Jerome John Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995)

No Dead shows on this date & only the last 2 shows of the excellent Summer '82 tour on August 8th & 10th.  There may have been a show on the rooftop of the Chelsea Hotel in NYC on the 10th in '67.

Ran a takeout restaurant on this sad day, around lunch time heard the news.  The radio station I had on made the announcement, at the same time Joan Baez was in the studio recording a World Cafe segment.  She came out & sang Amazing Grace.

I saw the Garcia Band at the Stone in SF on 8/9/85.

Nagasaki was bombed 8/9/45

Grateful Dead were to play Sandstone Amphitheater in Bonner Springs Kansas on 8/9/86 but Garcia's coma got in the way of that.

The JGB 2CD live album (released 8/91) featured live versions of:

Get Out My Life Woman

Waiting for a Miracle

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

That Lucky Old Sun (Just Rolls Around Heaven All Day)

that were all recorded at The Warfield on 8/9/90 - 5 years to the day before Garcia's death.

On August 9, 1974 Richard Milhous Nixon became the first American president to resign from office.
Attended a kegger party someone threw in honor of the occasion.
Used to call August 9 "Nixon Day" every year until the 80s, when it became apparent Americans could choose a more dangerous president.
In 1995 the date became a sad day, rather than the happy day it was in 1974.
Still celebratory now, but for a much different reason. Thanks for the music, Jerry!

And there's this (thanks Robin for posting it on Facebook)

Jerry died VW ad.jpg

And this:

I was panning gold on the Shasta River in northern Cali....  had 3.5 grams in one pan (sniping bedrock), most i've ever had in a single pan before.

That evening, something felt weir(d), so I hiked up the hillside to where the car was parked, turned on the AM radio (mountains and all), and all I got was right wing radio, with the hot subject being Jerry's passing.  As expected, their tribute was all about his success as a capitalist selling his ties...   very little on his music.

Instead of hanging for a few more days, I drove back home, had a pile of messages on the answering machine (played in several bands back then, with the psychedelic one - Acid Reign, known for doing stretched out jams, and doing several dead tunes, I was the closest thing to a Jerry clone in town.)

Shasta River gold and garnets   ( I can't help but think Jerry helped me find this )

Thanks for all the fun Jer, thanks again tapers

It's funny, as I look again at the image I just posted without thinking about it too much, I'm now reminded of something someone said to me, emphatically, a very long time ago... "Don't tell me how to feel!!!"

Coming from that particular person that was a very powerful lesson, one that I have carried with me since, one that has served me well in my professional & personal life.

So, go ahead and be sad, or happy, or angry, or however you feel, because that's how you feel, but for me personally the basic sentiment remains - that we are so lucky to have been exposed to that man and his music.

Checking myself completed, carry on.

I was out of the country and out of the loop when he died. Didn't find out until 6 months later when I returned to the States. Wasn't that shocked.
