status of Terrapin Crossroads

Forums:

Does anyone know what's ahead for TXR? November 1st is here, and there's nothing listed on the calendar. There were those scary articles about lease negotiations and a possible closure. And, of course, rumors here and there.

JamBase picked up on an article in the summer from the Marin Independent Journal:

https://www.jambase.com/article/terrapin-crossroads-beach-park-lease-phi...

https://www.marinij.com/2021/08/18/terrapin-park-music-venue/

Thanks. And, sure hoping for good news...

There was one more piece in the Marin Independent Journal in late October:

https://www.marinij.com/2021/10/21/fans-of-terrapin-crossroads-are-hopin...

I'm sure there's a ton of behind-the-scenes action and negotiations/decisions that we don't see.

Not seeing any positive news.  Restaurant has been closed for many months, Beach Park don't make sense if they're not running a restaurant and bar the rest of the time.  And, Phil got into this thing because he wanted to stop constant touring, but he's found a good way to make a buck traveling a few times a year.  Hard to think how/why they'd keep this thing going...

Fun while it lasted, though, it was a great place to see a show, inside or outside, and the food was nothing to complain about either...

But, couldn't the restaurant/bar re-open as the Covid situation lessens? It's Covid that has has kept the indoors part closed all this time, right?

I think Phil would lose out on a ton without TXR (or something similar) in his life. He has clearly thrived on having this kind of musical playground where his more local friends can regularly play; he can have all these events and creative shows; and musicians on the road can play shows there. It's also a place for him and Grahame to play.

Phil's life and music would change drastically, it seems, without TXR playing such a central role. Maybe that's already happened b/c of the Covid situation? But, it seems like things are getting back closer to normal--he just pulled off 9 nights at The Cap!

David Nelson announced their concert was celebrating the 'grand finale' of Terrapin Crossroads the other night.

He and Phil go back 6 decades or so FWIW. It didn't seem like conjecture.

Nothing lasts.

Seeing as how there are NO shows on the TXR calendar, it looks like they’re done. Maybe if there is a week or so left, Phil goes home today and announces a very last minute finale. If we don’t hear about that any day now, then it’s done.

A lot of things are changing and going away. Covid is a new fluctuating reality long term along with a host of other issues related to the economy, the climate, the music industry, politics, and more.

2022 is not going to look like 2021.

Jill got bored of entertaining friends at her restaurant. It's time to try something new. Maybe a candle shop in downtown Mill Valley.

The restaurant business is a TOUGH business, even before there was Covid. I know I wouldn’t have any investments in a restaurant these days, unless it’s a corporate chain like Chipotle etc.

please god let this mean i get to see even one more real PLF show at a real venue without getting on a plane

Time waits for no one

Latest word is that it's going to become a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., and Phil is under contract to play every Sunday brunch.

Passed by there in July 2020 at Covid's peak on a 3 week West coast swing. First time back west in over 30 years except layovers. Too bad it was closed. I guess I'll never see a show there. But I'm ok with that. It's all relative.

> Phil is under contract to play every Sunday brunch<

Saw Jamie Masefield, Stacey Starkweather, and a fiddle player at Sunday brunch at a thai restaurant in Burlington vt. I was told it was regular gig.

Count your blessing "thank you"

Mr light of day: With the Warfield work?

The Warfield is an AEG venue. IMO if Phil were to play a theatre it would be an APE venue like the Fox.

I don't know what's coming next...

But at least I'm enjoying the ride!

Maybe you should consider the circus?

Oh well

I love the warfield

the fox. Ehhh

the sax player on stilts was a good touch sunday

God Bless The Future

Plenty of Bay Area music venues, and room for new ones

The Guild Theater is opening in a couple of months on the Peninsula- capacity 500.

Expecting that Phil will stop by to play.

I wouldn't mind catching Phil & Friends at the Frost.

What happened to the day's when Phil was playing the Frost and all the big sheds like 20 years ago?

Now he can barely sell out the Cap. Even with the Q.

Prices??

Most of the fans are Seniors, could just be that not everyone is ready for indoor shows.

There is just too much competition you have Dead and Co, JRAD, DSO, and JGB that can all fill the Warfield/Fox/Chase depending on the band and the night.

5A7C8290-2297-44CF-86C8-422FAC5686A6.jpeg
I was in the neighborhood this afternoon and stopped by.

It already feels somewhat abandoned.

>>>Most of the fans are Seniors, could just be that not everyone is ready for indoor shows. <<<

Most people I know are not ready for indoor shows. I feel lucky that we have some really nice outdoor venues.

