So, the Oscars. Is Will Smith a hero or an asshole, and is Chris Rock a victim or a bitch?

Forums:

So, naturally I didn't watch The Oscars tonight, because I'm not a movie guy and I couldn't care less about "The Oscars", but I know how seriously people take this shit.

I guess tonight the host Chris Rock told a meek little joke about a shitty movie Will Smith's wife might make, and Smith walked onto the stage and bitch-slapped Rock on live TV, then roared that Rock should keep his wife's name "Out his fuckin' mouth!!!".

So, was Smith in the right to "defend" his wife, or was he just a classic Hollywood shithead who thought he was ALL THAT and couldn't take a little good-natured jabbing at the Oscars?

And did Rock, who was clearly shook by the moment, and who also generally presents himself as a tough guy "real man", cower at the moment? Should he have said or done something more to defend himself?

Whatever, in the end it's just a bunch of empty Hollywood BS, but it's pretty funny and is sure to make lots of news.

I've always thought that Smith is good & all but has always been a bit full of his "GREATNESS", and IMO tonight's foolishness just validated that, and I've also thought that Rock has always been a bit full of HIMself, and maybe tonight he got what he has been asking for.

But in the end, after watching the videos, I think that Smith comes off as a serious ego punk who thinks he's all that.

But is really just a pretender.

Like all actors are.

I like movies, and I like actors, but the Oscars and the shit tonight in particular just validate my idea that they're all lost in themselves, thinking they ARE what they pretend to be.

Which is what the rest of us ARE.

Damned Hollywood Elites!

I'm going to go with Chris Rock made a joke that was not a joke to Will Smith and that Will Smith assaulted Chris Rock by slapping him. I get that it was an emotional night for Will Smith, and maybe for Chris Rock, but... you don't slap someone, you use your words.

I don't watch the Oscars either, but saw it in replay a couple of times. Not great.

I must say, I might have missed something, or maybe they had a "slapstick" agreement beforehand, but...

It wouldn't surprise me if it was staged...   I thought the 3 gal host idea was great, with many hilarious moments.

I try and watch the Oscars / Grammys to see what i'm missing, it's small part to sacrifice for publicist and sundries

1. Learn to take a joke.   Even if it's about your wife, there is a time and place to respond and making a fool of yourself on national tv for someone who has made of fool of you (thanks Jada) for years is stupid.

2. If you're going to get all agro, throw a punch, not a bitch ass slap.

3.  shitty that it took away from Coda's night.

I think this was a Russian false flag operation to distract us from what's going on in Ukraine.

Or that Chris Rock made a joke, and Will Smith sullied his nice guy image with a 4.8 meltdown.

That couldn't have been real, because if it was Will Smith is a bitch.

Fuck the Fresh Prince

"A couple guys that where up to no good , started smokein' crack in my neighborhood. I took one little hit and my mom got scared, Your movin to your Uncles and aunties house in Bel Air"

I don't think he's a good enough actor to pull that off as a stunt. He apparently was rapping at a partylater that evening so we didn't gain anything from it

Will Smith is a little bitch

Now if Jada Snith had just stood up and walked out after the lame joke it would have been appropriate. And then Chris Rock would have looked like a little bitch.

no excuse to assault another person because you don't like a verbal joke. and Will Smith's  verbal tirade and disruption of the show was also inappropriate.
His non apology  to Rock during his acceptance speech was shameful.

I prefer March madness on the basketball court, and it was a terrific Stanford win over Texas  last night.

I saw it on replay and did he really touch him. Looks liike it was a fake hit. Have to see it again.

Will was laughing at the joke until he looked at Jada and then he decided to embrace some toxic masculinity.

Just another example of privilege and disconnect from consequences. If a janitor came up and hit Rock he'd have been arrested.

Teach your children well :(

'and that's how we do it'  -Jaden Smith

Next year Chris' larger cousin, The, should host.

He should have spanked him on the butt so he could say he “hit rock bottom”

Fuck Will Smith. What a complete fucking asshole. It was a joke no one would have remembered, but will now live on forever more. As one person said if that was Dave Chappell he would have done another hour of jokes just about Jada. The Oscar's should have Ricky Gervais host next year wearing a helmet.

Also forgot to say fuck all the people who gave him a standing ovation after he won his last ever Oscar. He should have been told to go home and sit in the corner like the child he is.

Hey did you guys hear the one about the twelve year old girl from Indiana who committed suicide last week?

