Trey ripping off Pantera

Forums:

Just had this pointed out to me by my metal head friend Ole. It appears that the riff for the Phish song, “Tweezer”, is ripped off from a Pantera song, “Killers”, that was released in 1984.

Hear for yourselves:

Pantera, Killers: https://youtu.be/4dnaYUwe3-U

Phish, Tweezer: https://youtu.be/c2-Tf4T1r2s

Maybe Trey’s admiration of Jimmy Page has gotten a little out of hand.

HUGE if true.

I like Faux-Carlos Trey better.

Definitely a resemblance.

Funny seeing hair metal-era Pantera. Good stuff.

yes bucky. it is known.

also, you can tell your friend

possum is "swamp music"

and

farmhouse is "no woman no cry"

there are others.

<<<HUGE if true

lol. it wasn't even huge when it came up years and years ago.

Is this the guy whose pinning was "huge"?

This would only b huge if Darrell bought his first dimebag off of trey.

What stupid lyrics on the tweezer song. Had to shut it off after a couple minutes. Pantera’s version is better.

I too,

Weep in sympathy with the faux - Xoners crying about Panera - ripoffs.

Panera supplies frozen - supermarket style soup,  salad  and wheat - bread to the Generation of Mediocrity.

It is the Celebration of Blandness.

Reba is "Dinah Moe Humm"

Someone call Gail!

>>>>>lol. it wasn't even huge when it came up years and years ago.

This.

He ripped the opening piano chords from the intro of “So What” for a terrible joke of a tune called “them from the bottom”. White guitarists are so unoriginal

Bathtub Gin is lifted from Rhapsody in Blue.

Seems like there should be a database of this sort of shit.

Databases are for people who care ....

"Ghost" is clearly derivative of "Singing in the Rain"

Meat Stick is an obvious play on Fire on the Mountain.

Where is the public radio outrage over "All Things Reconsidered"?

Meat stick, lol. Wtf kinda shit is that song man?

as Fire on the mountain, it’s kinda hard to trademark an A to a b chord.

As per the internet...

"The story behind MEATSTICK is in the Phish Book, told by Page, and has to do
with a drunken all-nighter in Vienna.  After depleting the hotel room mini-bar, all that was left was the meatsticks...so it was Time for the meatstick"

There's a dance too, Timpane

Phish actually ripped off Lenny Kravitz, Lenny ripped off Dimebag.... (sarcasm alert)

If we want to talk about Farmhouse there are no less than 200 songs that cop the same similar chord progression.

In the end it's about being able to work within the constraints of the guitar to write a good song.

The Meatstick is the Macarena of the new millennium.

Jonas, I know people use common chord progressions, but listen to this one from the recent New Years run.

Hes literally playing No Woman, No Cry.

(and I say that as someone who hates the over/wrong use of literally)

Trey even rips himself off.

Shimmy Shack is just Ya Mar

^For sure, Tim.

Heck Rift is nothing but With

Rift is the only phish album I enjoyed. It’s good up until horse.

Brian d has a comb over.

Guy -- hes just fucking with you Phishie's drug addled minds.  I'm the last guy to defend Phish but the verse is similar with a bit of a change up, then there's the Am part(I only know because I had to play some dreadies wedding last year -- 25 Phish songs...ughh(lol)..)   Out of all the derivative players Trey, with obvious influence, is on the low end of ripping off.

I'm happy to see, possibly, the first Pantera reference on this board!  Post Pantera(and a little more accessible) check out DOWN-A Bustle in Your Hedgerow

^^^This scumbag again?

Wave that Flag"is a RIP off of US Blues...and has anybody noticed the similarities between Women are Smarter and Iko Iko?

Also Ocelot and Alaska are the same song. Trey is a blatant ripper offer, but he's basically the music nerd in all of us who is a prep school dude who can't really write or sing but turned out to be able to play guitar well after working hard at it and was able to use his music training to channel (blatantly) his influences into a band that other hippy prep schoolers loved

No, I think it's more just that Trey is fucking great. Writing songs is a different animal and everybody rips off somebody to one degree or another, but his vision is still his own, and his amazing overall track record of success is undeniable.

Dude is just great.

Has anyone listened to Analyze Phish? Good stuff.

<<I'm happy to see, possibly, the first Pantera reference on this board

You mean since the last time I brought this topic up?

Having blissfully spent my life avoiding Pantera this is not an issue for me.

Guy- I would have acknowledged if I remembered.  Dime's murder had been talked about.   But, yeah.....produce the emails or it didn't happen.

Daily I drive by that 'hippy prep school' that Trey & a bunch of other successful entitled kids went.   In that graduating class Adam Duritz went one way, Trey the complete musical opposite. In the end they both made loads of $$.

>>>Daily I drive by that 'hippy prep school' that Trey & a bunch of other successful entitled kids went.

This comes off like something posted out of jealousy until I realized you also posted this as well which sort of confirmed my thought.

>>>I had to play some dreadies wedding last year

I am sincerely sorry you have to play phish songs at weddings, dude.

Wtf are you babbling about?  My post was in response to that post and I even ended with 'they both did well' type statement.  You're completely the worst at zoning. Honestly I don't think I can remember someone that's as bad as you.

And the dreadie thing,,,,again my apologies that you suck at interpreting a post.

>>>>>You're completely the worst at zoning. Honestly I don't think I can remember someone that's as bad as you.

Let us never forget to remember Gitmo, Doobious, and Tulsa.

ATGD had one of the better entrances to the zone.  That’s worth something.

'Kirley's a fat douche' wasn't all that novel of an idea at that point....

Phish/Trey on all fronts, still a passionate debate after all these years.

Brings out the best in us.

Carry on...

This seems like a good time to wag the shamey digit at Bonnie Dobson, who used the chords from I Know You Rider for Morning Dew.

Did the boys ever go from the last chord of Rider straight into the Dew? Too lazy to look it up just now.

BOTH Tweezer AND Killers are rip offs of The Kinks:

every musician/band uses what they have heard when creating music. Everyone. I find Phish vital right now, a great jam and they provide good times. So I go a couple shows a year and hope they take me out there. Ta boot.

Check out all his videos...a true musical genius

Thank you Zang.  I like to think he’s related to JeffG

Please tell me you watched more than one.

>>>>>>Please tell me you watched more than one.

3 and I’m going back for more today.

The clothespins is where he loses me.   He doesn't need that shit.   Stick to what you're good at.

Phil's done some dew>riders and rider>dews.

Weak, lazy ass segue & song pairing of u ask me.

His ( the dude in Zang's link) cover of Oasis' Wonderwall is my favorite.

Zang, will you record a video of you singing that Smashmouth song over Sugaree?

I'll get right on that....except, of the two of us you are the musician, so maybe you can do it for me.

There's a Febreze ad being broadcast these days that has a little keyboard ditty towards the end. It's a total rip-off of Saw it Again.