Phil looked great all through the Cap run. I can't wait to see more of the old codger and hear that live bass.

lltd - warfield would be ideal, but tbh, any venue around that size with a roster of musicians at the same caliber we got in the plf days would be enough for me.

been a crazy experiment.

pretty amazing actually.

what are the regular rotating cast members going to do?

That Jambase story isn't real journalism... just speculations woven together from previously published stories and social media comments to create filler content.

I'm still holding hope in my heart for TXR or a post-TXR era in a new location.

Brooklyn Bowl-TXR?

^hope NOT

...

I think at this point it seems that things are pretty fleshed out and everyone knows what's happening.

If it's true that they still hold the lease on the property through this month, I will be very surprised if they don't find a way to hold some type of farewell event/s.

Jill Lesh is an impresario at heart, and IMO it's just not her style to let something she put so much effort into and has had so much success with go out with a whimper. And that's not a dig at Stu Allen, but Phil & Jill built that place, and I would think they'd want to close it as well.

There are a variety of reasons why that might not be able to happen, but it would be the fitting end to such a great time & place.

Going forward, if anyone asked me (and no one will) I'd love to see Phil fire up a relationship with the Throckmorton Theater in Mill Valley and play regular shows there.

THAT place is awesome, it isn't used much and would be perfect for easy one-offs where Phil could just pop over from his home and play music without much hassle, which is why they started TxR in the first place.

But maybe we'll see more of what Phil has done lately, hitting the road again with short little mini-tours in smaller venues, nothing massive, nothing too complicated, nothing too long and tiring.

Maybe we'll see a little of both.

Whatever happens, while we have likely seen or soon will see the last of Terrapin Crossroads, it's pretty clear that Phil isn't finished playing music, and whether he chooses to play smaller venues with a group of lesser known players who know Phil, the music and each other (which makes such a difference IMO) or he plays with bigger names that look good on a marquee and can sell more tickets (not always the best for the music IMO) I really don't think we've seen the last of Phil Lesh.

And that's really what matters most.

I think we will see Phil on the road. He rented/bought a tour bus a few months ago that was parked at TXR for a bit.

I totally agree about the Throckmorton Theatre, the Further warm up shows there were a lof of fun and I always enjoy events there. The Sweetwater folks might not be too thrilled....

In my mind, 2 possibilities

1. P&J are planning a huge goodby concert or a short run, but are not yet announcing as there is a chance that this will yet be resolved.

2. They are done with it and it's over.

In any case, this place will never be duplicated. The magic was real. I am glad that this happened in my lifetime.  Thank you Phil and Jill.

>>>The Sweetwater folks might not be too thrilled<<<

Meh. The Sweetwater is up and rolling again, I don't think a handful of Phil shows happening down the street would bother them much. They could even set up after-show events to snag the crowd leaving the Phil show.

And if Phil does hit the road again, even on a small scale, that would be great for Viva La Zone, as it would give more people a chance to bitch about who's playing with Phil and to argue about the quality of the shows, which have always been a central theme to the black screen.

The Zone lives on!!!!!

In any case, this place will never be duplicated. The magic was real. I am glad that this happened in my lifetime.  Thank you Phil and Jill.

That is so true, nobody could duplicate the TXR vibe!!! I am grateful for every night I was there from the soft opening at the beginning to the last night in the bar before it closed for COVID. Who knew that the Phil show on July 4th would be the last Phil show at TXR? It would be nice if Phil could do one last show outdoors but I don't think that will happen.

it would give more people a chance to bitch about who's playing with Phil and to argue about the quality of the shows, which have always been a central theme to the black screen.

Is TXR the result of the funds raised from that 3-15-90 Landover Md show they released ? And if so how'd Phil end up with it and not the whole band ? Or is TXR a whole different thing altogether ? And what tf did the Dead do with all the money raised from that Md release ? Those mutherfuckers taking my money under false pretenses.

A music venue/museum-ish type of place called 'Terrapin Station' which was to be in/near Marin Co was a serious idea/notion that was being kicked around by the band during that time (1989-1990) as touring was already showing it's wear but I suspect it sort of died with Brent and Jerry's increasingly problematic "issues". Hats off to Phil for bringing something along that line to actual reality!

Phil should join up with the McMenamin brothers....   (who'd love to see 3 nights of Phil at the Edgefield???  Could the bay area us an Edgefield???)

>>>>Phil should join up with the McMenamin brothers....

He already did when he played the Crystal Ballroom a couple of times.

But yes, Phil at the Edgefield would be great and it would bring all the freeks down from the hills.

