Is there a time limit for it to be a dessert vs. a snack?

Forums:

Let's say you start dinner at 6pm and finish in short order at 6:12pm.

At 6:20 you start eating ice cream for dessert.

What if you didn't have that ice cream until 7:30pm, would it still be dessert?  What about 9pm?

An ice cream cone by any other name is still an ice cream cone.

Dessert is eaten within the confines of a meal, FOM. If you get up from that meal then the meal is over and you aren't eating desert any more.

It all has to do with getting up from the table and ending the meal. Anyone who tells you any different is a liar.

What if one politely excuses oneself to go to the restroom and returns, then what???

FOM since you have baby carrots for dessert, yes, they are a snack.

Taj on Baseline has great Gajar Ka Halwa for "dessert".   Would it be too much to ask them to let me "back" for a helping of it from the buffet if I went downstairs for a cup of coffee in between the main course?
