summer1976

When did Jerry go back to the Irwin? Anybody know what show?

just curious. Always loved the TB tones

He started playing the TB-1000 in the fall of 1975, that's what he was playing on this tour.  He switched to the TB-500 (more Strat like version) in the fall of '76.

Right. I’m asking what was the last show Garcia played the TB 500 and made the switch? After he got the wolf back from Irwin, (I think sept/oct 77) how long was the tb500 still in rotation? Or did it fall out of favor immediately? New Years run and JGB photos from dec show him playing wolf, and I don’t know of a Travis bean guitar being part of 1978’s sounds at all.

Yes, of course these things matter. :)

lol asking for a friend

6-30, 7-1 were originally scheduled at the Syrian Mosque in Pittsburgh but were cancelled and a fourth night was added to Chicago.

yawn -

they didn't get their mojo back until fall tour that year.

and too much .. DONNA

I am with you amazingly tasty ice cream sammich

76, esp July is a snoozefest.  June has some energy from being back on stage together and cool bust outs but man the summer drags after the east coast run in June

and I know I know.. the Orephum has that segueasm show... meh

Throughout the tour they keep reaching back into darkstar territory often teasing as well as blues for allah. The nice long st stephens . The long slipknots remind me of 75 more than later. They didn't even tease other one until the last chicago show then aagain in san fran where it had to return.  It was just too tasty of a lick.

For me the tours best shows are in nyc at the beacon with 6-15  probably the best show of the tour.  Way ahead of its time sounding throughout.

But things get looser in Passaic but an 18 min Playin that Includes a tiger solo from jer.and by the time they hit Philly they were taking chances again. A 14 min slipknot on 6-21.they start stretching out the ending of Music Never Stopped adding the spacey section during the end jam.

6-22 playin Is 22 min before wheel. crazy fingers includes both B4A andFOTM teases..its like 13 mins.

The 23rd they do la cosmic charley> st stephen and threw in an old yellow dog story to boot.

6-24 might be better than 6-15 if it were longer. But the HSF is awesome but like a 3min DS tease after WRat.

By the time they get to Chicago the band is running on full cylinders

6-26 playin is over 18 min before st stephen which is almost 10 min long..uncut. before going into wheel.the mid set 2 crazy fingers includes a Spanish jam/B4A theme..

6-27 the let It grow set 2opener Is13 min That segues Into wharf rat but not before the band once again teases B4A.HSF has a 10 min skipknot and a 15 min franklins.

6-28 you get an 18 min eyes with a phil solo going into another FOTM tease jam to open the second set. They hadn't opened set 2 with eyes since dec73.

Not until the 29th do they even attempt an other one jamafter the wheel before the playin reprise.

Through out they keep reaching back and dusting off the oldies..

Interesting though is the crowd constantly calling out for darkstar between songs like it was still 74. But once they introduced the new terrapin station stuff and crazy fingers gets shelved the darkstar/b4a teases were harder to come bye.

So thats why I love this era.  they just seem so happy to be back  and eager to at least try to replicate 73-74 era only with 2drummers.

By 77 the set lists get shorter too plus the drum solo becomes a regular thing

damn greg, what strain are you smoking?  I need some stat.  I understand and totally appreciate your passion but I am not hearing the blues for allah teases you are claiming as well as the dark star.  I guess this is as good as any reason to re-listen to these shows again with an ear on what you are hearing

that said, I would love to get a couple of zips of whatever it is you had when dissecting the Summer of 76.  it def seems to be working for ya

More like territory .

6-17 has darkstar territory before the comes a time tease that occurs after let it grow but before wrat for e.g.

But the blues for allah thing, I believe,  morphs into the Spanish jam theme which is brought back in san fran...

Kind of a band compromise.

After all they brought back st stephen, dancin, and cosmic charley. they probably weren't confident enough to attempt darkstar or blues for allah for that matter.

They maybe didn't think they would do darkstar justice

Like they were getting comfortable playing with eachother before going into the deep end.

But B4Aalbum came out during retirement so fans were probably pumped at the possibility of hearing it live...although I didn't hear anyone calling out for it like they did darkstar...it was still all possible

6-9 has b4a thing before High Time which was another huge bust out

6-10 PITBjam includes b4a quote/jam before Dancin

6-11 has the b4afeel going on before stella blue which has a similar intro (anyone remember phil doing this in 01 with the q?)

But once they tasted that other one riff there was no stopping that song from returning and really staying in rotation pretty much till the end

Still weird it doesn't get teased at all until the last show in Chicago

"6-26 playin is over 18 min before st stephen which is almost 10 min long..uncut. before going into wheel."

The 6/26 Stephen is just about my favorite of all time, great dynamics in the jam.  And Bobby's vocal flub at the beginning of Playin' is a riot.

"By 77 the set lists get shorter too plus the drum solo becomes a regular thing"

Regular but short and not like it was after spring '78, that's the tour that solidified the set structure for the next 17 years.

"They maybe didn't think they would do darkstar justice"

I think that they were just tired of playing it, they had pretty much done everything they could with it by early '74 and it was obvious by then that they weren't interested in playing it much anymore.

True.  Thanks for the input thom

Also 6-14 has the20 min set 1 ending playin (old school), a crazy fingers containing b4a/spanish jam theme before dancin...and  a 14min slipknot

6-15 has an 11 min st stephen set 2 opener segues into NFA (oldschool) which is 12 min, and hello, more of the blues for allah thing they had been teasing since boston

and darkstar theme during the Dancin before the wharfrat.

The split sugar mag too

^6-15 dancin before the wheel not w.rat

...and 6-18 crazy fingers jam with the similar b4a desert theme

"6-22 playin Is 22 min before wheel. crazy fingers includes both B4A andFOTM teases..its like 13 mins."

I had tickets for the first three nights at the Tower (and WMMR broadcast the fourth night).  The first and third nights were upper balcony (leftovers sold right before the shows at the Tower), but the 22nd was the pair I got from the mail order so that was my only night of good seats.  My brother asked if he could sit in them for a song or two so I said "Sure, you can use them for the first song of the second set"  not anticipating a 30 minute medley to open up the set.  I finally went down and dragged him out during the Wheel.

That first set Crazy Fingers went into Comes a Time, quite the first set combo.