TERRAPIN NATION LIVES

No, no news nor speculation however

we will always be connected

I'm glad to have met so many awesome people

having such an awesome time

And that cannot be taken away

txr was very similar to a museum...full of antiques!

AY-OH!

Ken, I meant as far as running / managing a club / cafe went...   why invent the wheel when I'm sure they'd gladly get something local going for him.

No, TXR is a different thing altogether. I think TXR was the result of the money Phil earned with Furthur.

This release came out in September 1997. I bought it, and was stoked about the possibilities. It ended up dying and who knows what happened to the cash-probably used to pay off debts & employees as they started getting used to the financial realities that retirement brought.

My friend and I were just talking about this a few days ago.  Seems about right, where is my hologram Jerry?!?!?!   ;)

OMG I never realized this-you are correct! I'm originally from Dayton and have been this museum a few times. It is the same one!

Even knowing that it was coming, reading this sweet and gentle letter was an emotional experience. Damn.
I loved the time I spent with all of you, and the music. It was good when Greg was alive and especially good when I spent so much time caring for my mom in San Rafael having TXR as a place that added love and joy that helped sustain me. Love to all, and thanks to Phil and Jill.

Wow. I'm sitting a mile away from the place reading this.

Its pretty sad Phil won't play one final show there, but hey, it it what it is, he's 80, its business, I get it.

Still is a bummer though.

Thanks Phil and Jill, it was a fun run.

Long Live Terrapin Nation!!!!!!

Thanks Phil and Jill.

crying

A decade is a solid chuck of time to keep something going.

Though I never got to visit I certainly lived vicariously though part of the Terrapin community.

Thanks for sharing with me the experience. It’s sad to see Terrapin go but I am hopeful

the community will carry on. It’s not even close but seeing Phil at the Capitol for almost the

whole run Philed me up.  It’s his home away from home.

Thanks Phil!

great run sir

LOVE !

It's hard to sum up all my experiences and how I feel about that place. Some I just can't put into words (shocking, I know) some I can't put onto the black screen (ask me in 3D).

Suffice to say it became so much more for me personally than I ever would have thought. Beyond the fun, the great variety of great music and the great variety of great experiences, in a particular way that place gave me my groove back, something I thought maybe I'd lost, and for that I'm eternally grateful.

A lot of people put a lot of effort, energy & style into making it something more than just another venue, or at least something much different than other venues, and I was lucky enough to get to know many of them and see the place go through it's changes and creative growth because of them.

My hat's off to all of those folks, but especially to our boy Pete.

I know a little about doing jobs like that, and IMEO he did it just exactly the way it's supposed to be done.

Atta' boy Pete!

And it doesn't sound like Phil is finished with playing small shows in cool little venues, and that's a good thing.

Atta' boy Phil!

On it goes.

Probably a lot of opportunities coming up with things reopening . more. A seasonal collaboration would be cool.

Pete?

This image is from a Zoner pre-show gathering at TXR in April 2019. Anyone remember which show, LOL?
Judit was there, too, but wasn't in this shot, unfortunately.

I roadtripped down from Oregon w/ Surfdead, stayed on that awful AirBnb boat in the San Rafael marina and Surfdead had to rescue me the next day -- thanks again Surfdead!

If anyone isn't cool w/ this image being posted, let me know and I'll edit you out of the image. ;)

Turtle, Mark, Gary?

That HAD to be a David Nelson Band show.

Yeah this was from the show when Chris Robinson sat in I think. I don't remember why but couldn't make the meet up

One of many...

Great shot, even had some easties

My Favorite 30 minute door to door (with bridge crossing) clubhouse...

and some good news from another favorite clubhouse (east-bay edition): Ashkenaz...

...and too bad about no farewell show, given that this weekend is the best weekend of the year to go out: extra hour this weekend with clocks turning back!

Great pic!  Brings back two dear memories for me.

I think it was 2013 DNB fall tour at TXR where Garyfish gave me the devils pen (oil) for the first time! lolol

The other great memory involves meeting Turtle for first and (only?) time at DelFest, pretty sure it was the tornado year, pretty sure the NJ crew was in attendance.    Good times!  Been thinking fond and loving thoughts about Lites lately.

Cheers!

That photo looks like a Santa Claus convention!

I've been accused of being him many a time.

In Guatemala 20 years ago a little girl got all excited when she saw me and said Santa Claus over and over. Her mother was amused. I was offended. I was only in my 30's at the time.

I like Ashkenaz. Especially the soup.

Great pic.

Lotsa great memories.

Great pic LLollo. I remember. That was one of several mass meals in that place. Good(not great) food and awesome company.

Damn I'm going to miss that place.

