Some Good News For The Environment

Forums:

I think we could use some good news.  Some of you may recall a TED Talk from a few years back of a Dutch kid who's designing a system to filter plastic out of our oceans.  His plan is materializing faster than anyone's expected and he anticipates being up and running in just 12 months, 2 years ahead of schedule:

(Yeah, I hate Yahoo News.  It generally blows and is over sensationalized crap, but they got this story right)

Looks good on Power Point, wonder how it'll deal with storms/rough seas.  Also slim on details about how "bycatch" is avoided.  And centrifuging out all the plankton?  Doubt that could really be done on a large scale.  I hear the Iranians may have some extra ones.  Also have heard that recycled plastic is becoming practically worthless these days as an unfortunate result of successful recycling programs.  But hope it succeeds nonetheless.  As an Engineer I'm always pessimistic about taking ideas from the drawing board to real life.

Years ago vacationing in the Caribbean, went on an "eco-tour" coral reef diving charter boat using local fishermen as guides.  They did a good job of getting us there & back, especially when the small boat got caught up in a sudden mini perfect storm of triangular 15' waves in a narrow channel, resulting from the tide in one direction/wind in the other, & in cooking us Jerk chicken, fish, & plantains for lunch.  However, I was VERY put off that the guides were chainsmoking the whole time & throwing their butts right in the ocean . . . told our hosts about it & they just shrugged their shoulders "can't change Local customs" . . .

Nice. Now all we have to do is stop the acidification, fertilizer/pesticide/oil runoff and overfishing.
