Tesla car?

Forums:

So does anyone have or know someone that has a Tesla electric car? Has anyone driven one?  This year they are coming out with a base Model 3 for 35k.  Thats a good price point to compete with other traditional cars.

I love the idea and there is lots of hype, i just don't know anyone that has experience with them.

There is a Tesla charging station in the lot of the nearby Barnes & Noble store, vastly underattended.  So the idea has not really caught on yet here in Jerseyland.

But the few I've seen there appear to be sharp cars.

I've heard the wait list for delivery is quite long.

I do not...but, i did hear today that the company is now worth more than any other U.S. automobile Co. (Could be weird stat, cause that may not take much...lol)

i know many people, they love them, and have stayed with them.

Up til now, they were kinda pricey but I guess no gas helps. I read they (Tesla) are building the largest  building in the world in terms of its footprint over the ground- the gigafactory, Its not even close to done but they chose Sparks, Nevada as a location. Tesla-Sparks (ha). I love the idea of a reliable electric car. i wonder about upkeep and charging.   Im ready to make a switch if the product is there.

This is a good resource if you are thinking about it. Looks like I could get $14k in tax credits and $600 worth of free charging.

because they are not considered just an automobile co

Based on my observation of the many Teslas parked nowhere near a charging station, I believe that they really don't need to be charged for relatively longer periods of time than your typical electric car, like the Leaf, many of which I have seen plugged in at parking lot charging stations.

I would LOVE to have an affordable Tesla... probably need to wear out the old Civic and/or Prius (both 11 years old) before that happens, though.

Lots of people in the know say that they are the best car made these days.

I suggest waiting -  they may discover some design flaws with the first release. A neighbor just drove home a new Tesla SUV - model X

Gorgeous design, however all the sweeping glass windshield and glass over head creates glare and heats up the interior of the car. Tesla provided a quick fix by tinting the overhead glass darker and providing a darkening shade (looks like those things parent put on the widows to protect babies from the direct sunlight. She's leasing the expensive Tesla and is already kicking herself for jumping on the first release.

I know OP was talking about the soon to be released lower priced Tesla, My friend who currently drives a electric Nissan Leaf put down a deposit on one over a year ago, there's gong to be a long wait list for them..so just wait :)

I have several friends who own Tesla's.

My next door neighbor is a Test Engineer for them in the South Bay.

My kid has a pal who is a mechanic at their SF shop on Van Ness.

My band mate is an HR Rep and hired a lot of the folks who work in their South Bay Factory.

I don't know about this tesla car stuff but the tesla band raged hard

A couple that are friends of mine have 2, and I've driven both of them.

She has the cheaper model, which when they got a couple of years ago, cost

about $50k I think. I was driving that downhill and the first thing you notice

is that it has a "governor" that automatically slows you down in order to charge the battery.

It feels weird but makes sense.

He has the Sport model (think that's what they call it), which was

about $100k. That thing kicks fucking ass. He was in the passenger seat when

we got to a stop sign. "Ok, floor it!"

Now I'm not a total dummy, so I just hit it about 3/4, since I didn't know the car.

The thing took off like a fucking rocket and he goes "I know you didn't floor it."

I say, "are you crazy? We might have ended up wrecked in that stand of trees!"

He says "You have a point there."

Anyway, very fun to drive and very fast. The only downside would be going on

a long drive where you may not be sure where the next charging station is.

Im sure these cars will only get better.

I have driven a few of them, they really are nice cars. Insane mode is super fast too, really throws your head back when you step on the pedal.

I was on the wait list for a few years for a Model X (the SUV, for my wife). When it finally came out and we started configuring one for order, it came to about $100K after we selected the options we wanted. I was expecting it to come in closer to $70K, my wife also was too self conscious about the gullwing doors and not as excited about the car as I was... we ended up getting her a Volvo XC90 which she likes and was more like $65K. I tried to roll my reservation over to the Tesla Model 3 wait list, but they wouldn't let me do it and they already had over 300K reservations, so I just got my deposit back. Thankfully, I did buy some stock in the process, so I am still rooting for Tesla as a company.

Light rail is more leftist

Next car I buy will be all electric. Looking at the all electric Chevy Bolt or All electric Kia Sol. A Tesla would be way cooler, but doesn't work as a dog car. too bad they  don't still make the all electric Rav 4. Guy in my neighborhood got one years ago and loves it. We need more all electric vehicle choices here, overseas there are many more options.

Tesla estimates that driving 15,000 miles per year will cost $602 in electricity.

Thanks all- Im gonna let them blow through the first couple years of the model 3. From the sound of it I might be waiting anyway! Model 6? Id have to wait for the lower price. Im really stoked that it is getting the electric car thing moving again. I want wind and solar option on mine (ha).  I was afraid of another "who killed the electric car" but Elon is probably too big for that, i hope.

Here is an app idea-  get a listing of home-based charging stations. If you are getting low on a trip, bust out the phone and go to the personal stations. small juice fee to home station owner. Or a co-op model. That way  you wont have to wait for the station infrastructure to take off and you could travel. I want 20%

The real question, of course, is....

If Tesla Is Worth More Than GM, Why Are Taxpayers Still Subsidizing It?

But it's worth noting that whatever Tesla's growth potential, at the moment the company is heavily reliant on taxpayer support.

For every Tesla car sold (up to No. 200,000), federal taxpayers kick in $7,500 to lower the costs. State taxpayers in a multitude of states pony up still more. In Colorado, they contribute another $5,000 to the electric car kitty, in California, it's $2,500.

When the Los Angeles Times crunched the numbers two years ago, it found that Tesla buyers had received more than $284 million in federal tax incentives and more than $38 million in California rebates. And that was before Tesla's banner 2016 year.

The taxpayer help only starts there. Tesla also collects hundreds of millions from competing automakers by selling environmental credits in California and more than half a dozen other states to car companies that can't meet the states' "zero emissions" sales mandates.

Plus, Nevada ponied up $1.3 billion in incentives to convince Tesla to build its huge battery factory near Reno.

And this doesn't include the fact that electric car owners don't pay into the Highway Trust Fund — which is funded by the per-gallon tax on gasoline and pays for road construction and upkeep.

Lots of people think that Musk's real genius is his ability to get government money for his endevours.

>here is an app idea-  get a listing of home-based charging stations.

VRBO already advertises properties for rent that also have electric car charging set ups. PItch the idea to them? Actually, my neighbor works for Air B&B, I will suggest it. SHe was telling me about a new program the company is offering - guided tours and hike by locals in different cities. hooks visitors  up with local people to show them the back roads, etc. Uber on foot.

A friend of mine has the sporty model. It is so crazy fast. I love riding in it. The self driving mode is pretty crazy, it works well I think on the freeways. There are a lot of Tesla's on the road in metro Atlanta.

The charging seems to be needed only at home in my friends case. He has the super charge station in his garage, I think it is just an hour or maybe 2 for a complete charge. He drives about 45 miles a day and charges a 1-2 times a week.

I am interested in the more affordable model when that is available. I agree with above statements of waiting until maybe the 2nd or 3rd year model for improvements. If I had 80 grand for car I would have a Tesla.

Do you think anybody from the band Tesla drives a Tesla? I would. lol.