I was running an electrical job at a grammar school, and we had to wait outside for the kids to go home before we could go in and work. Was waiting outside the fence when a very young boy came up to me and asked if I was Santa Claus. I was around 40.

That was a really sweet gathering (I'm invisible, but I'm pretty sure the light blue corduroy shirt Johnny D is sitting with is mine). It is such a shiny smiley group of lovelies. Awww.

Lovely photo with great people and I recall some deep emotions, especially for Benice and Judit, who were going through tough times.

Judit: This may have been the same date that I drove you back to your sister's and our car went airborne on the  Freeway.  Glad that we were both OK, though the car has has seen better days.

Clink clink clink...

A toast...

TO THE CLUBHOUSE!!!!!

txr1_1.jpg

I can't figure out, is this the end or beginning?

As always, and with all things, it's both.

^^^. Yes Yes Y'all

Oh, John, I hadn't thought about that fateful ride home in quite a while. Wow, that was some strange kind of unexpected adventure. I imagine the car didn't do as well as we did.

I keep thinking about Pete and his solid presence. I have a lot of love for him.

guess I need to go dig up the crystal I buried in the bushes there back at the beginning

Kind words as usual Lance, thanks.

Thank you Judit, I love you too.

Although I knew it was coming it was hard to read the letter sent to me. See you all soon!

Right on Pete!

Kids!?

it's all a dream we dreamed one afternoon, long ago...

had some epic times for sure.

thanks for the group pic, its a good one.

love all you kids.

Hey Pete.  You've been a grateful friend for 10 years... I remember 1st time we met, Anders Osborne:  My name wasn't on the list...Waited outside 45 mins and what do you know, you rebooted system and like magic my name appeared.  That was 1st month.  Ever since, you always knew me.   Best of everything.  Come to Tahoe, Incline Village anytime (I'll get you almost free rental off-season), 800-832-1454 or email me.  Take care of yourself, Andy

Tears of Love...Like a love one who dies, you knew it was coming but you cry anyway!!! Thanks for the memories, at least we have that to carry forward.  And to John, Terry, Kathleen et al, thanks for all you did to make Terrapin Crossroads so SPECIAL.  And the many fans:  Woz, Judith, Brian (big thanks to you again my friend), Doug, Chris (big thanks to you again my friend), Turtle, Scott and the many more I met there.  May the four winds blow you safely home.  Another time.  Another place.  And to Phil and Jill:  Thank you so much for 10 grateful years.  Carry on!!!

Pete is Da Man! Thanks for all your smiles at the gate.

Andy - I have tickets to LOS @ Tahoe for NYE -- would like to speak with you before I book lodging... no rush, but please send your contact info to the email in my profile.  I may sell the tickets in the end, but I haven't seen them for 3 years, so want to make the effort.

I'm also applying for jobs w/ Vail Resort Co, they seem to have multiple West coast openings for communications jobs... so trying to research their reputation.

Anyone -- I'm heading up to Occidental now -- if there's any sort of gathering or music nearby, please reach out!

Here's a facebook link of Phil's last performance at TXR, courtesy of HappyCat - Deadheadland (feel free to donate):

https://www.facebook.com/Deadheadland/videos/1516551765376282

With that performance I understand why they closed!

My Occidental friends wanted me to post their fav image w/ Phil, after they ran Bay to Breakers one year... she said Phil was staring at her the entire show and couldn't figure out why, LOL

we are out wine tasting now at Russian River!56364FD3-5855-4CBD-AEA5-58F37F187684_0.jpeg

Lol.

Just got back from Costco, Richmond and admired a beautiful sunset behind Mt. Tam.

Remembering how life's troubles faded away during my 20 minute drives from Berkeley to Terrapin...

So long TXR.  It was the highlight of many trips out west. It was a beautiful thing. It was the catalyst for meeting many Zoners. What a long strange trip it is. Onwards!

Thanks Phil!

100 reasons why I'm sad TXR is gone.

A celebration of a beginning or an end?

Beginning of the beginning of the end of the beginning.

About what krab said, I have put some of Greg's ashes in water, thinking that all wild waters connect. Among them, the McKenzie river, the ocean at Rodeo Beach in Marin, and the Canal at TXR. Momo (Moses) - Todd-  helped at TXR by going down to the water on the rocks from street level and letting the ashes find their way to the water. It was a moving experience for both of us, as was TXR in so many ways.

Hello Judit. I remember my first meeting with you & Greg @ TXR. After Greg's passing you told me that you read one of my babblings to Greg  (I believe it was about Double Yolked Eggs) & that it gave him pleasure. The thought of the pleasure  I have had with Double Yolks coupled with Greg enjoying my adventures causes me great joy.

