Although Trump claims to be an isolationist (which is not necessarily a bad thing), he really doesn't know what he is doing and can't imagine he is giving much effective direction for either covert or overt military operations, resulting in a very scattered foreign policy.   Since Trump took office, the country's military adventures in Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and yes, even Syria, have increased in both pace and scope, but seem sorely lacking of any coherent policy or end game.  

In Syria, for example, the US has been conducting overt military strikes against pro-Assad forces, are setting up bases, and appear to be digging in for the long haul.  Perhaps the end of the covert supplying of anti-Assad forces referenced in the Washington Post article is just the result of ratcheting up of overt support and increasing American boots on the ground.   Once ISIS is kicked out of Raqqa, you will have the Americans and the Kurds on one side, the Syrians, Russians, and Iranians on another side, and the Turks with their allied fighters on still another side.

What could possibly go wrong?

Here's my empirical observation about the military. Mind you, I've talked with a lot of kids coming out of HS to the military. Very, very few are doing it for the free college, and most know there's a chance of deployment. The recruiters do like to tell them that they'll have "choice" in assignments, and don't tell them that war trumps choice. Unless they score really high on ASVABs, they are fodder.

Interesting fact: there's a program fully funded by the federal government that gets migrant workers their GEDs. It gives them a tablet and WiFi to study on, then they take the test for free, in Spanish, and get to keep the tablet. Even under Trump, enrollment isn't based on documentation.

BUT, from what I know about the arming of anti-Assad rebels, it was a complete disaster and disservice to the people opposing Assad.  (And I think that this started well before Russia became involved in Syria,but I could be wrong about that part)

So, I'm glad that it will be discontinued.

This is generally true.  One can argue that Ike sending the Marines into Lebanon in 1958 turned out ok, as did the First Gulf War in 1991, but otherwise American military intervention over there has been a confused, messy cluster fuck.

Riddle me this Batman.   What are the genuine US interests in the Middle East?   Most of that oil goes to Japan, South Korea, and other countries.  The US doesn't need it.   If oil is the reason for a military presence, shouldn't it be South Koreans and the Japanese over there protecting the flow?   If Putin wants to send Russian kids to die in the dust of of the Syrian Civil War, why should that be our problem?
