I was in Montana the summer of 1997, which was the last year they had no numerical speed limit for cars, but instead had a law that said the limit was whatever was "safe and prudent" for the conditions. We had some fun, fun, fun on the Montanabahn.
Were you pulled over? They have those army checkpoints every 50 or so Km on Mex 1 and some others outside the bigger towns. They usually waive you through if you are gringo in a nice rig. Never got pulled over in Mexico, but known people who did and got shook down.
Lots of checkpoints near the Mexican border, but if you are white, they usually just waive you through. Also got stopped at a checkpoint in Ohio the day after Buckeye 94. They were only pulling aside hippies and black people.
>>>Quêbec counts for two states, Eh ?
I don't know but got shook down at the border going into Canada twice. Once in Alberta at a crossing in the sticks of Idaho and another time in Ontario coming over from Detroit.
Been pulled over a few times - MA, NH, OR - mostly as a youth, but at this point in my life I have driven over a million miles without a moving violation.
I remember getting pulled over for rolling through a 4 way stop as I was passing through a small town in Illinois on the way back from Tinley Park 90 and the cop made me drive to an ATM machine to take out money to pay the ticket in cash. I was too stoned at the time to argue.
used to be a way bigger issue in the norte, easy gringo shakedowns. that, to my knowledge, doesn't happen so much these days.
most checkpoints are ok, however they do NOT wave you through for being a gringo in a nice rig...oh no. it also has eased up...they used to be way more stressful. keeping some cold sodas and nudie mags would always get you through, or cigs...
the baja sur stop i was traveling by myself and was pulled over in the middle of the desert. searched with automatic weapon pointed at my head...not too fun but was fine.