Much thanks for your friendship & as both you & Greg travel trough eternity I hope you remember me. I will remember you both.

Jim, it is my pleasure to think of you whenever I get a double yolked egg. I imagine there are more than a few of us who have that same feeling when we get one. You are in my heart. I wish you well always.

I too first met Judit with her Greg at Terrapin Crossroads.

They passed by me in the parking lot and I just knew. Even though I didn't really know what either looked like, I just knew.

At a point soon I'm going to start a thread chronicling "our best times at TxR", of which I have many, and I'm pretty sure, especially if folks think about it a bit, many others will have quite a few good tales to tell as well.

But it sounds like Judit has a good lead right away.

And far out to her story.

Because it's a damn good one, and that type of thing is what I'll be talking about.

Sometimes, if we're really lucky, places become more than just places.

The memories are surfacing; remembering when the Dedicated Maniacs played in the Bar in August of 2012. That was the first time I met a bunch of Zoners, including most of the band members. I think Canyon and Lisa were there, Lance, you were there, and so many others. Fun dancing and a good time.

Here's this East Coast Zoners 2 cents on TXR:

Some Rise, Some Fall, Some Climb, to get to Terrapin...

"On the End of A Good, Long Run!"

~~~~~~~~
I posted recently about the decision of Jill & Phillip Chapman Lesh to close the fabulous and visionary Restaurant/Venue known as Terrapin Crossroads (TXR) in San Rafael, CA, after a wonderfully inspiring 10 Year run...I will repost my comments again here below...But this got me thinking and remembering my 4 visits to TXR over the past few Years. I was 'Just Passing Through', as Mr. Natural would say...I was Tour Manager for the amazing NJ Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter phenom Keith Kenny on each of these occasions circa 2016 & 2017. I invited Keith to join me at this already-legendary venue, and he did, several times. Keith stood front and center for Phil's sets, not even wanting to miss the Sound Check from these Masters. We were treated to Restaurant sets by Lorin Rowan & Rattlebox, good food & drinks with dear friends Eric & Naomi Abrams, Cecilia Boehm, and my nephew Ed O'Donnell's son Luke engaged in fierce pillow fights with other kids in the backyard patio. We saw up and coming bands perform inside and outside on the back Patio. (I never made it into The Grate Room though ) It was so inspiring and Spiritually nourishing to be part of this Life-Affirming atmosphere, where the Arts are supported and comfortable, Family-friendly camaraderie were the order of the day! Phil would hang out with his own Grandchildren in the Restaurant. Doesn't get any more down Home than that! I'm pleased to say, I was able to take advantage of the relaxed atmosphere and shake Phil's hand and thank him for creating this fine Venue. He was gracious and appreciative. A pretty big impact this place had on me for only 4 visits! It's hard for me to imagine the mixed emotions being felt right now by my many Bay Area friends who have made TXR their favorite watering hole, aka 'Church', on relaxed sunny Sunday afternoons filled with all of the above and often FREE Musical Performances by local and National luminaries, from Peter Rowan, David Nelson, Stu Allen, Barry Sless, Melvin Seals, Jason Crosby, Boo Reiners, Scott Guberman, Chris & Lorin Rowan and so many more! I have to believe this now creates a vast void in the cultural fabric of San Rafael & Marin County, but that hopefully someone may be inspired by this successful model and create something new to rise to the occasion going forward. Phil & Jill proved it can be done, and very well at that! Here's hoping someone shares and executes their vision in the near future...
I know I'm running long in the tooth here, but I am quite filled with emotion, as we come to this 'Crossroads' (pun intended). To me, it's reminiscent of my ambivalent feelings walking back into The Warfield after we lost Jerry, or The Closing of Wetlands in NYC.
Be that as it may, Pete Shapiro proved with the Phoenix-like rebirth of Brooklyn Bowl(s) and The 'jewel' The Capitol Theatre. "Just goes to show, you don't ever know, Watch each card you're playing, and play 'em slow, Don't you let that Deal go down..."
With all these Grate memories and mixed emotions churning around, I have scoured my C/ Drive and phone camera roll for this grand collection of Retrospective memories that myself and my good friends have shared at TXR over recent years. Since I have difficulty separating the TXR memories from all of our surrounding Bay Area memories during the Keith Kenny West Coast Tours that we went on, I am expanding the photo Retrospective to include some of those surrounding memories as well! Hopefully the next West Coast Tour that I join Keith on (2022?), there will be some new Home for Music and Camaraderie that approaches the Terrapin Crossroads mark of Excellence!
Thanks, Phil & Jill !!! Long May You Run!
