Slow Pitch Jigging

Anyone try this Japaneses tactics?

I'm going on a 4 day adventure in the Gulf on April 14th and I have all my gear and I'm ready to fish an entire different way that what I have in the past.

Pumped for this trip, its a private charter on a 56 foot catamaran the Laura Jeanne. We have room for 1 more.

Sounds and looks great! What are the 'Japanese tactics'? Deep sea trolling? I have done that a few times 8-10 miles off Ft Lauderdale, chasing weed lines and throwing chub, etc. Caught some nice Mahi & Makerel anyway. That area between KYW and Dry Tortugas is fairly pristine. Enjoy!! Post some pics if/when convenient.

We are going 350-400 ,miles west of Tortugas to "Jurassic Park" for monster grouper snapper and tilefish.

The rods are ultra thin and super strong, The lures are metal and flutter like a wounded bait fish, It is bounced off the bottom up to 30 feet or so off and flutter back down Even if the fish are not eating the traditional bait and hook the reaction bite is on. The reel fits in the palm of my hand and has #30 pound 8 stand braid. It is the diameter of a human hair. When fish is hooked the tip of the rod stays in the water till the fish is up a couple of hundred feet then you can slightly give a 1 foot pump and reel. The 2 speed reel has a 7 foot per crank return ratio.

This outfit can and will handle fish over 500#

The Japaneses have been doing this for many years because of over fishing.

Been going on in the states for 4-5 years.

Here is a link to the jigs we will be using.

Nice/Enjoy!! Thanks

Good luck Tim and make sure to post pictures of your monster catch.   Sounds like a blast.  Are you going to dose on the boat?

I have a couple of those jigs in my tackle box, but have not been in deep enough water to use them. We did find a wreck a few miles off the coast and used live bait last time out, I will have to remember to try these next time out there but still it was only 50 ft. deep. The gulf is pretty shallow until you get way out. Good Luck

I haven't done the slow pitch jigging in deep water yet but will be trying it when the situation presents itself. If I had to pick one type of lure/tackle and nothing else, it would be for jigging and all sorts of jigs. Pretty much anything that can be caught can be caught with the right jigging presentation. When I lived by the beach and had visitors, I would walk with them to the beach with a rod and a selection of jigs and soft plastics and say we were going to catch a fresh seafood dinner. There wasn't, and still hasn't been a time when dinner came home with me.

Jig.jpgNo, Dosing on a boat with no escape might be a lil rough even for me. The only drus I will be doing on this trip will be coffee and adrenaline.

Jigg.jpgGoing out Friday to drop a few on our overfished reefs here and see how they work.

My wife said she hasn't seen me this pumped in a long time. I am maintaining an erection for 35% of my day now.

Thought this thread might be about a softball league for Irish high-stepping dancers.

Agree with Tony jigs and swim baits are my go to artificial baits and I like using Gulp swim baits.

Wind is blowing solid till Wednesday, We leave on Thursday evening and winds will be settling down with the full moon Saturday. Pink Moon.

Dolphin, snapper, and maybe bluefish?

Nice haul there.

Get cookin!

Boatload of fish.  Good work.

Top pic is a 120 lb Amberjack AKA Reef Donkey

out of season

Took everything and I do mean everything Ted and I had to get her up. We had to tag team her. I almost went overboard at one time.

We did not see another boat for 3 days, 2 F18 buzzed us 30 feet overhead too. Feel the heat.

Woke me up

We caught 39 species and 2 different birds. A Cuban sparrow hitched a ride for 2 days back to KW.

We have a 1000 pounds of fresh fish, and no not a bite is going to waste.

What wasn't shipped, eaten or given away to friends family neighbors employees or customers, we vacuum sealed and marked in 1-1.5 pound bags and instantly frozen. We have 380 of those.

Anyone close by and want some excellent fish well its here for ya.

Salty Times! Great haul and pics as well! Thanks.

Nice haul, when's the fish fry?

Thanks for sharing.  American sportsman fishing.  A half ton o' fish. Wow!

The only time I fished slightly similar to that was on a day boat out of  Moro Bay, Southern  California.  We were fishing with bait deep and catching rock cod ( fish stick fish) Had two or three leaders. The eyes were bulged when landed.

