Lineup announced today

This looks like a fun dance party.

Saving the date(s)....

Might have to make a pilgrimage back to Ventura after my first show there 40 years ago.

that's a lot of uncle john's bands

Steely Dead

The Warlocks of Tokyo. Seen their videos on YT. A Japanese GD cover band.

Dates saved...

looks fun :)

warlocks of toyko are great

looks good

too bad the DNB was not rescheduled...

Looks good.  I saw 3 Dead shows there in 87 while on a business trip to LA/Oxnard and it was an eye opener as In The Dark was just out and it brought out many newbies--it was a very mellow weekend of shows and walks on the beach with Walton. One of the best venues, period

Nice to see the Assbites from Hell gettin' another shot at fame and fortune. smiley

Some stuff is already sold out! surprise

Woo hoo!

Is this a camping fest? Never been.

This is more incentive for me to stay in Cali (giving up my current place at end of NOV to housesit and spend holidays in Oregon while job hunting.... well that and today's gorgeous weather here on the peninsula.

Yes, it is a camping festival.

Many people held their tickets from 2020, so that is why some tickets are gone.

Car camping is $199 plus fees. RV $349 plus fees. You can just walk on the bridge train tracks to the beach north of yhe venue and camp for free. At least years ago it was possible. Nice and quiet beach. Maybe not so safe today?

My girlfriend and I slept on the sand for free in 1982. Had a nice conversation with an older couple who were traveling the country in their camper. Dude said it was the first time he had seen the Grateful Dead since 1972 and it was "Just like plugging back in."

That was a good time.

Holy shit what a lineup. That's a lotta dead. Like a GOTV on Jerry steroids.

Have a great time westies, can't wait for the reviews.

>One of the best venues, period

Was and will always be for me in my GD show days! Saw every Ventura show

Went back in July 2020 after 33 years and it was surrounded in fences. Lot's of construction going on. Couldn't get close. Would love to spend a day or 2 at this fest. 4 days of constant continuous  GD music is too much overload for me.

>>>>> 4 days of constant continuous  GD music is too much overload for me.

This.

Oh, come on - Jerry's Middle Finger could shake that up! wink

Yahoo. Glad I saved my tickets and will be repaid for my loyalty

There are different levels of camping... the RV / campground listed has yurts, pool, hot tub... whaaat?!!

Would love to hear Zoner intel on the options and pros/cons.

RV worked last time

Purchases  my space two years ago

Might want to read reviews about that Ventura RV Resort - sounds like a shady operation and not a great place to stay.

Just noticed prices jumped $20 a bit earlier. Now its $410 for a pass and $240 for car camping. Ouch. Furthurfest 2010 was like $130 including camping for 3 days (ok, not as many bands, but still...).

Also unclear on whether you can just walk in with a tent in 'auto camping' - there doesn't seem to be tent-only onsite, just that nasty sounding RV resort nearby.

Well, that event is certainly growing. Lots of talent on that bill.

People just have an insatiable desire for Grateful Dead music, which shouldn't surprise any of us.

A bit too much of the same thing for me, but this should be a hopping event.

I wonder, if Pink Talking Phish only plays Pink Floyd, Talking Heads & Phish songs at this event, will they be booed?

Pretty shockingly, I have found that band to be damn good, and they can also play GD music well, so I'd guess they'll assimilate here.

And as was brought up in another thread, with Phil's 82nd birthday a month before, will he fire up a band in New York, then bring it west, or will he stay near home for a birthday run, and then cruise down the coast?

I imagine Shappy will have something to say, and pay, about that.

Either way, with the word that Phil has obtained a tour bus, it's very likely there will be Phil shows in various regions in 2022.

And THAT is far out.

LLPL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LLTGD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have RV camping in the parking lot as well where I was last time

It was very convenient

The 3 hotels I checked last night are all blocked for that Sat/Sun but I did find some interesting AirBnBs within 15 minutes drive... camping on blowing dirt or sand has never appealed to me (assuming it's windy there like any other coastal area).

>>>>If Pink Talking Phish only plays Pink Floyd, Talking Heads & Phish songs at this event, will they be booed?

After days of non-stop GD music, hearing something other than GD might go over pretty well.

Yeah the promoters should have mixed it up a bit. Bring in Ziggy or DNB or ...............

Too much GD

can we complain about phil's friends yet?

^ That would be pure speculation and we likely will not know until they hit the stage anyway....but, yea, the complaints will be flowing long before that.

Wherever he goes

the people all complain

there should be a friend complaint thread coming along any time now

I wish that he would play Laguna Seca.

