Texas power grid failing, millions at risk of freezing

Forums:

Nice work, free market.

Wow, really scary conditions around the country, and they're going to be around for a few days. Good luck to y'all. Stay safe. Watch out for your neighbors, especially the elderly, if you can.

And it's not just 1.6 million without power in Texas. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/texas-winter-storm_n_602a6757c5b6f88289fd...

From the link:

"Around 5,000 Oklahoma Gas & Electric customers were without power overnight, and Entergy Arkansas logged about 3,000 outages. Both states have much smaller populations compared to Texas.

Officials in Houston had warned people to prepare for outages and hazardous roads — conditions similar to what residents might see in the wake of a Category 5 hurricane.

“There (have) been numerous reports of accidents from icing recently,” National Weather Service lead forecaster Bob Oravec said Monday. “I think there’s going to be a big threat today as the system pushes northeastward.”

Accumulating ice between a tenth and a quarter of an inch (0.25 and 0.6 centimeters) was possible across eastern Louisiana, Mississippi, central Tennessee, Kentucky and over into the West Virginia and Ohio border region, Oravec said.

Up to 12 inches of snow was expected across parts of the southern Plains into Monday, said Marc Chenard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center."

Computer freeze up. Double post.

Currently minus 8F here. It's been single digits for the past few days and colder at night. Today might get up to 20 above.

It will be all better after the secession

Can you heat your house with torches?

I guess Texas Is turning Blue.

Yeah Sigmund, they got a bunch of damned socialists living there now expecting help from the gub'mint. So much for independence.

We have been snowed in since Friday and a half inch of new ice is coating everything this morning.   Surprised we still have power.   They say the thaw is coming today.

Slick maybe Jesus just hates Texas,,,?

Ken you have power? Lucky!

I'm typing this on my work cell phone because it's Verizon...my personal phone is charged, but my TMobile service isn't working.

Power outage is expected to last until Wednesday!

Lots of tree damage up here from the ice... still can't move car out...

Stay Warm all you Texicans. Rather unseasonable Weather conditions there currently.

Over the pandemic I have been reading up / looking into solar for a conversion van, but also as a secondary power source in the event of outages.   This guy on YouTube seems to have quite a following.  Here's his $702 "milk crate" DIY solar generator:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFLYIlCwE6w

... not sure this would solve a heating issue by itself, but at least it'd be something to keep laptop/phone charged and maybe allow you to operate some other small appliances.  You can probably scale up batter7 & inverter with twice capacity for an additional $300-$500

Texas AG files to sue Mother Nature...

But Face (not buttface), how much solar will be generated in a snow storm?

Good one Wally.

Very true while in the midst and depends on how long it lasts, but it's nice to have at least one cycle of the battery's capacity available.  Once the storm moves on, the power might still be out for a while.

Just another sign of my dolthood I suppose, but I have a hard time imagining how Houston Texas, way down there, gets blasted with snow & ice?

I've lived much farther north in the Bay Area for 60 years and there's been one snow day, which absolutely blew everyone's mind, and it melted away by the afternoon.

I just don't understand weather.

ewishjay eatherway achinemay.

Just sayin'.

I need to confirm with G-reg first.

Who's G-reg?

Rolling blackouts are going on in my area today.  3 degrees this morning.

Hope y'all gots a woodstove y'all

>>I need to confirm with G-reg first.

I think the large majority of us are in agreement that G-reg sucks- with that said, we don't need to bring him up in threads that, thankfully, he is not a part of (yet).

>>>3 degrees this morning.

Damn- I'm in Rhode Island and it's 55 degrees F out right now.

OOOF. Remember when Texas Repubs were touting their energy independence and how rolling blackouts that happen in CA were the result of bad Dem policies?

It's not about need, Jay.

It's about mocking his stupid, obnoxious, troll ass.  But thanks for weighing in.

My buddy near Salem OR has been without power for 5 days now thanks to the ice storms

OOOF. https://twitter.com/jackievenson/status/1361739002492182528?s=20 Spoiler Alert....they shut it down on purpose.

I'm sure Tucker will bring that up^^^

it's called the jet stream lance.

Cant believe Texas let some snowflakes shut it down.

The mayor of Colorado City Texas has some thoughts on people in need.

Ice storm was nasty - lotsa folks still without POWAH. - Looks like a war zone........ (in Salem )

Did you get you power back on Llollo?

Sunday night's ice storm caused the largest power outage in Oregon history.   There are limbs and trees down all over the place all over town.  Neighbors to both the left and right lost trees and some houses on the block lost power.  .Got into the office today and had to park up a hill and hike down through melting ice, but still had power there too.

The Fred Meyer in the Hollywood district still doesn't have power so they started to throw out a lot of the meat and other frozen perishable items.   People started dumpster diving and Fred Meyer called the cops.  Guess it turned into a fracas but apparently the cops eventually withdrew and people continued to recover the discarded groceries..

Texas sounds screwed.   They say its the second coldest winter there in recorded history.

