What in the good fuck, Disney? First you rip my heart out with Han Solo, now you double down with Luke?

When Star Wars was in the creative hands of baby boomers - they knew how to do it right.

This Rian Johnson Gen-Xer's movie not so good?

Have you seen the new film, 6ix?

Murdering Chewbacca in that fashion was out of line

Without question the bloodiest Star Wars death ever.

So much blood.

Too much forced comedy, no new music, shitty new characters, no need to kill off Luke, Leah living through the explosion was dumb, and finally the journey to the dark side was lame and not scary.  It had some good space fight scenes, but the lightsaber fights were poor.  The best part was the casino and the snow cats.  Lots more women characters in this one.  Too much foreshadowing too.

Some rough acting in this one. Also, just some basic fundamental film continuity issues with the storyline. Why was del toros role even in the story? Was barely relevant. Compositionally, it was pretty bad as well,

Agree with basically everything you said, guys. A disappointing entry in the franchise, I thought.

The portrayal of basically every male character in the film was ridiculous. I get that "you go girl!" feminism is a prominent feature of the new films, but Disney couldn't throw us a solid male character?

Meh.

Meh.

I never bothered to see the second one.  I hear it was pretty good.

Yeah, I agree Mark. I feel like they almost wrote Finn out of the story. Had few lines and some pretty cheesy one liners.

Haven't seen it yet but it doesn't sound like a Poe Finn Rey love triangle I thought was gonna happen.

I thought it was pretty good and I agree with most of the point you mention.  It was a nice night out with my family, though, regardless.. my stepson has never seen Star Wars and he enjoyed himself.

Couple observations:

- In the first 10 minutes of the movie, I thought the "I think you're being.. tooled" line was lame.

- The asian woman flying into Finn so he wouldn't kill himself was weak.

- Kilo Ren is a big softy

- Rae is cute

To all of the people out there who are “up in arms” about the topless Princess Leis scene and the fact that Carrie Fisher didn’t “authorize” that footage I have two things to say:

1) if you don’t want to be filmed topless, don’t take your top off in your dressing room, where people sometimes put hidden cameras.

2) definitely don’t DIE before a movie comes out where they have topless footage of you, because they’ll use it. For sure.

it’s that simple

Snoke was a completely wasted character. I honestly can't make sense of his role in the films at all.

No backstory, no clear connection to any of the characters or events, and no discernable motive besides "evil".

Meeeeh.

What are you talking about, Bucky?

Don't forget that these movies are made for pre-teens.

Adults seem to most often criticize the movies as if they were made for them - they're not, necessarily.

If you can really obliterate a fleet of massive star destroyers by simply sending in one kamakazi, almost empty rebel cruiser set to hyperdrive, why wasn't the same tactic employed in any other space battle. And can't you get a droid to do it?

i have been content with my decision to keep up on the latest star wars movies by reading all the plot points on wikipedia after the films are released. no need to waste an afternoon on this.

although if that tommy wiseau star wars film ever happens i will be there on opening night totally dressed up like the most autistic comicon weeaboo of all time.

Took me back to when i was 10.

So much loved it!!

I thought it was fair at best and would probably rank it 6 out of the 9 movies out.   It seemed to be bridging the gap between the first and second series of movies....some very interesting moments with poor dialogue and stupid stupid jokes.  Leia in space might have been the breaking point.

With Rogue 1, I went back to the theater within the week to see it again.   I have no interest to see this again in the theater.

Rian Johnson is the new Prequel George Lucas.

^Lol. I asked my buddy what he though of the new Star Wars and he replied “It was better than Phantom Menace.”.

Having had some time to process what I saw and felt about this latest flick - gotta say, aside from stunning visuals, design and eye candy nearly every character was a flawed let down.

Luke was mopey, depressing, flawed and zen-like...
Rey's purpose and line delivery was simply confusing and to a great extent, boring and pointless.
Finn's spirit and determination were admirable, but his heroics were totally uninspired.
Leia's Superman BS - floating through the vacuum of space only to survive tossed all logic out the window - but what are ya gonna do with a franchise that often places glowing dead characters into scenes as if they are alive?
Vice Admirable was unlikable and her hair do was a trainwreck.
Kylo was totally compromised and lacking the conviction of a real villain.
Poe has the conviction of a true hero but wasn't particularly heroic.
As others have pointed out - the point of Snoke, his back story and character development were totally lost on me and anyone not thoroughly invested in the full history of this franchise (even though I've seen all these movies starting with the first back in '77.)
The Porg's were pointless and the presence of Chewbacca was simply to add familiar window-dressing to a not very well told story.

