....this thing being FREE seems like an April Fool's joke too.

I wonder if it's free if you meet a certain level of donation to the Rex Foundation?

Free with a constant fundy phone#/website/QR code crawl is my guess.

OR maybe no phone number, these days.

DSO and offshoot Reckoning getting all the stage time. Stu gets a good dose as well Thurs & Sun.

STUDSO FEST 2022.

Who is playing with Phil? Who are the "Friends"?

Did not matter before, but might check out the stream.

Stu, Grahame, Jason Crosby, and Molo.

Screen Shot 2022-04-02 at 7.57.08 AM.png

On the fans.live page for real.  Suggested donation $5.00 min. -$25.00 (not sure if daily or for the whole shabang)  I'm in!

"Be in the Stream!"

Feels like a different slogan might be appropriate.  But maybe my mind is in the gutter.

"Stu, Grahame, Jason Crosby, and Molo."

Solid friends, and this line up played together a number of times at the Beach Park. I would not be surprised if we also see some "special guests" on the stage.

Looking forward to streaming as much as I can

In the classroom, on the couch or even at the show -- you and your kids can practice your arithmetic with the Number Counting Poster Set made especially for this year's festival season.
It can also be used for "Guess How Many Wook Jellybeans are in the Jar" sorta games. Fun for the entire family. Just $29.95 at your local Target store.

original-7845621-1.jpg

If you order now, you even get a Poster Set for practicing the alphabet!  Paraphernalia not included.

original-7743232-1.jpg

Here are the updated odds on number of times played this weekend:

China/Rider - 11

Friend of the Devil - 9

Sugaree - 8

Cassidy - 7

I'll probably tune in on the drive out to Santa Barbara to see Billy Strings.

Tatters I think that's a conservative number.

Watching now. Great free footage.

Those ladies can play awful fine!

Vocals are way too high in the mix. I'm not finding this very listenable.

Sounds good to me Bs

Viva Ventura!

Looks like a long weekend!

Man it's hard to stay up late for these West coast shows. Lemme know what I missed.

We should have a telethon to find a cure for Hulkamania.

Yore stream may be cool enough for you're friends but you better get back to from where your from, Bud!

That's an impressive urine stream from young Mr. Weir. Kinda sad to think it probably just dribbles out of him now, and slowly.

the curse of Kfufu's  splash-back onto Weir's Birkenstocks...

He appears to be surprisingly well hydrated for the desert

I thought that was about the size of him

At least Steely Dead is mixing it up so far this weekend. Hope to hear other songs along the way.

This well done so far, they are smart to stream this for free. I’m right up the road with show launched to big outdoor tv. It does look like a fun scene there, I played there- 9am electric set- at the first one and it was a ramshackle event. Props for propping it up. Anyone tell if this is in the arena or outer grounds?

It's the Arena bro. Was there for all shows from 82-87,

Nice. I played in a parking lot, opened with Bucket (per Sunday 1985) and all the tired campers cruised in.

Dark star people sounding nice

FYI you guys are listening to Phil Lesh's G&L L2000 bass and Garcia's D-28 Martin guitars playing these tunes onstage rn. Stage played Grateful Dead instruments. Unsure about the other axe there.

Wow. I was noticing the markings on the D28, that things been played. Now I know by who.

Can anyone tell me what the Stu opener was all about?

Lots of fun music today.

Early bands set the bar pretty high.

I caught 2 Cumberlands and 2 China Riders.

>>> Can anyone tell me what the Stu opener was all about?

Treeflo, I assume you're referring to the Blues for Allah suite that was the opening "song" of Stu Allen & Mars Hotel's 2-hour set.

If so, the only thing I can attribute it to is the fact that the festival's designated "theme" for Day 1 was "Egyptian Nights."

Here's more info on this from the Skull & Roses website:

GD HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS: We will celebrate the Legendary GRATEFUL DEAD Holiday Runs, and Channel the ‘78 Egypt Shows, with DAILY THEMED PARADES and Great Fanfare. Attendees are encouraged to Dress and Be Festive according to the following themes:
EGYPTIAN NIGHTS: Thursday 4/7 – Music: 2:00PM to Midnight
CHINESE NEW YEAR: Friday 4/8 – Music: 11:30 AM to Midnight
NEW YEAR’S EVE: Saturday 4/9 – Music: 11:00AM to Midnight
MARDI GRAS: Sunday 4/10 – Music:NOON – 8:00PM

https://skullandroses.com/general-information/

Thx Gary.

