If you want to support the Joe Strummer Foundation and the good works they do, my pal, Jessie Malin, is throwing a birthday bash for Joe at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park on Aug 19th. There will be all sorts of interesting things an people there including an auction of items that you don't want to miss. A few guests are already announced and more to come. This is one you don't want to miss, especially if you are a fan on The Clash and Joe's other projects. Tickets are on sale tomorrow, 7/22 at noon.

I forgot to mention the other charity that this show benefits, Music & Memory. Music & Memory is a nonprofit org that brings personalized music back into the lives of the elderly through digital music. www.musicandmemory.org

Do you wear a red beret and patrol the subways, Tony?

^

Yep. The Asbury Park subway system needs patrolling and I'm there to help. For the record, it's a red scally cap, not a beret, that I wear.

>>>Do you wear a red beret and patrol the subways, Tony?

can you explain this reference, thank you

can you explain this reference, thank you

I often have difficulty deciphering comments made by others. It is hard to understand a comment without context. I would venture the red beret and patrolling the subways refers to The Guardian Angles, a group founded in 1979 to combat crime in NYC. Their trademark was the wearing of red berets and they did patrol the subways. Why it was posted to me in a thread about a NYC benefit show to help out The Joe Strummer Foundation and Music and Memory, I couldn't even guess to the reason.

yikes, javaless dave has had a pretty poor posting acumen the last day or so.

The Clash have been one of my favorite bands since I was 15, before I got into the Grateful Dead.

Any fan of theirs would instantly get the reference to the Red Angels:

"Red Angel Dragnet"

I come from a long way away
And I know a fine thing when I see it.
See it
For the same reason no one ever
Pointed a telescope at the sun
Talking about the Red Angels of New York City

[Chorus]
Who shot the shot?
Who got shot tonite?

Not even five enforcement agencies can save their own.
Never mind the people
Tonite it's raining on the Angels of the City
Did anyone prophesize these people?

Only Travis
Come in Travis
One of these days I'm gonna get myself organized.

All the animals come out at night.
Queens, fairies, dopers, junkies, sick venal.
Some day a real rain will come and wash all the scum off the streets.

Thank god for the rain to wash the trash off the sidewalk. Listen you screwheads:
Here is a man who would not take it anymore.
A man who stood up against the scum, the filth.
Now I see clearly.

Personally I know the alley
Where Jack feeds on the birds of night
Not even bubbies on bicycles 2x2
Can stop the blood and feathers flying

Waring overalls and for once and for all
What is the dream?
I'll tell it
To live like they do in the movies
San Juan you listening?

Yeah I bet you are
Hands up for Hollywood
Hooray
I hear you
Snappy on the air
Hang in their
Wall to wall
You saved the worled
What else? You saved the girl
Chmpagne on ice
No stranger to Alcatraz
To boot
Or strip it down
Chop it a little
Being reasonable
Just freedom to move
To live
For women to take a walk in the park at midnite
Hey, but this is serious
She can't even get back home

I come from a long way off
And I know a lifegiver over a lifetaker
For the same reason no-one ever pointed
A gun at a policeman
Talking about the Red Angels of New York City

Yeah

weird

Actually one of the least weird things I've read on Viva recently. The only band that matters.

That slogan means nothing.

As do white letters on a black screen.

Of course they would but I'm still confused by the connection.

Is this right?

How did your career go after your accident, Java Dave?

I was just poking fun at Tony.  Since he was playing the Clash-fanboy and lives in the NYC area, I was suggesting he might have signed up for a Red Angels shift or two.  Capisce?

I capisce.

i capisce that you didn't pick up the Montgomery Clift reference, as any fan of The Clash instantly would.

"The Right Profile"

Lyrics

Say, where did I see this guy?
In 'Red River'?
Or a 'Place In The Sun'?
Maybe 'The Misfits'?
Or 'From Here to Eternity'?

And everybody say, "Is he all right?"
And everybody say, "What's he like?"
And everybody say, "He sure look funny"
That's Montgomery Clift, honey!

New York, New York, 42nd Street
Hustlers rustle and pimps pimp the beat
Monty Clift is recognized at dawn
He ain't got no shoes and his clothes are torn

And everybody say, "Is he all right?"
And everybody say, "What's he like?"
And everybody say, "He sure look funny"
That's that Montgomery Clift, honey!

I see a car smashed at night
Cut the applause and dim the light
Monty's face is broken on a wheel
Is he alive? Can he still feel?

And everybody say, "Is he all right?"
And everybody say, "Shine a light"
And everybody say, "It's not funny"
That's Montgomery Clift, honey!

Shoot his right profile

And everybody say, "Is he all right?"
And everybody say, "What's he like?"
And everybody say, "He sure look funny"
That's Montgomery Clift, honey!

Nembutol, numbs it all
But I prefer alcohol

And everybody say, "What's he like?"
And everybody say, "Is he all right?"
And everybody say, "He sure look funny"
That's Montgomery Clift, honey!

He said go out and get me my old movie stills
Go out and get me another roll of pills
There I go again shaking, but I ain't got the chills

ARRRGHHHGORRA BUH BHUH DO ARRRRGGGGHHHHNNNN!!!!

And everybody say, "What's he like?"
And everybody say, "Is he all right?"
And everybody say, "He sure look funny"
That's Montgomery Clift, honey!

The actual NYC subway clique called 'Guardian Angels' had a charismatic leader whose last name was Sliwa.

He had a radio show for a while.

Bump for the fans

Show is today. Not sure if I will be able to make it. Fighting a nasty chest cold and it's going to be a last second call for me. Bumming me out because this will probably be one of the shows of the year.

p.s. It might be wise to go to Asbury Park early and stop by the Transparent Clinch exhibit at the Asbury Hotel (walking distance from The Stone Pony). Danny has a stage set up with PA and mixing console there...hint, hint.

Thanks for the AP heads-up.  I've visited a lot this Summer and seen some Fine Music at the 'Jams In The Sand' series at Convention Hall.  Hüsky is frightened of the Ocean swimming,  but enjoys strolling around town and running in the Sand.

Missed the Reggae band the other Thursday, but hope to check the last couple-few shows of the series.  One is a Talking Heads tribute band,  which can't be that bad.

Good luck getting over that Cold.
