They make airbags for people now.

When my mother broke her hip in a fall some years ago it was a real drag. She had to go to a rehab facility that she hated, it's hard to get actual good and attentive care at many of them.  

I don't see how this would have prevented the fracture; it looks like it inflates after contact is made with the floor. Maybe I'm just not seeing it

No, it detects when you are falling and fires in 280ms - before you hit the ground.

Using gyroscopes and accelerometers, the Hip'Air' can detect a fall within 200 milliseconds of it beginning. The belt will then begin to deploy its built-in airbag, which takes a further 80 milliseconds