Forever Grateful!
Cheers
Bobby O
[Prior post revisited]:
Man, this place is gonna be sorely missed! Phil Lesh accomplished a lot in establishing a very Family-friendly Restaurant/Venue where Heads with kids could enjoy top-notch Live music, a children's playground, a fire pit, full bar and pretty damn good food at fair prices. I was lucky enough to have been there 4 times, and being that Phil was often just hanging out with his kids and grandchildren, I was able to shake his hand and thank him for his wonderful accomplishment at TXR. There were 3 stages, one in the Restaurant where you could see amazing ensembles like (Lorin & Chris) Rowan Brothers, and there was The Grate Room, holding a few hundred and the outdoor Patio Stage, where I spent most of my time there. Thanks for creating a viable and sensible business model, Phil Lesh. If you don't feel like managing something like this at this point, hey, you're 81, and after your amazing 9 night run at The Capitol Theatre, you can do no wrong in my book! Do whatever you please, Buddy! We are very Grateful for you!!! NFA  (~); }
Now that TXR is gone, where shall the dishwasher go for the song?
https://relix.com/news/detail/phil-and-jill-lesh-officially-announce-tha...
Phil and Jill Lesh have officially announced that their San Rafael, CA venue Terrapin Crossroads has closed. Rumors of the venue’s demise have circulated over the past few weeks; Terrapin Crossroads’ bar, restaurant and main Grate Room performance space have all been closed since the start of the global pandemic, though the club has continued to host outside music in an adjacent outdoor field in recent months. According to a report in the Marin Independent Journal, Terrapin’s use of the outdoor space was tied to their lease at the San Rafael club property, and the Terrapin team was unable to negotiate a deal with their landlord. The spot is rumored to become a Jeep dealership.
A note from the Lesh family reads:
Dear Terrapin Nation,
After almost ten amazing years, we’ve decided that it’s time to close the book on this chapter of Terrapin Crossroads. We’re incredibly thankful for the staff, musicians, and community that made Terrapin special, and we hope that you’ll remember the past decade the same way that we do; with love, joy, and a deep sense of pride at what we all built together.
We explored all possible options in an attempt to keep Terrapin at its current location, but after carefully considering a number of various partnerships and collaborations, we decided that the best thing for us, and for Terrapin, was to bid farewell – for now. In that spirit, while Terrapin’s time at its current location may be coming to a close, we know that Terrapin Crossroads was never a location – it was a community. We hope to see you all soon, in some form, somewhere down the road.
With Love and Gratitude,
Phil and Jill Lesh
The Grateful Dead bassist was inspired to open Terrapin Crossroads, which was located at the site of a former seafood restaurant that his band Furthur had played, after performing with his sons at one of Levon Helm’s Midnight Rambles. They officially opened for business in early 2012 and the space has hosted a mix of Dead-inspired acts and other musicians ever since. According to a 2012 interview with Relix Editor-in-Chief Mike Greenhaus, Lesh envisioned Terrapin as a community center as well as a venue. The club also gave rise to The Terrapin Family Band, a once loose ensemble that has grown in one of the bassist’s primary projects. Terrapin Crossroads’ final show was a performance by Stu Allen & Mars Hotel on Halloween.
Iron Springs is also closing?
For some of us it was our local bar, and for a deadhead the best local bar imaginable.   While the outside and grateroom had fine performances the bar imho was the beating heart of that place.  And with shakedown vendors in the lot, $12beers and $45 tickets for what was a regular pint and a free bar show it felt like it's been over for a while now.   From opening night to the Halloween closer...what a run...to all those zoners whose paths I crossed, thank you...for a real good time!!
yes Right on!
J wurst
When reminiscing about Terrapin Crossroads
And all of the amazing experiences and blessings
I do remember that I bought you a bottle of your favorite whiskey as a token or to return the favor when you gave me a free ticket to one of the severely distanced Beach Park shows
It's sitting in my garage right now so whenever our paths may happen to cross
terrapin is timeless
And always in our hearts
Doesn't get any easier reading memories.
^^^ Hang in there, Peak.
There is a musical farewell happening at Iron Springs / Fairfax, this info is from their website:
As of November 13th, after 17 amazing years, it’s time for Iron Springs to say goodbye.  We have been acquired by HenHouse Brewing and will be closing permanently after dinner service.  You can read more about it here.  We have had so much fun being the public house, local hangout, and extended living room for Fairfax and beyond for the past 17 years and we thank you all. More fun to come in the new year from HenHouse!
