Tedeschi/Trucks Band

Forums:

This band just keeps getting better. Excellent show last night in West Palm Beach. Was waiting for this one for a while and it didn't disappoint. IMHO Derek is the man. For sure best slide guitar player out there and maybe flat best period. Can't even believe the sound he elicits from his axe.

But my post is really about Susan. I first saw her back in the late 90's solo and with the Other Ones. Always liked her voice and vocals and her ability as a song writer, but never considered her an amazing guitar player. Not anymore. I've seen Tedeschi/Trucks more than a few times beginning with their collaboration as Soul Stew Revival. From then to now her playing has gone off the charts. Maybe it's being married to Derek (no sexism intended) and his influence on her playing, but she can hold a candle to anyone. And I am a hard critic when it comes to guitarists. I was blown away with her ability and performance last night compared to the last time I saw them pre pandemic. And Derek lets her shine.

This band is incredibly tight. Excellent horn section and backup vocalists featuring Mike Mattison are terrific. Their original material is great and their covers, particularly last night's Beatles  "I've Got A Feeling" and Dylan's "Don't Think Twice" were superb. I highly recommend catching them if you get the chance.

completely agree.  Last night's show was a real treat despite the venue not allowing me to drink my beers inside the show.  this band is simply amazing and Susan is an angel on earth. Derek has to be one of the greatest players ever.  I don't know many of their songs but they played the ones I do and I loved every bit of it.  left me wanting more.  a lot more

I was talking with a friend about Susan Tedeschi the other day and he was going on about the first time he saw her in the late 1990s and was having a hard time matching what he was seeing on stage with the sound coming from the speakers.

In the late 90's (1997?) both Susan and Derek came in to my electronics repair shop for emergency service on guitar amps during their respective tours. They met each other subsequently. Great players, and Susan brings it on vocals!

^^ I bought a used Susan solo CD many years later. I opened it to read the liner notes and the inside pic revealed the same orange feather boa she was wearing when I met her in the repair shop.

Bobstar. A treat indeed. An Angel indeed. The whole band exudes class. In hindsight I probably should have posted earlier to see if any other zoners were attending. Would have been nice to meet some in person.

I'm fortunate to be Seeing Bruce Hornsby on Saturday night in Stuart at the Lyric Theater. Sweet venue. 500 capacity. Saw Jim Messina there a couple weeks ago. Have loved Spider Fingers before he even did his stint with The Grateful Dead. Really pumped for it. This has been great way to bust out of the pandemic induced lack of live shows. Too bad Dead & Co canceled or it would have been a great month of shows. Sure hope some of these A listers keep making their way to Florida and these cool venues.

Over em

My CD player in my car busted so I'm listening to cassettes. 2 days ago, I dug in my basement and found a 3-18-98 Gov't Mule show Klondike taped, with some Derek Trucks Band on the backside.  Gonna be interesting to hear tunes from 20+ years ago. "Midnight In Harlem". LOVE that tune - Susan's singing and Derek's l licks -  so soulful.

I hope you get a spider fingers opener.

Must've been a jazzy phase of the Trucks band from what I've heard so far. Pre-Susan.

They were better apart than together

at least musically

Jamspace - yeah, I was really upset Dead & Co canceled (and I heard rumors it was because they couldn't enforce the types of covid restrictions they wanted but thd other night we all had to show proof of vax or a negative test so who knows).  we don't get that many shows down here out of season.  I used to live in NY and was kinda spoiled on that front.  seeing DSO in a few weeks.

TTB is phenomenal rock n roll R n B combo.

DTB was uncontrolled sonic mayhem, much more to my liking.

This tape is after the release of Derek's first album, which was October, 1997.