At least Further stopped by Monterey fairgrounds...

Looks like a great time !  Make sure to catch my friend and her band Brown Eyed Woman, the bass player Dana is a friend of mine from South jersey <3.

They are really good...

can we complain about phil's friends yet?

Be patient.  This cycle is is focused on his wife and kid.

2 nights of Phil and 2 of DSO?

My guess would be the top four listed headline one night each. Phil has overall top billing so he probably gets Saturday night.

^Agree

My guess is Melvin Thursday

O'teil Friday

DSO Saturday

Phil Sunday?

Ventura County Fairgrounds July 2020. My first time back in 33 years. Will never be the same. That's as close as I could get. Chain linked fences kept me from getting closer. They used to have a roof over the stands.

ventura2020.jpg

My buddy just said $400 to sleep in a parking lot...

I’d expect Phil closing it out on Sunday as the top bill.

DSO on Saturday, Oteil on Friday, etc.

All hail the tapers!!!

Melvin's site says he's playing on Saturday, but that may just be an approximate date. Oteil's says Apr 7-10. No DSO dates yet.

>>>>$400 to sleep in a parking lot...

That's not just any parking lot. That's where thousands of Deadheads partied, bought and sold everything under the sun, and stayed for free in the 80's. It's just oozing with history.

Is that what that stuff is?

Awesome! Now we can get scammed to camp on pavement under the guise of nostalgia! Is Shappy "involved"?

"...it's not just any old regular parking lot!"

.... and how will they monetize the ocean waves that the original heads skinny-dipped in?

(wasn't there, wish I had been there.... but would love to hear those stories!)

You can pay extra for the "Skinny Dippers Medal & Dancing Bears Lanyard" that is engraved with a sillouette of naked phreaks in waves! "On this site (public beach) in 198X, 37 Deadheads took a naked swim, much to the delight of clusters of tripping on-lookers..."

^^^^ LOL that's what I'm talking 'bout

I'd expect Phil closing it out on Sunday as the top bill.

I think Phil will headline Saturday as from what Ive heard Sunday ends at 4:00pm and is an acoustic day.

Shapiro was SO kind to me at the Philly Brooklyn Bowl opening !!  I was walking to the elevator and he and I were only 2 in hallway, I said Hello and thanks for bringing this venue to Philly ( a Lot of the local music is being booked there and so happy for them)...we chatted a bit more for a quick minute about Phil possibly coming there to play ;).

Then he reached in his back pocket and pulled out a VIP wristband...and put it on my wrist and said " There ya go, enjoy VIP tonight on me " <3.

He is kind and humble, and I look forward to many shows at the Brooklyn Bowl in Philly !

He is cool - I chatted with him at GD50 Santa Clara where he was holding court at an outdoor bar close to the stadium - but still open to poke fun at here and there too, just like all of us and everyone, right?

Feeling Good About This ! Plus I Am SURE There Will Be Surprise Sit Ins ALL Weekend Long !

Peeps There Are Places To Camp Hang Out Near The Fairgrounds FOR FREE Just gotta Poke Around

Phil WIL Be Saturday I Am Feeling

<<There Are Places To Camp Hang Out Near The Fairgrounds FOR FREE>>
From my research, that old free area is now called "Hobo Jungle" ... the small campground at the north end of ot os patrolled daily by officers. ... it's even labeled as such by Google Maps.

Cumberlyn, I think part of that is you're special and inspire kindness and space for people to show it.

I think in the world today in Cali, especially SoCal i would be cautious to camp for free, Definitely pack your shit up everyday and put it somewhere safe. It ain't 1982 anymore.

You're not paying to camp in the lot, you're paying for a lesser chance of having your stuff ripped off.

^^^

Even though it's not as bad as some want to portray things.

My buddy just said $400 to sleep in a parking lot...

That;s the RV camping rate.

$199 plus fees is the car camping rate!

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/skull-roses-2022-tickets-79492605523

>$199 plus fees is the car camping rate!

Actually, it's $220 + fees now. Prices jumped on everything a few hours after the onsale time.

Dynamic pricing?

"It ain't 1982 anymore."

Raising hand to testify that is true.

I went ahead and bought a pass for this Festival. It should be a lot of fun.

sounds fun but i've been bleeding  $$$ like no tomorrow as of late so gonna pass.

while i'd love to see phil again, the last time i ponied up to see him at the outlaw fest, the band thrown together and the performance were terrible. hope he does something interesting but...

and yes there are homeless all over. i guess you could camp with them? lol...