Everything but the packaging here was watered down with triteness...

>>>Vice Admirable was unlikable and her hair do was a trainwreck

Line of the thread. Love it!

>>>Line of the thread.

Maybe, but I loved her. Laura Dern was damn sexy in this role, and I'm way sad that she's already gone.

Meh. The best part of Admiral Holdo was when she died in a blaze of glory.

Clearly unfit for a leadership position in the Rebellion.

I agree that the timing is all fucked up.

I imagine that the film would have been better as a season of ten episodes.

It might explain why she had to wait, or why else whatever.

>>>Meh. The best part of Admiral Holdo was when she died in a blaze of glory.

Agreed....it was by far the best part of the movie for me.  Within the 5-10 seconds of dead silence after the light speed kamikaze some guy behind me said aloud:    "Shiiiiite"

Hysterical, whole room heard him.

>>>Mark Hamill on the new film "That's not my Luke Skywalker"

Personally, old grouchy Luke was one of the best characters of the movie, having come full circle to being a cynical, Yoda like hermit.

I see your point, Ken.

Washed up,hippie Luke? Can’t say I was really a fan.

I’ve seen the movie twice now and I’m more disappointed after the second viewing.  The Force awakens was better.  This one was a cartoon.  It’s like they squeezed a few movies into one.

I agree with most of the points people r making in here.

i'm fine with Luke being disenfranchised and dying but he didn't even really train Rey much at all.

what the hell was that dark side tide pool snapping scene about?

snoke wasn't explained or given any kind of backstory.

that almost, but not really, love side story they were trying to work with Finn had zero chemistry.

del toro space con man was unnecessary.

kept waiting for hilleiary Clinton to die but it just didn't happen.

poe was pretty much worthless.

whole pace, rhythm and tone didn't feel very Star Wars.

can't say I was a big fan...

>>>but he didn't even really train Rey much at all.

I agree.  I also felt Yoda didn't really train Luke much at all, either.

The whole Luke and Kyle scene still makes no sense to me. I mean how did Luke die? It was all very confusing and really not much of a climax. That cut to Luke after klyo figures out he was a hologram or whatever was hysterical. It looked like he was taking a shit in Indian Style. No foreshadowing for that scene at all. It didn’t really make any sense.

The funniest part by far is when Carrie fishers frozen dead body farted and flew back into the rebel ship. I mean wtf ‘‘twas That all about.

>>>  I also felt Yoda didn't really train Luke much at all, either.

and they made a big deal about that in empire when he took off to face Vader cause he wasn't ready which is y he lost.

and even that was after way more training than Rey got.

gimme some rock levitations while doing hand stands, anything...

loved Luke(and his character) in the movie and how the movie expanded on the force, in general, instead of notions of chasing prophecies, among other issues the Jedi had in the prequels.
yoda knew, he said fuck it back then.

<<< No foreshadowing for that scene at all. It didn’t really make any sense

it made perfect sense.

he literally said he wasnt going to show up, face the entire empire and save the day.

that wasnt enough foreshadowing?

We do understand that the limited training -- pull to the dark is side -- is kinda how this whole story works?

Agree w most...overall, i thought it was ok...but, coulda been so much better, and it had alot of weak moments...

One thing i always laugh at, is when kyle kills Snoke (if i have all character names right..i get em all mixed up..lol)...in the red room w Rae, when Rae is totally under Snokes control...i mean, this is the strongest evilest , most powerful, anti - jedi powerful entity in universe right?? And kyle musters up his mind over matter jedi power and moves light saber to slice snoke on half??? ....but, then he barely has powers to fight off the goon squad guards...lol...happens somewhere in every flik theyve done...

I did really like the very end..not the luke part.. but, the lil kid w the broom...thought that was cool

>>>>but, then he barely has powers to fight off the goon squad guards

Were the guards Sith in the training?   That fight sequence was one of the better scenes in the movie.  Very stylistic and reminiscent of the old Shaw Brothers Kung Fu movies.

And what ever became of the handful of Luke's jedis in training who ran off with Kylo Ren after he burned down Luke's jedi academy?

^^valid point, and another good question....;)

Can’t remember when Luke said that, 73. It wa just a terrible fight sequence with a bunch of cheesy one liners. And why did he die? Didn’t really make any sense.

i agree that the fight sequence with the with gaurdz was pretty awesome. One of the better scenes in the movie.