I was thinking the Egyptian nights would go the Egypt 78 route. Not really familiar with Blue for Allah, went right over my head.

Score card from Day 1: 2 Cumberlands 2 China Riders 2 Birdsongs (plus a tease from SteelyDead) 2 Big Boss Mans

Richard ... I like the stats sheet approach to documenting song totals. I really would love to see it after the event is over. What song will be played by the most acts? Looks like a great time had on day one... my wife is reporting in to me with all that is positive and fun! I'll be at Billy Strings all weekend and going to pop in for a few hours Sunday afternoon at S&R.

Is anyone keeping track of teases?

I came down the coast for Billy Strings  it git last night early enough to stream Stu's set which was enjoyable.

Thanks Mike for today's stream address.

The openers, The Noodles, frickin' brought it!

China Cats have me dancin' right now.  Forgot about the feel-good power of dancing to some groovy live grateful dead catalog.  Much love to you all.

The attempted closed captions on the yootoobses are very entertaining.

> China Cats have me dancin' right now.

I finally got a chance to tune in, and these guys are killing it.

These guys may have the dumbest name, but they're the best band on this bill.

saw a couple people on the rail that I recognized... Doug Clifton, and my friend Larry from Humboldt

Yay JGe!! Howdy y'all...

^^^ a somewhat rare Canyon sighting... miss ya around these parts!

Nice To See Jackie Greene playing up the Road from me

Hey Now Mr.Fish, its been a minute or two. Looking forward to DSO i haven't seen em since Martin and Donna Jean sat in at the GAMH 04? maybe??, funny how time just keeps slipping by...enjoying this Jackie set...

it's been a minute or 2 to both of you ^^^^^^

perfect time of evening for this Set !!

Ripping ......

Jackie Greene and cohorts. Danceable. Fun.

Thanx Jackie for some original music

I really like when they show the audience reaction than the band.

I see LLTD is front row

Power outage onsite. Called for the night.

I streamed last of DSO abs I got in last night. Thought it was weird that they used pigpen's vocal track on Good Lovin'. Holographs must be right around the corner!

I guess they'll have to start digging out some of Jerry's old t-shirts for some more on-stage fakeness....as if we need more.

DSO didn't play pigpen vocal track while they played. I watched it. That was Barraco

It was must certainly not Barraco, the Rob's sang the backing tracks. That was Pig!s lead vocals lifted from the E72 multi-track.

If so that's creepy and gross

I think it was Barraco but whatever

Todays stream

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwPjFhbv6Xg

Official word from the stage is "lol" no vocal samples.

carry on.

Yeah I saw it. No way a sample. It came straight out of Barraco's mouth. Someone needs to change their strain,

Barraco is just that good!

These early in the day bands are a hoot. Every city has a Jerry guy and a Bob guy apparently

From DSO on Facebook:

Head to our profile for our archived sets - livestreamed thanks to FANS - Be in the Stream.

It sounds like anyone who wants to investigate it, can.

Relix still has YT video up too. Here's the start of the Good Lovin': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AJ7wT8mCjo&t=35647s

Very clearly Rob doing his best Pigpen live

Xtra Ticket slayin' it with Wolf on the loose!!!  Hide your pets!

On further investigation... here's the start of the Good Lovin' rap: https://youtu.be/7AJ7wT8mCjo?t=35950

Looks like Rob is reading from an iPad, so probably working from a transcription of the rap from the original show

These guys rock. Slaying a Vince song.

Abear playing the "dark wolf" here, built by John Reuter

the Bobby guy ( sorry don't know his name) is playing weir's walnut modulus blackknife

D00D279A-FA96-423F-AB36-F691C27C57D0.jpeg

That's super cool that they let these instruments still sing on with the next generation.

And love this band playing later day songs. Not your typical GD cover band. And they play them swell!

