capital of the east? might be in the future. thailand is well known amongst headie traveling kids and those types as a major destination for psychedelic parties. the culture and infrastructure is there.
but the real question for me is - what is the climate like? if you cant grow high quality outdoor or greenhouse in most of the country, its not going to be a weed capital of anything, and afaik much of thailand is rainforest and thus not suitable for cannabis cultivation outside of heavily controlled indoor operations or legacy thai strains adapted to the climate. and as much as i know many here have very fond memories of thai stick and other cannabis purportedly sourced from thailand in decades past, those types of "sativas" do not really have the strength or quality of aroma to match modern US strains, and even if they did, the classic "sativa" high isnt what most people these days are looking for, its more of a small niche in the cannabis market.
i fully expect thailand to eventually have a major cannabis industry that will profit greatly due to the types of people from the US, SA or NA that tend to visit thailand for adventure, but i dont see it competing in any way with the agricultural output or strength of the culture we have today in california.
i honestly dont think there can be a new "cannabis capital" of the world like amsterdam once was or CA is today. a long history of black market production and culture is required for that, and outside of countries like afghanistan, morocco or india that likely wont be in a position to be a tourist or industry capital of anything in our lifetimes, the major areas that have that history are amsterdam and california. of course that history spreads out over both of their respective countries, but cali and amsterdam were/are at the center of everything. erecting an entirely new cannabis culture based around widely accepted commercial industry and giant cannabis corporations is totally missing the point.
