Todd Snider does Dead

Forums:

I don't really "get" this guy but some people are really into him.  I've seen him live with his band, but wasn't too impressed.

I do appreciate the gravely voice, compared to say, a Trey high school voice.

He seems so 'disorganized" when he plays and I hear it's genuine. Nothing wrong with genuine musicians. Maybe I'll give him more of a listen sometime.

(However, Jorma is filling the solo singer/songwriter spot for now.)

I like him solo without a band. I've seen some great shows that way. Became a disciple. Band, not into it. Really clever writer. But meeting him in person on his bus was a disappointment.

I liked him in the Hard Working Americans. That is the only time I have seen him though. I may give his solo stuff a listen this evening. Here is a video from their show at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta a few years back.

This is so bad, I will never forgive you for posting

i tried washing it from my ears but no luck

Been a big fan of Tod since I saw him open for John Prine and Iris Dement t the Warfield in the mid-90s. That version of Brokedown is not good but noy what Todd does either....

well its not polished because it's off the cuff.

i liked it.

Haven't heard a lot but I've liked everything I've heard.

Til nowsmiley

I caught Todd at TXR with Neal Casal and it was a phenomenal show.

I have seen him live probably a dozen times. The band shows were never as strong as his solo shows. The guy is a great writer and storyteller and an engaging personality.  And I  think we got a shot at the state championship this yr.

A few weeks ago on his Sunday morning stream he did a mini dead trifecta of Mr. Charlie, Alabama Getaway, I need a Miracle. Ya don't hear those songs done solo acoustic very often. A little rough around the edges but yea, off the cuff, which gives it some flavor.

Starts around the 50 minute mark.

His show featuring Jimmie Buffet tunes was good too.

BIG FAN HERE

Todd is just an all around fantastic person. He's been doing Sunday morning services from the "First Agnostic Church Of Hope And Wonder" since last May.
He's a great storyteller and has some really amazing songs of his own. During the weekly broadcasts he's covered a bunch of tunes and some have been pretty good.

Big laugh, Mark. Great story. His solo live shows are the shit. Like you say "great writer and storyteller and an engaging personality."

There's so many great songs. Folks who D/L some live stuff will find treasure.

Here's his live DVD "The Stortyteller" on You Tube. Backed with a band but much like a solo show. GREAT stuff.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMRCw6dG0G4

Todd acoustic under the big Oak crushed at Mt.Aire 99

I was there. I volunteered that weekend and helped Todd park his van. He was super nice. His set under the Oak was a highlight that weekend for me.

I saw him open at the Fillmore for Prine in the 90s.  Beer Run is classic, but my "new" favorite is Looking for a Job.

A few years ago, when I was unhappy at a then-relatively new job, I would crank "Looking for a Job" in my office just to  keep myself sane.  That song is an updated and much wittier spin, if you will, on "Take This Job and Shove It" sentiment.

^ That TXR show was great!

Is that Hurlbut at the beginning?

Horseshoe Lake is on of my favs. Always gets me to sing along when it comes on the radio

I keep seeing this thread as "Todd Snider is dead".

Glad that's not true, but I'm not a fan.

Personally, I don't like jabbering from the stage, story telling, humor or "deep meaning" in the songs, yadda yadda yadda.

That's the very first thing I loved about the Grateful Dead the first time I saw them, before I had any real clue about anything else - no talking from the stage.

I can talk with the best of them, I was paid well to do it for a very long time. Everybody can talk. I don't go to shows to listen to stories or cute anecdotes or funny funny or whatever from musicians.

Shut up and play your guitar.

But that's just me.

It leaves one more space at his shows for the rest of you.

^Musically discerningier than thou.

Lance, there's some teenagers cutting across your lawn. If you hurry there's still time to turn the sprinklers on cheeky

lol

I'm not sure what age or aging has to do with it.

Even when I was young I was never interested in or entertained by musicians chatting and telling cute little stories.

Maybe you all like that.

Fine.

Not me.

It's just preferences.

Anyway, I'm glad he's not dead.

Not a fan of Arlo either then, I guess. Different strokes. Enjoy what ya like, friend.

Good news!  Just got an e-mail from the venue.  The April 16, 2020 Todd show I bought a ticket for and held on to has been rescheduled for Oct 25th!  Things are looking up!
