and then I heard somewhere that Phil had a band. I had a friend download me a show and it was the New Jersey show from this tour that opened with Get Together. It was a slow rumbling build up and then phil's voice just rumbled out with the opening lyrics and I was like WOW, I need me some of this. The rest of the show was a smoker. I think that was in 00 and then 4/15/01 I got me some on the third night of the tour. I still kick myself for not going to those two tour opening shows at Sunrise in south fla. Have not missed Phil since in the sunshine state

The shows with Derek are very under rated, and rank up there with the Q.

>>>and then 4/15/01

I jumped on that tour with this show and followed it through to Charlotte, NC.  My only regret is that I was unaware of the free show at U of WV as I could have hit it on the way home.  The five shows I did see fell perfectly in to my week of for April break that year.  Some of my colleagues couldn't quite understand how I put 5000 miles on my car that week driving to Florida and back.

Wish I would of caught that Charlotte show, Rob. I remember following the setlists of that tour like  baseball box scores every show.

Went to the Temple show the next night, didn't like the song selection for the last half of the show but it was still another strong performance.  The Unbroken was fantastic, finally got to hear one played the way it deserved to be treated.  And I remember Susan being pulled up onto the stage by Derek from the front row.

'99

Did the Warfield Billy K., Nelson, Kimock run...

Denver Filmore, Red Rocks, Eugene, and the Greeks

Bought tickets for the whole '99 Fall Tour. Loaded up the Family in the RV and went from Champaign, IL. Til the last show at U Mass.

All because we love Kimock...

When we saw the quote "I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm no more" etc. when we checked the website the morning of the Oxford, Ohio show. Wind definitely was lost in the sails. Actually ran into Phil and Jill that morning uptown and it was like nothing happened.

Paul Barrere and Billy Payne came on and to my ears definitely a WTF... Little Feat they're good, Dead material? Yawn.

Was relieved in Michigan when Warren, Derek, and Headband came on. They opened with a 30+ minute Terrapin then into Footprints by Wayne Shorter.

Although it was not Kimock...

Things only got better and more exciting each night from there on!

As long as we're talking Derek and The Q.....

Denver Fillmore, 4/4/02 with Derek sitting in for the entire second set.

I flew out to these shows to hook up with a good friend from my SF days that I hadn't seen since early 1979 at a Spectrum show when I drove back east to finish college after seeing the closing of Winterland.  He saw me on the Zone and we arranged to have me come out to see him the next time Phil played the Fillmore.  Great time, and this second set is one for the ages.

PNC Center in NJ 7/12/02  Derek sits in for most of the second set.  Never cared for the venue but another strong showing.

Love the arrangement of Terrapin from 1999.  And although he sounded awful doing it I loved Phil singing In Your Eyes.