Someone needs to change their strain,

apparently I do LOLOL

Marcus Rezak, playing with "Shred is Dead" right now, is also playing in Corvallis OR next thursday with "Truth in Sound", doing a Zappa tribute w/ Ike Willis...

https://www.whitesidetheatre.org/live-events.html

Nice little Metallica nod right there.

This guy is playing a Languedoc guitar (kind trey Anastasio plays) is why his tone sounds like phish.

he does not seem to know the words to terrapin station very well, so this is sort of strange

Xtra Ticket Nice Band

complete with modern-day "Take A Fuckin' Step-Back" Moment (..er Movement)

Walton in da house

Perfect Weather Here ! Ventura County RULES

What blows my mind is that anyone would confuse Barracos voice for pigpens.

does not compute

This Walton one is our fave set so far, well after JGe...Really loving the rotating stage, I'd like to see all the bands play one long continuous Dark Star 20 minutes at a time as the stage turns...

Hey Canyon and all Viva Friends!

Been enjoying the tunes.

So, did all the people move their chairs behind the soundboard?  (I had to leave for a bit).

waste band brings the heat, workin' man's jrad.

The weather in central KY has really sucked this year. Winter is not wanting to leave, holding us tight with her icy, cold, Dead fingers. Today is cold & grey, and we've had rain, sleet, snow throughout the day. So, seeing all these folks in sunshine and warm weather really makes me ready for summer.

sick, Slightly Stoopid's drummer is sitting in with Roots of Creation.  Really impressed at the dub/ska Dead.

>>>>The weather in central KY has really sucked this year.

Just spent three days in the Ville.   cold and blustery.   Happy to be home.

Not digging this band at all.   Horrible.

Also...who is fired up for Ass bites from Hell?

Lol

that wasn't them just now?

^Also...who is fired up for Ass bites from Hell?

That's Big Steve Parish's band, have no idea what to expect

The Alligators win the coolest looking band award imo. Sound pretty damn good too.

Enough is enough, where's Melvin!

Gotta admit that I'm happy to hear CATS in overtime.

Haven't seen them without Neal and I'm pleasantly surprised.

Melvin stuck on the toilet?

I hope he's ok!

He (and they) appear to be more than ok!

Woah... Melvin!!

Melvins not taking any prisoners tonight

What's up with the little finger on Melvin's left hand? It looks like it's about half as long as "normal." You can see it when they do a close-up on his keyboard.

Anybody know who the Ass Bites are, except for Big Steve and Don Was?

Big Steve is exactly the kind of music I expected from him.

As Jerry said Keep your Day Job

melvin ripped.

steve is like our mojo nixon, just terrible.

Parish gave me a blood blister once moving a bass amp, this is far more painful, lol

Turtuga analyzing

Delay

Parish prepping  to sit-in with Oteil

What's up with Craig from Cubensis?

buenos noches amigos

not sure who everybody is in Oteil's band...

Jason Crosby on keys

Pete Lavezzoli on drums (and of course Bill Walton is up there too)

maybe Scott Metzger on guitar (??), and not sure who the other guitarist is closer to Oteil

Eri Krasno is the one playing the Alligator guitar ??

nice Melvin sit-in on TWLWMYD

krasno is good, not too familiar.

It's tough to tell from the webcast but it looks like the crowd is crammed in a bit. Are they only using a portion of the fairgrounds? I recall it being quite large.

The whole inner bowl in hemmed in by vendors  which took up a lot of space. Plus looks like the stage is farther out in the bowl. Vending was outside the bowl back in the day. I you want more space go up in the stands.

Tom Guarna was on the other gitbox.  Same lineup as the Cap shows, minus the horns.  I stayed up for it, then faded early on (Dogfish Head 90 Minute a factor there).

Couldn't find it on Yootoob this AM so I'm rolling with the Miami set w/Krasno and the Kimocks.  Sliced/diced vids from S&K are turning up, so I'm sure I'll find the O&F eventually.

wow 30 mins for the headliner. what a cluster. glad i didn't suffer through the assbites and whatever intermission length...I know shit happens but damn.

>>>The Alligators win the coolest looking band award imo. Sound pretty damn good too.

I dug the alligators too although their pigpen was a little more belushi than pig.   Lead guitarist had some nice licks and I liked their teases

>>>looks like the crowd is crammed in a bit

There was a lot of space earlier in the day and looked like some folks were chilling in the bleachers.  hard to tell.