If you want to visit us before we close, here’s what you need to know: We are open for inside and outside dining through November 13th.  You can make your reservations through November 12th online at the bottom of our website.
On November 13th, we’ll be opening at 2pm with a limited menu and kicking off a barn burner of an outside music evening at 5pm with Paulie Mac from KNBR, and closing it out with the Fairfax All Stars at 6pm (Rob Hooper, Bryan Horne, Danny Uzilevsky, Jonathan Korty, Barry Sless, and Lorin Rowan).  All outside tables for the show are completely booked and sold; however standing room only tickets will be available day of.  If you’d like to make a reservation for inside or outside lunch, or for inside dinner, please call the pub directly at 415-485-1005 and speak to Mike.
Can someone grab me a sless stout bomber?
They should just change this to a street party.
I wanna go!
Bret, I've enjoyed too many bar shows with you than I can count, perhaps starting with that blackout show.
Thanks for kidnapping me that one night that we left from TXR to see Bobby perform with American Babies (I think that was the name of Tom Hamilton's band, details blur at times).
^^^ Right? ... it's the only music I'm aware of for this weekend... what else is happening?
Sad to be losing yet another Marin institution. I'll be at my usual table at ISP on Saturday night.
Hey John,
the power outages show w acoustic bass does stand out among the gazillion musical highlights.  Always enjoyed seeing you in the room.  That run down to sweetwater was a hoot...we were spoiled with good music and good folks to enjoy it with.  Be well my friend.
>>>Doesn't get any easier reading memories<<<
Yeah, it's gotta' be raw right now for you Peak old boy.
But hang in there, the memories will be sweet once they have some time to age.
This is a good time to keep that old saying close - "Don't feel bad we're losing it, feel great that we had it."
Ramble on Phil!!!!!
<<<They should just change this to a street party>>>
It basically is
was dancin' in the bike lane during Stu's Dancin' in the Streets last week...
Hey Local!
You've had some personal times at the clubhouse, right from the start, and some stories to tell.
You & I shared a few together.
Ah, the times we had.
And more to come?
One can only hope.
LONG LIVE PHIL LESH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LONG LIVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
^ I remember reading posts from you and Felina during the early days, getting me all worked up.
was dancin' in the bike lane during Stu's Dancin' in the Streets last week...<<<
We used to play for Harleys, now we play for bikes.
Can anyone tell me if dogs are allowed at Iron Springs and if it's okay to bring a camp chair for the street or sidewalk?  They are not answering their phone right now.
Asking for a friend.
I just signed up for the waitlist for a table at multiple time intervals, too. Doubtful that I'll get one, though.
I have seen camp chairs on the sidewalk across the street which is not a bad spot
^^^ Thanks -- that reminds me that I did see camp chairs along the parking lot across the street when I went there earlier this summer.
Good backup plan.
So the TXR era comes to a close... so much history with that building, so I really hope it doesn't become a car dealership (though it wouldn't surprise me).  My wife lived near there when she was a little kid and her dad used to tell her that a man lived in the boat and many years later, we would get married right up the road.
I also had some great times seeing DNB there when it was still the Peddler and before a lot of the obnoxious, entitled, violent rail riders were on the scene (one of the few downsides of the Phil starting a clubhouse).
I did like the way Phil re-configured the stage, and he always seemed happy playing there.
And though it wasn't always the easiest place to have spontaneous pre-show gathering, people managed to find ways to make it work.  It definitely made it special to see familiar faces all around.
983956.jpg
But more times than not, we would meet up and hang out in the lot or bar.
983867.jpg
One of my all time favorite shows was when DNB played the grate room and towards the end of their killer show we were treated to a kickass impromtu performance in the bar by another old timer.
I'll miss the laid back scene after shows, though photobombing Mookacabras are real!
Good times!
ZONERS_at_TXR.jpg
I wonder who'll get this:
txrsteelie.jpg
Of course now I wish I had gone a whole bunch more, but the 2 hour drive there in heavy traffic during commute hours, and having to get hotel if I wanted to party was kind of a deterrent.
TXR is history, but like so much of the music scene I/we have enjoyed for so many decades, its memories will always hold a place in our hearts.
Nice post Hall.
Good to see Cap'n Budley in that very cool pic. I miss that guy.
Backstage Grate Room.
Wow, Hall, those are wonderful photos of really fun times. We were (are) among the luckiest people on Earth. The Gregg Allman bar show was on Johnny D.'s birthday, a couple of days after mine, one of that great run of DNB shows.
