Some Good Covid News

Forums:

When someone contracts the novel coronavirus, his or her body’s immune system launches a defense, including producing antibodies that circulate in the blood to help identify infectious invaders. These circulating antibodies offer some protection against future infection (for how long, we still don’t know). Scientists have now engineered clones of these antibodies — what we call monoclonal antibodies — and they are showing to be effective both therapeutically and to prevent infection.

Rapid, low-cost saliva tests are also coming... Imagine a test you could take at home every day, that gives you an answer in a few minutes after spitting into a vial and costs only $1 to $5.

The debate is finally over: Masks work. It took three months, but universal mask-wearing is catching on.

Consensus has finally emerged that airborne spread is happening....This means that there will be more messaging coming out from the WHO and other organizations recommending that people add a new control to their toolkit for fighting this virus — healthy building strategies, such as higher ventilation, better filtration and the use of portable air-cleaning devices.

There is some science showing that past exposure to common-cold coronaviruses might be playing a protective role for some people. This is a big claim — and I should caution that it is not fully resolved — but several studies are now showing that 20 to 50 percent of people who had never been exposed to the novel coronavirus have immune cells — known as memory T cells — in their body that react to this new virus.

Vaccine trials seem to be working, and drug manufacturers have already said they might be able to deliver doses by October...if we get a vaccine within 12 months, that will be the quickest vaccine ever developed — by several years.

We need some good news because its pretty clear by now that significant portions of the country have adopted a "Damn the Torpedoes" approach and aren't looking back.

“We asked ourselves, since this virus is just like a nano-particle or a quantum dot with a diameter between 100nm to 140nm in terms of its size and electrical properties, can we detect it using methods from the worlds of physics, photonics and electrical engineering?

“We discovered that the answer is yes, this virus resonates in the THz frequency, and spectroscopy in these frequencies reveals it promptly.”

And this will make it go all away like magic

The Trump administration has ordered hospitals to bypass the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and, beginning on Wednesday, send all coronavirus patient information to a central database in Washington — a move that has alarmed public health experts who fear the data will be distorted for political gain.

after 20 years of teaching preschool I've had  pretty much every  cold virus  that ever there was. I like this theory that this could somehow help with immunity to Covid 19, but I suspect it's bunk otherwise having been exposed to many cold viruses would make one more immune to cold viruses, and that's just not the case.

not feeling positive about a vaccine since more reports are circulating about people contracting Covid 19 twice. A few more months and we'll find out that there is no long term immunity?

>better filtration and the use of portable air-cleaning devices.

recently had my teeth cleaned and the dental hygienist had a combo dyson fan/air filter at her side. she said it was mostly to help keep her cool with all the protective gear, and also  (hopefully) effective at filtering the virus.

 >better filtration and the use of portable air-cleaning devices<

I have an air filter that uses a technology developed by NASA, it kills viruses and bateria in the air and on surfaces.

I read about European research that proposes increased levels of Vitamin D3 = better resistance to COVID -- but now I can't find the link...anyone heard about that?

A few days ago MarkD posted some long-winded jabber about vitamin D. I figured it was probably put out by the people who make vitamin D.

And I was just saying that a reliable home test that everyone could do would be a great potential breakthrough at containing the plague. The only problem is that many people just wouldn't do it, or ignore a positive result.

Friggin' people.

Been taking D 3 since the start. My wife works for Pulmonary doctor and he said to start taking it because it helps your immune system.

A bunch of studies on vitamin D3 came out in June, showing a correlation between low levels and contracting the virus. Those studies have been shown to be false. However, people who live in the North should take it anyway.

Cool, thanks, will take a look. I already take 5000 /IU per day.

If true, I'd like to see a test for the T-cells.

My bones have felt a lil harder lately thru this corona, added Benny, sweet

The more mask I see means the less Trump votes imo

seeing a huge increase in masks

“We don’t want the guidance from CDC to be a reason why schools don’t open,” Pence said.

