i would like to ask him why during most recent shows, he plays in a very laid back style and never digs to deep...and then like once or twice a show he just absolutely tears reality apart. what is the draw of the slower, sparse playing? i dont get it. but i dont really know how to word it properly in a way that gets my point across and does not sound insulting.

Steve Kimock Band was amazing in the 2002-03 timeframe. Deep improv and a tight following. Lots of amazing recordings thanks to Charlie Miller (and Arlene).

Go in there and ask what’s up with the money.” Kimock followed up on that advice and it apparently did not go well. Jill started screaming "You want money?" and thew some crumpled up dollar bills in his face (Phil was apparently watching TV in the next room and shut the door). Kimock then got his guitar and split.

And I really like his subtle playing style. But I do sometimes wish he'd step on the gas one or two more times a night.
Also, sure you can discern influences in his playing, but I think Kimock has quite a unique fingerprint as a player, so I don't get the Jerry copycat accusations.
As for the Selvin book, where does this guy suppose to have gained all this insight into the Phil/Kimock subject?
WKMS aired a 4th of July GD special last year, music woven in and out with Selvin's narration or maybe excerpts from an interview.
It was like this guy is some trusted authority on the subject of the Dead.
