Snowpocalypse is coming!

Forums:

They say we "might" get six inches or more next week on the valley floor.   Anyone in who has spent a winter in the Willamette Valley knows what that means - Snowpocalypse!

At some point every winter, there are dire warnings of impending snowfall in the valley which causes schools to close, businesses to shut down, empty shelves at grocery stores, and general panic.   Many times, no snow happens and it just rains, but occasionally it will be much more snow than expected.

I have lived in places like Wyoming and Vermont where deep snow is just a fact of life and people deal.  But out here, when it does actually snow, the town really can't function and the roads are genuinely much harder to deal with and are practically impossible to navigate.    Is that just a Willamette Valley thing or does this phenomena happen elsewhere?

Just like the yearly quarter-inch Rainpocalypse they have in LA.

The snow belt east of Cleveland can get a lot of snow coming off of Lake Erie.

I remember the blizzard of '77 - '78.

We were able to leap from snow drifts and dunk a basketball in the hoop we got for Christmas.

That was the only time I was able to dunk. wink

Seatlle usually struggles with any snow or ice.  Lots of hills here and people unfamiliar with winter conditions.  If there's a heavy snow, there aren't enough snow ploughs to deal with it.  Looks like we'll get some snow and sub-freezing highs this week.

Part of the 3am long range forecast discussion from the NWS.  Lots of time between now and then with 2 decent storms coming thru first, then possible snow on monday night.  FWIW, Weishaar was a classmate of mine, and he always leans heavily towards snow and thunderstorm forecasts (so rare in Western Oregon, can't blame him, lol)

<<There appears to be a precipitation lull Tue afternoon through Wed morning, but plenty of uncertainly regarding the location of the arctic boundary. The ECMWF continues to keep this boundary more north than the GFS. Models typically do not handle the arctic boundary all that well. The Wed through Thu time frame will be of most concern. The operational ECMWF and GFS show a deepening surface low near 130W 18Z Wed. The ECMWF drives this low inland Wed night, with the main surface low entering SW Oregon 06Z Thu and then swinging north overnight. The GFS keeps the surface low offshore through Thu and swings it north off the south Washington and north Oregon coast Thu afternoon. Should the ECWMF verify, there is the potential for a significant over-running frozen/freezing precip event for the north half of the forecast area. As an example, the 12Z ECMWF snowfall accumulation for KPDX shows several members with 10+ inches total between Wed morning through Thu. However, there is considerable variance among the individual ECMWF members Wed night through Thu, with several showing no obvious surface low circulation off the coast. To make matters even more confusing, the NBM indicates a 50th percentile 24-hr snowfall 12Z Wed through 12Z Thu for KPDX around 10 inches. The 90th percentile value is an astonishing 15 inches, with at least a foot extending southward to KEUG. Of course, considerable uncertainty exists beyond Mon and forecast details will change over the next few days. Weishaar >>

Yay, bring it!  Got my snow tire installation appointment this afternoon and snowshoes are ready! Stocking up on supplies, because we live at 500ft elevation in Portland.

The road to our street is a steep hill that doesn't get plowed, so I'll be working from home next week.,

The unique issue in Portland is the refreeze and/ or ice storm factor from the gorge winds -- been in too many of those and no one knows how to drive in them.

Got shoveling skillz?...

Snowpocalypse fo sure if snow in SF

Any measurable snow in the Atlanta area usually has the same crippling power here as well. Lots of trees that fall down from ice. We had a snow/ice event a few years back, I was 7 miles from home and it took me 4 hours to get to my house. I left my office at noon and slid into the driveway just before 4 pm. It was crazy. Now I just pay attention to the weather man and stay home if they say the "S" word. I laughed when I first moved here, and now I understand.

Here is what happens on the freeway when it ices or snows here.

Latest news is that there won't be much snow on the valley floor.  The mountains are getting dumped on though, which will be good to beef up this year's skimpy snow pack.

They are also getting snow up in Seattle and some of the mountain passes are closed.

The latest prediction for Eugene is that  it’ll snow tomorrow morning, ending by noon. Oh well.

'Bout a quarter inch this morning. Not currently snowing.

Where have you gone, Snow-Apocalypse?
The patient turn their lonely eyes to you.

A little flakey white stuff in Cornholio this morning