Here is another bit of good news.  Over all Covid death rates in the US are holding steady despite a month long surge in infection numbers:

July 15 covid daily deaths.jpg_0.png

This is probably the result of better treatment and the fact that the newer infections are striking younger and healthier people (according to the data, the modest spike on July 1 represents more states starting to report "probable" cases).  But while the death rate has essentially flat lined and is much lower than at the height of the pandemic in the Northeast in April, its not decreasing at the rate it should be.

The media will keep playing the Covid card all the way to the election. Then they'll be done with it.

The media will keep playing the Covid card all the way to the election. Then they'll be done with it.

Are the hospitals and morgues playing the Covid card too?!

Timpy, do you wear a mask when you go out (other than to places that you're required to do so)?

Aces and Eights

The COVID Deadmans Hand...

Actually, hospitals are playing the Covid card but that's a different discussion. Every state is playing the card as far as funding. Yes, Brian I have to wear a mask all day on the job site that I work on. If it's not an N95 or 99 mask then you aren't protected at all. You are impeding your breathe if you're sick but that's it. The CDC covers their tracks on their site by using the word "may" as in "wearing masks may prevent the spread". This is a good way to protect them from lawsuits as the word "may" means "might". This is because not all people are wearing mask rated by NIOSH which is the company that rates masks for OSHA. The word "will" would make them liable. When I walk outside and I'm not around anyone I do not wear a mask as there is absolutely no need at all.

Technically, you really should have to be fit tested to wear a N95 or 99 mask. This is a test wear your bend and breathe for a couple minutes to make sure that your lungs are able to support you're breathe while wearing a respirator. Wearing these masks in temperature above 85 degrees is actually very dangerous and older folks should take that into consideration.

I have N95 masks that were gifts from a painter friend when I was doing some sanding and for working around dust, as well as when there've been wildfires filling the area with smoke. I have no difficulty using them while breathing, though it's a bit tedious having them on. These are pretty lightweight single vent; there must be more than one kind?

The media will keep playing the Covid card all the way to the election. Then they'll be done with it. <<

Holy fuck.  You're a moron.

This isn't Benghazi.

I'm not a microbiologist and epidemiologist like Timpy, but I feel like if I'm wearing a cloth mask and others also are, it has to give more protection than no masks at all. It's like the pull-out method, which is risky at best. If you use that 6 year old condom that's been smooshed one your wallet, and pull out, it's much safer. Like I said, I'm no expert, but some mask is better than no mask.

Have all the people who don't wear masks cut the seat belts out of their cars? I wouldn't want to government to infringe on their right to die.

>>It's like the pull-out method

Spot on analogy for me.  Nice work.

I need to add that I don't wear the N95's for Covid-19, I wear a cloth mask. These days I only wear the N95's for working in dust at home.

pretty good analogy keithk1

Cloth masks don't protect you from viruses. The safety guy for our district council of painters and allied trades told us a long time ago that if it's not rated by NIOSH or ANSI then it does nothing. If you think putting a piece of t shirt over your face is somehow giving you any kind of real protection from a virus then I don't know what to tell you. It does impede the process of your breath. I had to take many hours of safety courses for my job and I'm certify in a few different OSHA safety standard courses. Do the research yourself. Nice try at an analogy but it's just not backed by anything but your own arrogance.

seems people are just very afraid and I get that but maybe just chill out. Keep your distance and if you hear someone coughing don't be a fool and think your bandana is going to save you.

What exactly are you angry about Bluesnote? The media already gave up on Covid for a while when protests and looting were taking place. Nobody seemed to care about Covid when when 100s of thousands of people were in the streets during a pandemic.

Are people back to being afraid of Covid yet or are their still protests coming up?

Dr Timpane is a stable genius and knows more than anyone!

My arrogance? It's what pretty much every health official and expert is saying. You took an OSHA course and think you know it all. That, chief, is arrogance. I think I'll trust the head of the CDC over you when it comes to this.

Trumpane

You wear a mask to protect others from you, in case you're infected but don't know it yet. A cloth mask is better than nothing.

Timpy Tantrum.  <.  >.  Bye bye Bry

Was I naive in thinking that all Zoners knew that, Surfdead? I keep learning.