Thanks Slickrock, very kind of you to say <3

Because more bands = short festy sets, I'm going to wait until the schedule is out before making a decision.

Tahoe-Flower-Website_0.pngI think in the world today in Cali, especially SoCal i would be cautious to camp for free, Definitely pack your shit up everyday and put it somewhere safe. It ain't 1982 anymore. <<<

um the Fairgrounds are in the 805 area code there are many mellow areas to hang and the cops are not out to get Ya.

Smoke Bowls ~ Yew

Maybe Phil will sit in with the Warlocks of Tokyo!smiley

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNDf-Vt8lvc&t=119s

He could show up alone and form a killer band from all of the on-site choices but we'll see what reality brings.

I would almost go just to see the Warlocks of Tokyo just to see how the crowd reacts. I bet they dig a Japanese band playing GD music. I expect a huge response.

Still considering it.

Does PLF have floor space?wink

I'm thinking I'll make Saturday for sure, and maybe Friday. This will be my first time going to this festival. The last few years, there's always been things that kept me from going, but I'll make the trek this year for P&F for sure, no matter who he's playing with.

FB page says 'first' price increase at 9pm pst today (Sunday Dec 5). (Actually, it's the second. Prices jumped a few hours after initial onsale time. Shh...)

No other details. Last time it was $20 increase on everything.

Milking the ol' GD Bessie.

Others may see this differently, but I think this is a messed up way to drum up sales of four-day passes. I have no intention of buying a four-day pass, and I'm guessing there are others who see it like that too.

SINGLE-DAY PASSES may become available at showtime, though this is not guaranteed.

https://skullandroses.com/general-information/

I agree. I am also waiting for single day sales (which did happen in previous years).

This is a particularly weird year since many tickets were sold for the 2020 show that was postponed. The holdover tickets cost less than the prices now. I bought a VIP ticket on 11/12/19 for $435.52; DNB was on the bill then.  Now that's about the price of GA. I sold that ticket back when the 2020 show was postponed because I figured DNB would drop out.

F7F3EAF0-F4BF-4B3C-89B0-38991EAF2EF4.jpeg

Good to know it's not just me, Zooey. I'm guessing single day tickets will run $100-150, but the scare tactics ("may become available...this is not guaranteed") leave a bad taste in my mouth and make me wonder if it's worth the effort.

I agree with you guys and we'll see what actually plays out. I would totally be down for 1 day/night of this but we'll if/how that may come to be as well.

This is way too much money for way too much of the same thing. We would make the trip if it was rad but overall just seems oddly uninteresting.

for those who live a little closer and can day trip; I understand

Agreed, Bss. Phil is the big draw for me here, of course, and I'm guessing he'll play Friday and/or Saturday. If I could catch Phil, plus Melvin & JGB, and DSO or Cubensis, that would be a fun-filled day for me and well worth the hour and a half drive.

Phil is playing on Thursday April 7 at 7:00pm.

https://www.phillesh.net/

Thanks for the info and the link, Woz.

The link is now showing on the left side of the page under This is a PHAN SITE.

Multiple nights of Phil and Friends. That will make your ticket seem less pricey.

Seems like one and done for Phil

If so, that is an incredible bait and switch. A four day festival and the advertised headliner only plays the first night, and before the weekend proper? If it turns out that's the case, I for one will be disappointed.

Bait and Switch? The headliner typically plays one night..........the ads don't suggest anything other than Phil will play.

Thanks, Woz. I don't know that I'd call it a bait and switch, but it is a bit odd for a headliner to play the first night only. 7:00 PM seems like kind of an early start time too. Does anyone know if there's a strict 10:00 PM curfew or something?

I wouldn't count on anything being etched in stone until the official set dates & times are announced. I can't see why Phil wouldn't play Fri or Sat, unless the other headliners are already locked in to a tour schedule.

The music goes until midnight Thursday, Friday and Saturday and the 8:00pm on Sunday, it's right there on the festival website.

I suspect Phil knows when he is playing and his website has the correct date and time.

I'd wager DSO is the "headliner" on Friday and Saturday.

I thought I had read somewhere that the music runs to midnight, but that website doesn't make things easy to find.

So if Phil goes on at 7:00 PM, I'm wondering if that means one set with another band playing like from 9:00 PM to midnight?

I would expect that Phil plays two sets from 7:00 until 11:00 with a set break same as it ever was and someone will play late.

The times are on the website under more info. 2:00pm until 11:00pm. Not hard to find.

How many tickets are being sold for each day??

37

^Hilarious.