(didn't think so)

Effectively bullied to death over her Alopecia

Will Smith is an asshole  and Chris Rock was the victim. It was a joke and that's his job.....not that this matters.

This situation started back in 2016, where Chris made a joke that targeted Jada.

https://www.rollingstone.com/movies/movie-news/will-smith-chris-rock-jad...

Be like Seinfeld: Make jokes about nothing.

IMNSHO, that wasn't a joke, it was a cruel comment, on a worldwide broadcast, but Will Smith was wrong to get up and smack Rock.

Might have been better just to approach him and stare at him. Would've had the same effect of interrupting the show and letting Rock know he's in serious jeopardy with a dude that played Mohammed F'in Ali, without teaching kids it's OK to smack the shit outta someone. But Smith is human.

I can hear the phrase in the future. "Man, he just walked up and Will Smith'd him."

Asshole.  Last night was simply confirmation.

Also in the near future,  'man you be such a whiny Smith hole'

but he's cool with her sleeping with other men?

mmk....

Turtle, what does their sex arrangements have to do with this?

I read that the Academy is investigated the incident, whatever that will mean.

If real , Smith was out of line. They are professionals. Thin skinned or not.

I didn't realize last night that Jada Smith had lost her hair because of Alopecia. I wonder if Rock knew that? It seemed to me that it was an off-the-cuff joke, not something planned, but either way I think that she and Smith should have just taken the joke and then commented on the bad taste later.

Now if she had cancer or something like that the joke would have been out of line.

Whatever, this is Hollywood at it's best, giving everyone something meaningless to talk about for a while.

Sadly, despite liking a good movie I never go to the movies, so did Smith deserve the Oscar? Did Coda?

>>>Now if she had cancer or something like that the joke would have been out of line.<<<

It was that far out of line

I am sorry you are unable to see this

Really, no matter what it was, slapping the guy was out of line. There are so many ways to deal with things that don't include assault.

Would it have felt different if the joker was a woman?

And that is not to say that Will Smith was right in that moment. Certainly there are other ways he could have more classily responded.

But this is also of course why we don't go around cracking jokes on each other's wives traumas in public, regardless

Because the rules say you might get socked up

...which is why the man didn't swing back.

Because he knows the rules.

Will Smith is an asshole and so is Lia Thomas
https://youtu.be/W95Vi1ZXzJo

Comedians roast actors at the Academy Awards. It's what they do. Yeah, the joke may have been shitty. It didn't warrant physical assault. There is no excuse for that.

>I read that the Academy is investigated the incident, whatever that will mean.

The Academy should be investigated for not taking action when someone was assaulted during the course of the event.

Security should have immediately whisked Will Smith outa there. You know, consequences.

Yes, Judit,  I know you're stating what you read and I'm just replying  that it's a joke that the Academy is going to investigate the incident. A little too late for all that and what in the the world is there to investigate? I suppose they can placate the conpsiracy theorists claiming that it was all a staged publicity stunt. Sure..

>Because he knows the rules.

Rules?  The rules are that you or anyone else doesn't sucker slap anyone on stage and get away with it. It's called assault.

And the Academy violated their own rules by allowing Will Smith to remain in the theater after he assaulted  the comedian on stage. Will Smith then proceeded to continue to disrupt the show by spewing his vitriol. Yeah, the "joke" was in bad taste but in no way makes Will Smith's behavior acceptable.

Security  should have immediately escorted Will Smith  OUT of the building.  His  wife could have accepted the award on his behalf. She's a grown woman and could have said whatever she wanted to if she was offended by the "joke".  Will Smith is no hero, far from it.

It's entertainment and I am sure Chris Rock doesn't mind all the attention.   The possibility of fisticuffs at awards shows will only boost ratings.

had a white actor walked up and slapped a black comedian on stage or vice versa, it's likely that someone would have been arrested on the spot. not that race should make any difference, but it does in the way this incident is being viewed by many, IMO. Assault is just that, focus on the behaviors not on the "actors".  anyone who thinks this incident was scripted or done for "entertainment" purposes  is looney tunes.

Chris Rock and other comedians need to hire body guards as long as people continue to make excuses for this type of assult.

Rock should go on Joe Rogan.

chris rock is as funny as willl smith is a good actor....

Meanwhile, MAGAmerica waits for Tucker Carlson to it what to think about all this.