Yes, Surfdead. If someone is not wearing a mask though and is sick and you are wearing one then you aren't protected. Not at all.

BK, don't forget to turn on the Tv and learn how to hate today. Is it Trump? BLM? Russia? China? Biden? Police? White folks? Black folks? Immigrants? bernie?

really make sure you get it in. Then when you see their corporate sponsorship make sure you go to Walmart or target and buy as much processes food you can and random bullshit you dont really need. Don't forget to cut up a piece of t shirt and put it over you fucking face before you leave the house. Remember when you're good and ready to go shit your brains out from all that processed food to use up some of that toilet paper you've been hoarding then stfu and go to mickey DS or chick fila for dinner. After all that turn back on the news get feared up and learn how to hate some more and go the fuck to sleep

Spit

now

spit into a cloth

which spit went farther?

and it works both way

Sweet rant, Trumpane. It's a big lol because I don't watch cable news, nor do I shop at WalMart or Target. And, my lord, the only one spewing hate is you.

I get it. Your daddy worked for a newspaper so you're an expert on the media. Your wife is a teacher so you're an expert on education, and especially Special Ed and students with disabilities. You took an OSHA 30 class and are an expert on epidemiology.

You're a legend in your own mind.

When a Bernie Bro who hates Biden turns into a Covid truther,

it seems quite possible that that they were really a Trumpkin all along.

^your view are more closely aligned w/ trump views than any bernie policy. lol weird steve is one dumb fuck.

eveybody has to wear masks for this shit to make sense and work.

Bk, seems like you think you know something about my life or my family but you haven't the faintest clue on
what it is you're talking about. You try to compare me to Trump to validate your fear and anger my making a false comparison to someone you hate and content. I doubt you'll be able to mask your feelings for very long that way but it's your choice.

seems that the new America of 2020 is based around trying to find something or someone to hate. Choose a side and hate the other side. Any topic you can think of where someone disagrees with what you're saying then hate them and lump them in with whatever category you have chosen to hate. Hate, hate, hate all day. Cool stuff. More of the same bullshit

Masks 4 All

the dems, even during a pandemic, still aren't allowed to endorse M4A.

nothing will change.

Take a lap, Timpy. Lol

have you even been following what bernie has been doing with his new bill?

he literally has a bill and has asked Andy Slavitt to write an op-ed together supporting M4A

which is Masks 4 All

if you didn't know, now you do.

other countries and even counties in the US have sent masks to all residents.

> A cloth mask is better than nothing.

a layered  cotton mask is very effective at stopping the spread

however N95s are the best

I'll play, pyramid.

What specific views do you think I have that align more closely to Trump than Bernie?

of course, thod.

he's the person you should've voted for.

corporate dems are closely aligned w/ republican/trump ideology.

bernie can be the US Mask Czar

Timpy is above the fray...

Thod do you even know what the definition of a "sock" is on the zone? I can't remember if you were on the old zone or not but I don't remember you from there if you were.

Is that what I want to do, Slack? If there's anything else you figured out for me, let me know.

There was a time I'd see something like that and think, "Andy Borowitz" or "The Onion".

We are the frog.  Can you feel the heat yet?

I like O'Donnell but they need to fix the lighting in his studio, he always looks all Jaundice in his skin tone

This is from a friend who is an emergency doctor in Miami earlier today...

"I have yet to admit one patient to the hospital with Covid symptoms since the recent surge. Things are actually busy with volume, but the acuity is low and death rate is non existent."

The idea it's mutating in manner that's allows it to spread easier but also become less virulent might be accurate?

That would be good news.

I believe there are many strains circulating and hospitals in other areas are full of very sick Covid patients, and the morgues are full. so there's that...

Apparently  20 somethings that smoke or vape are also getting really bad cases of Covid and needing to be hospitalized

Went to a local restaurant last evening for the first time in months. Only 3 tables of customers. Masks, distancing. It felt relatively safe..

Maybe we'll do it again next month. smiley

We're taking my daughter out for her 21st birthday on Tuesday. That'll be the first time out since February. It's outdoor rooftop dining, and Vermont has very low COVID. I guess I feel safe.
