Tell Me All About Stump Grinders...

Forums:

Looking at the DR power equipment website,  they have a range of homeowner-style walk-behind machines.
Thinking about getting one (might come in handy here).

Anyone have experience with those particular machines ?

I bought a second-hand Brush Mower and it runs great.  Kawasaki motor about 17 HP.
Company recently acquired by Generac,  but despite some gripes about customer service,  they seem to have decent support.

DR Stump people,  tell me the news.

I thought you were the skilled, seasoned outdoors, woodsman.

Ask H.I.M how to spell Google.

Thank you poster,  for your insightful comment regarding Stump Grinders.  I will take your opinion into account in the distant future.

I thought Stump Grinders was a band from Jamestown Colorado.

you are thinking of the band from ward, co ....jamestown is around the hill :)

pour molasss on the stump regularly, mother nature will eat it.

No noise, either.

Time is free

"... pour molasss on the stump regularly, mother nature will eat it..."

Like that idea.  Sometimes I drill and add Shiitake spawn if conditions are right.
However this would be to take out small stumps on Woods trails,  maybe a few side jobs in Suburbia.

They Grind the stump , and make a huge mess of grindings. And they are Realy Fukin' Dangerous....Watch yer toes...

People in Ward aren't that messy, but they can be dangerous.... wink

I got nothing on stump grinding.

Wedges and diesel (soaked for a few days and covered) with a small hardwood fire on top always worked fine here

Used one for the first time this past summer. I rented this Toro model, https://www.toro.com/en/rental/tree-care/stx-26-stump-grinder  and ground about 45 stumps. This beast did a very good job. Don't think I'd want to use anything that doesn't have self-propulsion and a powered sweep cutting head.

Thanks Grateful Dave.  I see those Toro grinders with tracks and grinder head (also their later brother #38) and they run about 25 Grand second-hand.

The DR I'm considering is more like 2 Grand and not as powerful.  10 or 12  HP engine.

Maybe it can grind some stumps and not break ?

They have a 2-year warranty for parts / engine.

Or you can be like Jimmie Walker and use dy-no-mite like in the days of old.

I'm not opposed to the old-fashioned methods,  but as I approach my Golden Age,  I'm avoiding potential Death-Dealing Farm accidents before they happen.

This is why I don't debark from my tractor before the PTO quits spinning.

Many people have been killed by that.

when its wet outside, drill a bunch of long holes in the stump, pour kerosene on it and light it on fire. it will burn underground.

Got Stumps ?

I'd go chipper before stump grinder.

Rent the stump grinder, buy the chipper.

thats the way id go foghorn...if this is just a purchase for your home and property, how many trees are you really going to cut down over the rest of your life that needs the stump ground? i also live on a very very large rural property and honestly id struggle to think of more than 4 or 5 trees that both need to come down within the next decade and also need a stump ground.

but a woodchipper? that is way up high on our list of machinery to buy, we are probably getting one this year to help with composting woody plant trash, and im expecting to use it at least monthly.