I don't know what's to get about the steel Stealie, except that it's backstage and it was the work of a couple of Zoners, Purple Haines and MSG Man, and a gift from them to Phil. I have one of the mini's made at the same time hanging in my kitchen. What else am I not getting?
love these images...so nice to see Zoner smiles... thanks for posting.
Thank you so much Hall. Keep the pictures coming folks. The stealie is put aside for Phil. Another sad day today at the clubhouse as we unscrew, unplug and turn off.
Sigh...
Pete, Did they sell that sound system from the Grate Room?
Sad......
All the sound gear and I mean all the gear has been organized in the Grate Room. Phil and his boys will be using it.
Yeah, so great to see the smiles at the Zoner gatherings. And great stories. You CA folks know how to do it. Thanks for sharing.
OK, I stumbled upon this photo and just had to add it:  This had often been my favorite spot to sit and chill upstairs while the bar shows continued late into the night.  Man, I'm gonna miss this wonderful place.
Thanks for posting that Judit; That one did get me when I saw it yesterday on the IJ site.
Unfortunately, nailed it.
But, I know the Phoenix of Phil and the Terrapin Nation will rise again, in one form or another!!!!!
I look forward to everyone's stories about TXR, we should start a new thread deadicated to that....
Cheers everyone!!!!!
The closing party at ISP was a real blast last night and the place went out with style!
^^^ Agree! Was sorry to have to leave early -- on my way out of the lot I heard the page for Pete Sears, wah.
I didn't know anyone there, but got rockstar bar stool and parking spot and enjoyed a Sless Stout and a salad, and the locals at the bar sure were friendly!
Turtle, I totally spaced on picking up a Stout for you... maybe someone else can help out with that.
...and nice to meet you, Woz, if only for a sec!
6D18A1C5-6029-4623-A45B-1DB74AE1CED1.jpegNice to meet you too! Pete joined for several songs. Mookie also played on one. That band was great and I had a blast!
Nice!
no worries llolo!
^Is that Chementi?  wink
And now this
Ha, amazing.
I guess Halloween wasn’t the last live music at TXR after all...
>>>What else am I not getting?
Sorry Judit, I see now that it could have 2 meanings... I meant, "who gets to take possession of it".
I'd like to purchase a bunch of SBD recordings of TXR shows that occurred after they stopped selling them.
Would be for a good cause (or several good causes, including my own personal/spiritual health).  cheeky
Does anyone know who will play at the Garage Sale? Will Phil bid us farewell?
^^^ Agree... and ballpark music times, please.
I want that chair/throne with the carved GD motifs that was in the restaurant back by the private booths...
That was Phil's GD Board of Directors chair, I highly doubt he's parting with that.....
Someone should buy the urinal
and turn it into a virgin garcia in the bathtub-like shrine in their front yard
Phil took his chair and no he won't be playing.
here's a short video link that shows some of the items available at Thursday's garage sale at Iron Springs Fairfax... they are selling beer, too
I started a thread, but this might be a better place for this posting. Thanks, Noodler.
Still miffed at Delta Airlines.  My only trip to the bay area we had a 7:30 AM flight back to DC, leave for airport at 5:30AM on Friday.
Phil playing at TxR Thursday but we did not even consider due to early flight.
Flight changed many times, did not leave SF until 4:30 PM local time.
Ah well, you can't do everything in life.
We did have a replica: Phil show at Jake Peavey's "clubhouse", Cedar Street Social Club, here in Mobile.
Life, it is funny.
Looks like Terrapin Crossroads is on Craigslist...  posted a week ago;
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/off/d/san-rafael-for-sale-waterside/749...
Not the first time that ad has been posted and it won't sell for $5M, the property needs too msny repairs.
I'm a little surprised Shapiro isn't stepping in to make it his west coast home.
He is actively expanding his "Garcia's" brand, and I know he was interested in the property before The Plague.
I'm still betting he's sniffing around it.
Yeah, the real estate market is finally softening.
Six months ago, places would sell well over asking price in bidding wars between people who had never even seen the place in person.   Not anymore.
Craigslist seems like a desperate reach.
 Further signs of a cooling real estate market.  The Fed interest rate hike will make financing for properties like TXR prohibitive for many.  Supposedly, the economists expect to slow inflation by curbing spending.  We'll see how that plays out.  Lots of pricey tours right now as everyone looks to get on the road after a 2-year shutdown.  Will the ticket market loosen up like the housing market?
Better ask LiveNation 'bout dat cuz, yea, $375 for average pavilion seats for DeadCo & Phish, for example, is out of bounds and ridiculous
Bummed that Phil moved on from this venture.  We had a couple wedding anniversaries there and always enjoyed our time there.