Smith is an entitled prick.  Probably was real but the slap didn't land solidly. Fingers not a good palm whacking

Chris the whole time kept his smile, composure and somewhat amazingly a good stance while in dress shoes.

Will Smith did just share a decent apology on Instagram.

Kudos to his lawyer and PR team ;)

Chris Rock statement.jpg

Looks like things are moving in a positive direction. Good.

Well, the grammy's are next week, wonder if someone will punch Justin Bieber?

KanYE has been uninvited so that should at least diminish some of the potential drama at the Grammy's.

It looked incredibly fake to me.  I think it was staged to increase ratings.

What's fake is the Chris Rock apology

It's damage control on both sides. PR and nothing more.

Just to be clear for everyone the Chris Rock apology is not from Chris Rock. He didn't apologize and nor should he every apologize. Being offended is a choice.

This morning, Stern played a clip of Jada Pinkett Smith from her podcast last week. She stated that she didn't care what anybody said about her lack of hair.

I guess she really does.

To another point, before this I highly doubt that most people even knew that she has alopecia. When I saw her, I thought it was for fashion or a role, so the joke was pretty benign.

Gosh, I wonder what the interwebz will be outraged about next. It's Tuesday, and this story has gotten stale already.

Why wasn't anyone this worked up when kid rock hit tommy Lee at the VMA's?

People got really worked up when Britney kissed Madonna at the VMAs.

People get worked up. It's what we do when we're waiting for life to happen.

Not sure that anyone around here is worked up about it. It's something to make a post or two about. I'm not going gto stop watching Bel-Air because of it. That would be because they turned Carlton into an annoying bitch who hasn't danced once.

Maybe if Will had smacked him around a little back in the day, Carlton wouldn't be such an annoying little bitch.

They have him snorting blow and benzos. He should be a goddamn riot.

People got really worked up when Britney kissed Madonna at the VMAs.<<<

Lol. Indeed.

Would've been extremely different/wild if Chappell made that joke in Rock's place.

Chappell is already canceled, persona non grata.

These are tough times to be a comedian.

Chappelle's not canceled. He just signed another deal with Netflix recently.

Slapping Chris Rock was also a blow to men, women, the entertainment industry, and the Black community.

Fake !

If i was to take a side i'd go Chris Rock.

His previous joke about Jada was excellent.

Still fake.

I'm not going gto stop watching Bel-Air because of it. That would be because they turned Carlton into an annoying bitch who hasn't danced once.>>>>

well are you not watching it or are you still watching it?

>>well are you not watching it or are you still watching it?

I feel that there's room for a good Carlton dance, so I'll probably keep watching.

The first thing Mike said.

Fuck will Smith and as another chick losing her hair I'm thinking:

A) if it's a secret you ain't hiding it

2) if you're insecure cover it

And as a human will Smith is a guy who seems to be in a mental fucking health crisis

Finally, to echo Howard Stern's sentiments: the bully remained the cool guy and assaulted someone with impunity

Just another sign of these sad ass'n times

It has been announced that after the slapping Will Smith was asked to leave  & he refused.

Did he know he was about to win the award?

Ignorance, arrogance, & elitism.

Money & fame has gone to his head.

Maybe this sizes it up.

Will King Cuckold

I still don't understand what their sex arrangements have to do with any of this. It would be great if someone could explain it to me, please. Thanks.

^Assumption and some projection. The Smith's open marriage is something many people have difficulty understanding, therefore it must be reason for Will Smith's reaction.

Could be wrong, but that's my assumption.

Judit,  I would say that his sleeping arrangements might be what makes him either insecure or just plain cranky

And viewed that way, Smith's assault at the Oscars could be seen as an act of overcompensation.

Thanks, OCLT , Jill and mike. I appreciate reading your thoughts.

I can't believe that anyone cares about this shit.

They need to get the real Carlton to teach the fake Carlton how to do The Carlton.

Trevor Noah is hosting the Grammy's this Sunday. And Billy Strings will be performing.

It will be interesting to see how Trevor references the Oscar incident. Or if he attempts to ignore it, which would be weird for a comedian to leave alone.

Trevor Noah has his own drama going on with Kanye, who will not be performing at the Grammys because of his racial call-out of Noah.

I think Kanye will be allowed to be in the audience. So..better security?

My comment had more to do with him laughing at the joke until his wife gave him the look, and he went on attack like a German Shepard. They can fuck whoever they want it just seemed so subservient to me.

At least the Academy did not have to wait for the vote to boot his ass.