But truly what is the capacity that they will allow for this fest. I imagine they will oversell it to the max if possible and not have single day tickets until right before as they want to get as much as they can. 2 years of cancellations with their promotion costs and all have probably put them in debt. They need to overcharge this time to get back the losses.

And it wouldn't surprise me if it was cancelled again because ot the new neverending strains that are emerging.

The last time I was there for the GD in '87. It's a big area, I have no idea how they it up for this but someone must have gone in the past few years. All joking aside, I'll probably drive down from Marin for Thursday and Friday and then go to Paso Robles wine tStu g Saturday and head home Sunday.....

I'd say the place holds around 9000. It didn't even sell out the Friday show of 87. Lot's of room in the back.

Just got a reply from S&R Productions. I asked if you need a vehicle to get a camping spot, or can you just walk in with your camping gear and set up in your allotted camping/parking space (since some folks may be flying in and don't want to rent a car just to park and camp).

They said it is their understanding that you don't need a vehicle to camp, but since its a paved lot, tenting may not be ideal. They did mention that if I do choose to buy an on-site camping pass, to let them know, and they will notate the purchase - possibly to see if there's enough people doing that, they might open a tent-only camping area (astro-turf?). Pure speculation on my part, though. Maybe there will be a discount. Ha!

Headliners Announced (in an email):

Thursday 4/7: Stu Allen & Mars Hotel

Friday 4/8: Dark Star Orchestra

Saturday 4/9: Oteil & Friends and Melvin Seals & JGB

Sunday 4/10: Phil Lesh & Friends

Came in to post the same as above - and each day has a theme

What day are the Warlocks of Tokyo playing?

From the email

DAILY MUSICAL LINEUPS:
The headliners listed above are Official. Daily lineups beyond the headliners remain in flux. They will be finalized and announced in the weeks prior to the show.

Does anyone find it odd that PL&F is traveling for 1 performance?

Wonder what they're doing on Friday and Saturday?

It would be nice if they had, for example, a couple of nights booked at the LA Greek!
I suspect these fests have a do-not-compete clause in their contracts though.

Does anyone know who Phil's Friends will be for this show? That matters to me.

Sure seems like fun, and plenty of good bands, but I'm not sure if I'm going. like Turtle said... That sure is a lot of Uncle John's Bands. Made me laugh. So true.

If anything like Days Between Fest, they will plan to sell single day passes starting a few weeks before the shows. But 1st they will try to sell as many 4 day passes as possible to the FOMO crowd, and those with abundant disposable income.

I doubt Stu Allen will play with Phil, as he's got his own gig Thurs. I'm not too big on those Dawes guys, nor the Fruit Bat dude.

Best to hope for is Larry Campbell. Lebo or Scott Law could be thrown in as well.

Maybe Phil is searching Craigslist as we speak.

^LOL.

Is Jr & Family Band out on Craigslist these days?

Phil's web site still says 4/7.

Will continue hoping for more than one Phil set, but Sunday makes more sense than Thursday. Even though reversing the running order of time seems like just the sort of trick Phil could and would play.

THURSDAY 4/7:  EGYPTIAN NIGHTS
STU ALLEN & MARS HOTEL

FRIDAY 4/8:  CHINESE NEW YEAR
DARK STAR ORCHESTRA

SATURDAY 4/9:  NEW YEAR’S EVE
OTEIL & FRIENDS
MELVIN SEALS & JGB

SUNDAY 4/10:  MARDI GRAS
PHIL LESH & FRIENDS

Theme nights. Sounds interesting.

"I suspect Phil knows when he is playing ..."

I think these theme shows should be past Ventura GD shows.

good idea Doctor

Hope to Go as I am The Closest Zoner to the Fairgrounds 20 minutes away !! yes

I'm pretty old but I like the FILO filing system

don't know what a FOMO is

Figured Phil would close it out on Sunday...

I do think Stu will stick around for the Sunday set too. Just a hopeful guess...

All good stu is prob required

Grateful Dead @ Ventura Fairgrounds, July 30, 1983. Me and my old buddy Dan Nettell were sitting in the bleachers with a side view of the stage and the railroad tracks just outside the venue fence. The band opened with China Cat -> I Know You Rider, and at the EXACT MOMENT Jerry sang the "headlight on a northbound train" line, a northbound train went passed the fairgrounds with horn blazing. It was an amazing synchronicity. Of a kind that were not uncommon at Grateful Dead concerts.

I recently recalled that event to an old head who was not at the show, but had heard the story of the train going by.

https://archive.org/details/gd83-07-30.aud.dodd.11932.sbeok.shnf

Jerry was way wasted at those 83 Ventura shows.