Tim,  I noticed in the video you posted and I  believe they were landing Grouper. Their eyes were bulging.

What's up with that? It it depth ,  and whatever existing conditions or type of fish.

Curious.

P.s. enjoy that Dolphin.  Damn fine eating.

Beside everything else about this amazing fishing trip, I love that you and Ted did it together.

High, Judit.

Hi, Jazfish. heart

around here, slow-pitch-jigging is a whole different sport...

Jaz

They bloat and their guts come out of the mouth and ass.

It's the bends from reeling in as fast as possible due to sharks.

If they are to be thrown back you need to vent (stab) em in the ass, mouth and under a scale in their guts. Sounds painful but it works and is the law.

> P.s. enjoy that Dolphin.  Damn fine eating.

I'm not judging here, but I am kinda surprised to hear that dolphin is on the eating list. Can someone educate me on this?

The Dolphin is not a mammal.  It's commonly know as Mahi-mahi.

Mahi-mahi is pretty good, but give me some grouper or hog fish

Dolphin is Flipper and illegal to anything

Mahi-Mahi is delicious

Tim, what was the most effective baits and technics?

japan jigging vs. live bait?

japan jig tipped with live bait?

catch the dolphin on the bottom? I caught mine close to the surface when I chartered for them

Mahi Mahi aka "Dolphin Fish". Not the best picture (and not mine either) but good fishing, good eating, and VERY colorful when pulled from the water....borderline downright tippy colors and moving colors actually, probably part of their on-board defenses.

Got it. I've heard of Mahi Mahi, of course, but didn't know it's also called a dolphin. I had Flipper on my mind.

Speaking of cool color changing, anyone experience Bioluminescence in salt water? The space coast in Florida is where I had mine, wish I was tripping

https://youtu.be/iD_6d2yN3g0

Joe, Fresh dead ballyhoo with head and tail remover on the bottom on a fish finder set up was deadly for the snapper. Dead butterflied goggle eyes were it for the grouper. The slow pitch jigging got everything, but it is for drifting over areas, Captain was more into anchoring up so at each new spot (about 30 or so) we could jig for about 3-5 minuets before it is ineffective.

The Mahi, Tuna, Kings, Barracudas, sharks and a seagull were all on the surface. When we anchored we threw full ballyhoo on the top on a wire leader for the toothy critters.

I'm still floating on cloud nine from this trip. My wife finished smoking 160 lbs of kingfish today, now bring on the fish dip!

On another trip 10 years ago we triple dosed and landed 8-30-40 pound Mahi. Gaffing and throwing on the deck. The colors, holy fuck those colors. remember it like it was this morning.

Definitely a stud AJ up there. I've caught them up to 40lbs and they fought harder than200lb class tuna. On one trip I was on a guy hooked an AJ that pulled his arm out of his shoulder socket. They are some nasty fighting fish.

Glad you had a great trip and was able to catch at least some slow pitch jigging. Maybe next time you will have more time to do so. Thanks for the photos and recap.

Bioluminescence in salt water is best seen around dusk and is liken to psychedelic tracers. Good Stuff! Sometimes, under specific and typically warmer conditions, it can also be witnessed on beaches in surf too. The wonders of nature are fortunately always all around us!

(((our flippah)))

Glad that got cleared up lololol

and, also ((Alan & Mike's ideas of this thread))

and what a cool thread for what it is really about !!!!!

Alex would love an adventure like this

nothing like being one with Nature

thanks for sharing Tim !

p.s.~>we are finally getting settled in and keeping track of the days with our nifty calendars heart

First Mr. judit used to love peeing off the side of boats into bioluminescent waters. There's adventure everywhere!

I thought this was about slowing down fiddle tunes to learn the tricky parts.

blush

smoke.jpg  1 of 3 batches of smoked King Mackerel. almost 70 pounds, The Tabasco coated is the best too. Stop by kids it's going fast.

If you end up bagging 420 fest and going to Billy Strings instead next weekend, bring some up.   We can break out the grill.

Hmmmmmmm smoked mackerel! One of my all time favorites, I like smoked bluefish too. Both are oily stronger fish that hold up well to the process.

Where do I stop by at?

Dominica Terr in Stuart Florida

The fish dip will be done soon too

It's about a 17 hour drive, leaving now................
