Wow, really scary conditions around the country, and they're going to be around for a few days. Good luck to y'all. Stay safe. Watch out for your neighbors, especially the elderly, if you can.
"Around 5,000 Oklahoma Gas & Electric customers were without power overnight, and Entergy Arkansas logged about 3,000 outages. Both states have much smaller populations compared to Texas.
Officials in Houston had warned people to prepare for outages and hazardous roads — conditions similar to what residents might see in the wake of a Category 5 hurricane.
“There (have) been numerous reports of accidents from icing recently,” National Weather Service lead forecaster Bob Oravec said Monday. “I think there’s going to be a big threat today as the system pushes northeastward.”
Accumulating ice between a tenth and a quarter of an inch (0.25 and 0.6 centimeters) was possible across eastern Louisiana, Mississippi, central Tennessee, Kentucky and over into the West Virginia and Ohio border region, Oravec said.
Up to 12 inches of snow was expected across parts of the southern Plains into Monday, said Marc Chenard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center."
We have been snowed in since Friday and a half inch of new ice is coating everything this morning. Surprised we still have power. They say the thaw is coming today.
Over the pandemic I have been reading up / looking into solar for a conversion van, but also as a secondary power source in the event of outages. This guy on YouTube seems to have quite a following. Here's his $702 "milk crate" DIY solar generator:
... not sure this would solve a heating issue by itself, but at least it'd be something to keep laptop/phone charged and maybe allow you to operate some other small appliances. You can probably scale up batter7 & inverter with twice capacity for an additional $300-$500
Very true while in the midst and depends on how long it lasts, but it's nice to have at least one cycle of the battery's capacity available. Once the storm moves on, the power might still be out for a while.
Just another sign of my dolthood I suppose, but I have a hard time imagining how Houston Texas, way down there, gets blasted with snow & ice?
I've lived much farther north in the Bay Area for 60 years and there's been one snow day, which absolutely blew everyone's mind, and it melted away by the afternoon.
I think the large majority of us are in agreement that G-reg sucks- with that said, we don't need to bring him up in threads that, thankfully, he is not a part of (yet).

OOOF. Remember when Texas Repubs were touting their energy independence and how rolling blackouts that happen in CA were the result of bad Dem policies?
Sunday night's ice storm caused the largest power outage in Oregon history. There are limbs and trees down all over the place all over town. Neighbors to both the left and right lost trees and some houses on the block lost power. .Got into the office today and had to park up a hill and hike down through melting ice, but still had power there too.
The Fred Meyer in the Hollywood district still doesn't have power so they started to throw out a lot of the meat and other frozen perishable items. People started dumpster diving and Fred Meyer called the cops. Guess it turned into a fracas but apparently the cops eventually withdrew and people continued to recover the discarded groceries..
Texas sounds screwed. They say its the second coldest winter there in recorded history.
Boyd later wrote a follow-up post, claiming he’d resigned back on Feb. 12. He was still listed as mayor on the city website as of Tuesday night.
“I won’t deny for one minute what I said in my post this morning,” he opened. “I was speaking as a citizen as I am NOT THE MAYOR anymore. I apologize for the wording and ask that you please not harass myself or my family anymore!”
In the follow-up, Boyd also said his wife lost her job for defending his Darwinian initially post.
Tuesday afternoon, Colorado City shared an official Facebook post, warning residents to boil their water prior to using it. The post was met with a flurry of sarcastic comments.

90 hours without power. Ice storm broke the wires. We have a well, so no water either. No internet. Bags of ice in the fridge, but what's left now will have to be thrown away. Hot shower soon! Wood stove kept us from freezing.
I know there are still lots of folks around the country who still don't have power - my heart goes out to them - hope they're back on the grid soon.
Now time to catch up on the zone. Is Joe still president?
Cruz set the new standard in Texas when he did not defend his wife when Trump degraded her, you can mess with Texas, and they will kiss your ass
fuckin pussy, that is all I need to know about this weasel, like I would elect a guy that would not defend the honor of his wife, and expect him to watch out for me, yea right
The trend around here for those that can afford it is to get a generac generator that runs off your natural gas line.= $10k-$20k It is a sad state but we can no longer depend on the Govt. to supply the most basic things clean water, electricity, education, policing etc.
Failures across Texas’ natural gas operations and supply chains due to extreme temperatures are the most significant cause of the power crisis that has left millions of Texans without heat and electricity during the winter storm sweeping the U.S.
From frozen natural gas wells to frozen wind turbines, all sources of power generation have faced difficulties during the winter storm. But Texans largely rely on natural gas for power and heat generation, especially during peak usage, experts said.
Officials for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages most of Texas’ grid, said the primary cause of the outages Tuesday appeared to be the state’s natural gas providers. Many are not designed to withstand such low temperatures on equipment or during production.
Wow when I saw the post on twitter last night about Ted Cruz going to Cancun while his fellow Texans literally freeze to death I thought it was fake. I thought not even Ted Cruz can be that arrogant and stupid. But no he was, but of course it was all a big misunderstanding he is coming back today and was only escorting his family down to Mexico. The man is a piece of shit sitting in a pile of puke.

Water towers are empty but we are still able to provide directly to the distribution lines/pipes. It's difficult considering the amount of fires in abandoned buildings occupied by homeless folks.
I get it now. Ted and Heidi Cruz wanted their children to be safe, to have basic sanitary services like heat and running water, to leave behind a third-world apocalyptic nightmare for a safer place. Like so many parents before them, they decided to cross the Mexican border.