Wasn;t there a fire burning in the hills when they did FOTM in 85. I was there but don't remember the fire.

"Jerry was way wasted at those 83 Ventura shows."

He wasn't the only one. We were smoking a lot of weed, and as I recall there were powders of perdition in wide circulation and being consumed by many.

We saw the fires glowing along the hilltops driving down 101 the night before.  They opened the 1st show with OMSN > Fire on the Mtn.  Fun weekend!

Camping is sold out

Roarshock, I believe you will need a smartphone for those tix.

In other news, they originally said single day passes would be "available in March when daily lineups are released". Now they're saying single day passes "may become available at showtime, though this is not guaranteed."

https://skullandroses.com/general-information/

They're not making this easy for folks who don't want to buy into the whole shebang.

They really want folks to "easily" and fully buy into the whole shebang, as in 4 days & nights, hook, line, and sinker.

Well, I'm holding out for the single day tickets......I'm going to hit the Santa Barbara Bowl on Saturday for Billy Strings and would like to see Phil on Sunday but if not wine tasting in paso Robles will be just fine!

"Roarshock, I believe you will need a smartphone for those tix"

I have a smartphone.

I am concerned that a smartphone is becoming a requirement for participation in society.

I hear you, man. They're great when they're working, but of course they don't always work, and some folks don't have them.

Daily lineups are anounced, and now they're saying "Single Day Passes will be available at the door".

Where's the Warlocks of Tokyo?

I wanted to go see Phil but that's a pretty weak lineup to have to drive down and buy tickets at the door for. Looks like Billy Strings in Santa Barbara on Saturday and then drive home to Marin Sunday for Los Lobos.

So who will Phil's friends be, besides spawn? Molo and Sless are on the bill with un-jammy Moonalice Sunday, so they might pull double duty. DSO have no scheduled dates until the end of May, so Barraco could be in. There's no shortage of on-hand GD-infused musicians to tap.

My guess is: Molo, Sless, Barraco, Stu, and Spawn, with a guest or two.

> My guess is: Molo, Sless, Barraco, Stu

That would do it right there, or swap out Stu for John K, who will be playing the night before.

Reckoning replaced Warlocks who have a pandemic related issue...

Now they're selling one day passes as of today. $149.95 + $16.22 Fee for Phil on Sunday (plus $15 for parking). I will not be attending.

Oh sweet....another 'Phil Premium' mystery band!! Yeah.

The 2nd to the last time I saw him was in Vegas with most of CRB backing him up was surely not good/great and he was sitting or MIA behind his stack for much of the show. The last time was very good, however, albeit with a stage power outtage that cut the set even shorter, at the Santa Rosa Canna Cup in June 2018.

I'd have a problem paying $181.17 even if it was the Q. This is a large dirt field near the beach.

No need to consider this now with the Ftody show on June 4. Had they put the single day tickets on sale a month earlier I would have bought them!

Agreed, Woz. I have no regrets for passing this one up. Plus, I picked up tix for Billy Strings in SB for Sunday too.

Yes - somewhat bad timing on the single-day S&R  tix but they were trying to wring it out for all it may be worth by funneling the 4-day passes. Lots to navigate in the pent up festival custie market. Summer Camp is sort of going 'head-to-head' with  Darkstar Jubilee over Memorial Day Weekend with some of the larger Midwestern markets in play for both/either there. I strongly suspect we'll be stumbling over show options fairly soon as things get scheduled/confirmed.

They just added more camping spots, including a tent-only area for $145.

Spoiler Alert. Black text on black screen below. Select it to see it.

I just read that DSO will be performing the show from April 8, 1972 (Wembley Empire Pool) on Friday to celebrate its 50th anniversary. That's my ATF Dark Star, and the Sugar Mag > Caution isn't too shabby either.

I had written this whole thing off, but might have to attend on Friday after all.

...that likely won't be the last lure cast either

It's tempting. Mattson is supposed to be playing Alliigator for this one too. I'm thinking it'll be a game day decision for me.

According to Relix:

Phil's friends at SKULL & ROSES will include Stu Allen, Grahame Lesh, Jason Crosby & John Molo.

^^^ yep yep, just got the email with that confirmation of the friends.

no spot taken, but cool that Molo is part of it.

I guess Baracco and Sless wouldn't take off their headbands.

^LOL!!

It can get very windy at the Fairgrounds. They need their headbands.

That line up played some fun smoking afternoons at the Beach Park.

Other sit ins would not be unlikely.