Got home from Rodney Crowell (awesome) at like 10:30 and the stream was off. What'd I miss?

@Tatters

1987 Bowl is full and no vending inside. I don't remember it ever being that full inside.

ven1987.jpg

Thanks for the link!

Who has the song stats for the weekend so far?

Where's Pete?

family medical per roger, vega from the bullpen

So great to finally see Bobby Vega!

Wishing all the best to Pete and family.  heart

Three-part harmony Bird Song in Bb.  That was pretty cool.

Way cool to see Bobby Vega, if under shitty circumstances.  Vibes for Mrs. Sears.

The T Sisters are great. And, based on the crowd I'm seeing, they may be the only ones in that entire venue with any T!

Production team chat coming through on the stream. Whoops

Not gonna lie

petals unfolding nicely here

Is it just me, or did the production crew just sing way better than Big Steve last night?

>>wow 30 mins for the headliner. what a cluster. glad i didn't suffer through the assbites and whatever intermission length...I know shit happens but damn.<<

Was over an hour waiting for Oteil last night. Painful wait. Alot of folks got cold or bored and went home. The people who stuck it out were pretty sizzling.   You'd think the band would come out blazing after that long awkward silence, but that wasn't the case. Zzzzzzzz.

Shoulda called it a day after JGB

I CANT STAND THOSE CHAMBER DUDES IN MOONALICE ! JUST HORRIBLE

THE CHAMBER BROTHERS          SUCK

I'm pretty sure that was Keller & Co doing their mic check.

QC getting a little shaky on the 4th day.  The turntable SNAFU at the Midnight North >> Moonalice handoff was kinda funny.

Damn solid set by Midnight North, BTW.  The extra firepower of Crosby and Tom Guarna didn't hurt.

They need that rotating stage for award shows when speeches go on too long

Why isn't Sless in Phil's band tonight? Stu and Grahame is a TXR (RIP) band, Sless would make it festival worthy

^And Midnight North had plenty of non-GD material (like their own songs).  Admittedly, a nice break from the "norm" of this festival.

MY EARS ARE BLEEDING FROM THAT OLD MAN !

THE CHAMBER BROTHERS    SUCK

Jackie Greene, CATS and Pink Talking Fish all contributed palate-cleansing sets, Johnny, tho' PTF did crunch a few GD nuggets.

Time.

It has come.

Today.

Hey!

This guy is so stoked right now to be playing Jerry's martin

he's just beaming

Rippin cumberland TLEO mash up right now.

Well, that explains the voices, lol...    Cumberland getting a little psychedelic

In 1969 the Grateful Dead opened for Chambers Brothers on a Sunday afternoon in Baltimore and I have never read or heard anything about it. One of those msising shows.

GD2_0.jpg

Yeah, and what was up with that last night? I tried ot stay up and they kept delaying and I only caught the first song of Melvin. Woke up this morning to only see 30 min of Oteil & Friends and I thought the replay was bad or something.

Maybe it was one of those showbiz moves that I seem to remember the Dead did to Steve Miller or someone.... just delay so you become the defacto headliner. Maybe Melvin and JK cooked up a scheme because they wanted JGB to be top dog in jamband land, now that DeadCo is out of the picture, and hipchecked Oteil (kidding).

I actually liked the Circles set best, so far.

Loved Circles Around the Sun and was glad that they played an extended set.

Who was their guitarist, BTW?

>> Who was their guitarist, BTW?

John Lee Shannon, he joined after Metzger left last year. Was a little tentative for his first few months but has really been coming into his own lately, IMO

>>>Funny

But so true

Is this really the first (public) Phil & Friends show since Halloween?

This is most enjoyable. The warp, the weft...

What's the other noise? A little chaos... it might have been another open tab on my computer?

It makes me so happy to see Phil still playing.

God bless our leader

>>> It makes me so happy to see Phil still playing. <<<

And he looks so happy!

will someone tell Molo to take his mask off his ear? He looks like a hat rack.

^ He must have heard me. The Houston Astros French foreign legion baseball hat is a much better look.

West LA is probably my least-favorite song in the Dead canon, for whatever reason, but I like where they took this one.