^^^^

That's funny.   Wrecked my Jeep on the ice the first winter I had it in Wyoming after moving up from Florida.

Wow, talk about strange.

Wow, talk about strange.

That mayor in Texas had quit.......

***

Boyd later wrote a follow-up post, claiming he’d resigned back on Feb. 12. He was still listed as mayor on the city website as of Tuesday night.

“I won’t deny for one minute what I said in my post this morning,” he opened. “I was speaking as a citizen as I am NOT THE MAYOR anymore. I apologize for the wording and ask that you please not harass myself or my family anymore!”

In the follow-up, Boyd also said his wife lost her job for defending his Darwinian initially post.

Tuesday afternoon, Colorado City shared an official Facebook post, warning residents to boil their water prior to using it. The post was met with a flurry of sarcastic comments.

“What sort of place has Texas become, I ask you, where government feels it has some sort of obligation to society and people at large!” one commenter wrote. “I say, drink and let the strong survive!”

Like I joked about way above on this thread, "they got a bunch of damned socialists living there now expecting help from the gub'mint. So much for independence."

You couldn't write this stuff if ya tried, but I did try. LOL  If Texas didn't have Austin, you could nuke the whole place and I wouldn't care.

I started a thread with this, but now see it belongs here:

And...we're back.

90 hours without power. Ice storm broke the wires. We have a well, so no water either. No internet. Bags of ice in the fridge, but what's left now will have to be thrown away. Hot shower soon! Wood stove kept us from freezing.

I know there are still lots of folks around the country who still don't have power - my heart goes out to them - hope they're back on the grid soon.

Now time to catch up on the zone. Is Joe still president?

Another you can't make this up.

Gov. Greg Abbott has blamed the outage on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Rick Perry isn't freezing his ass off tonight

Yep, no federal water or electric help for regular folk, that would be socialism and Texas wants none of that.

apparently Cancun is nice this time of year.

GOP - Grifting Old Powerbrokers

Don't mess with Texas! How's that independent power grid working for ya? Hope Cruz is enjoying Cancun

Cruz set the new standard in Texas when he did not defend his wife when Trump degraded her, you can mess with Texas, and they will kiss your ass

fuckin pussy, that is all I need to know about this weasel, like I would elect a guy that would not defend the honor of his wife, and expect him to watch out for me, yea right

So Ted Cruz isn't freezing either. I trust the good people of Cancun are providing Ted with everything he deserves

(((Cancun's revenge)))

The trend around here for those that can afford it is to get a generac generator that runs off your natural gas line.= $10k-$20k It is a sad state but we can no longer depend on the Govt. to supply the most basic things clean water, electricity, education, policing etc.

>>  generator that runs off your natural gas line.''

so...what happens when there is no natural gas?

https://www.texastribune.org/2021/02/16/natural-gas-power-storm/

Failures across Texas’ natural gas operations and supply chains due to extreme temperatures are the most significant cause of the power crisis that has left millions of Texans without heat and electricity during the winter storm sweeping the U.S.

From frozen natural gas wells to frozen wind turbines, all sources of power generation have faced difficulties during the winter storm. But Texans largely rely on natural gas for power and heat generation, especially during peak usage, experts said.

Officials for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages most of Texas’ grid, said the primary cause of the outages Tuesday appeared to be the state’s natural gas providers. Many are not designed to withstand such low temperatures on equipment or during production.

Oh I thought it was the windmills

Wow when I saw the post on twitter last night about Ted Cruz going to Cancun while his fellow Texans literally freeze to death I thought it was fake. I thought not even Ted Cruz can be that arrogant and stupid. But no he was, but of course it was all a big misunderstanding he is coming back today and was only escorting his family down to Mexico. The man is a piece of shit sitting in a pile of puke.

Apparently Cruz now coming back from Cancun.

Looking forward to Lying Ted's explanation.

>>>>  and was only escorting his family down to Mexico

k, that's totally normal.

Ted should have a wonderful stroll through Houston International today.

> not even Ted Cruz can be that arrogant and stupid

Never underestimate Ted Cruz' capacity for arrogance and stupidity.

Word is that Ted is retuning to Texas now..

unless he 'must' complete a 2 week quarantine in Cancun? :)

 >>>>>and was only escorting his family down to Mexico

Well, the language barrier, ya know.

Oh, wait. Never mind.

Could always run with 'I was in Mexico coordinating help for Texas with our Mexican neighbors'

Water utilities are shut down or under boil orders throughout the south. We are still providing water by a wing and a prayer. Water towers are empty but we are still able to provide directly to the distribution lines/pipes. It's difficult considering the amount of fires in abandoned buildings occupied by homeless folks.

Fingers crossed.

((((( a wing and a prayer )))))

To maybe do some sit-ups.

On Twitter –     Julie Roginsky      @julieroginsky

I get it now. Ted and Heidi Cruz wanted their children to be safe, to have basic sanitary services like heat and running water, to leave behind a third-world apocalyptic nightmare for a safer place. Like so many parents before them, they decided to cross the Mexican border.

^^^^^Lol.

Good one Slick.