The video effects make me feel like I'm 16 again, sitting in my parent's basement, watching the So Far video and trying to scrape a bowl for 'resin hits.'

It's been fun seeing friends on the tube.

Looks like treblemaker will be sharing some vids in the near future.

I hope that everyone's been washing their hands before and after playing Alligator...

Ya knw what else is weird? How come no one's smoking pot in the audience? An edible-only show for covid safety or something?

DSO on Friday played Alligator perfectly. Like it was 1972 again! Sounded just like Jer

People have been puffing away all weekend Alan!

^Ok maybe I'm too focused on the headwear and I missed it. Kudos to Grahame for cultivating the naked guy on a pole white Jesus look. Phil on the other hand could use some of Bobby's shampoo. Or maybe he just came from a dip in the ocean. Carry on.

This shit sounds grate.

Definitely sounds way better than I was expecting.

Dang is it june 4th yet!!?? Thank You Phil!!

Happy smiling Phil makes me smile.

They sound so good! Play on...

heart

Phil and these friends sound great.

I hope he makes a stop upstate this summer and I can walk good by then.

Hello there, Roshambo.

Saw Stu playing Alligator on Viola & NFA, was he playing it earlier too?

He had it on Crazy Fingers also

So much for the 2 hour set time. Phil can't be stopped

Not Fade Away encore, nope

Standing on the moon encore, nope

just rip right into Uncle Johns Band at the 2:16 hour mark

(must be taking those Ponce de León pills again)

Hola!

Fun weekend of watching- many thanks to Relix streaming for free!

Want to post a few pics of all the guitars- can anyone help?

Forgot how to post them- lol

email me and I will forward

You know why this is better than "Wolf Brothers-and-a couple-more-other-Wolf-Brothers?" Cause there is a lead guitar where it's supposed to be in a Grateful Dead song. That and Phil, of course. Phil's music has some balls.

Molo and that face mask dangling is so bizarre-

would drive me bananas

think Molo so on point he just doesn't notice

On fire!

The music never stopped

<Molo and that face mask dangling is so bizarre->

Molo is a big Kloe Kardashian fan and her hanging mask fashion statement has been taking Southern California by storm lately. All the rock stars are doing it. It says "I'm conscientious, but carefree."

Having a 4 day stream of Dead Central has been the best medicine for this Covid boy. That Phil set just blew whatever virus was left in me out the door.  Bobby Weir gave me Covid and Phil Lesh cured me a week later. Go figure...

LOL!

Trailhead-Alan -you are on point:)

Thanks to Judit for posting - momentarily..

Pics from Facebook

Guitar heaven.

That was so much fun. Thanks Phil. We're still everywhere!

Phil sent it.

Lesh is more.

So glad you made it!

How weird that a couple Phil's old basses were there, but they were played exclusively by other bands.

Maybe it was like knowing a couple of your exes were at a party you were attending, but you avoided interacting with them.

Phil Lesh. Still the man.

that was sick.

love ya phil!

What were the highlights?  Had to tune out after Franklins.   Seemed very good ...maybe not mind blowing, but the above reviews may suggest otherwise.  What did I miss?

Phil and Friends current lineup is roaring.  Well rehearsed and psyched out too.

Tom G:  Still time to get flight / tix to frost.  I'll pick you up at SFO.  K

So what was the most repeated Grateful Dead song over 4 days? Someone must have the stats! i am guessing Playing in the Band, Uncle john's band or China>Rider.

Weirdest moment of the weekend might of been Lowell George's son talking about how he liked Shakedown cause of his dad's involvement.   Seemed a little forced if you asked me.

And the sheer love of fondue.   The captions for hysterical.

So...what exactly happened with Oteil?   Was his set cut short (curfew of sump'n) or just the stream?  Last thing I remember is Water in the Desert.

It's Official ~ I Am Giving John Molo All My 3 New Masks

WEIRD

I just read a post from Oteil expressing his frustration that they only got to play 30 minutes of a planned two hour set due to the worst technical difficulties he's ever encountered. That and a hard curfew cut it short.

im guessing Rob Scalcione wasn't there to keep track.

All in all a super fun event with lots of great people and music. Riding bikes on the oceanfront

path to and from the fairgrounds was epic.
