Wow!

Got em.

Thank you Zooey.

Had a great time at this event last year.

2. GENERAL ADMISSION

^^^^^^^^^^ WHERE TO BEGIN ???????

>>> WHERE TO BEGIN<<<

Since it's a five day event and that $575 price is for all five days, the first day would probably be a good way to begin.

And all those acts and they still need a house band?

That's gonna' be a lot of Friend of the Devils.

Wow. First time I am tempted.  What a great lineup. Who is playing with Phil, I wonder.

And will they sell single day tix for this? << Never mind. Not even announcing schedule until 7 days prior to the shows. WTF?

It's how they suck people in for a five day ticket!

And it's how they alienate people who don't want a five day ticket. I ended up seeing Billy Strings in Santa Barbara the same weekend last year because of S&R's sales tactics. Best music decision I've made in a long time.

Think of the $600 ticket to hear all that music as a real steal

i mean

it's $400 just to sleep in your own car afterwards...

Big Steve

Again

Didn't His band have to do an extra set ( they had no additional material) last year when the revolving stage failed?

torture...

Us too

Wow, Just checked out their merch page. Campers who sign up for early morning yoga with Downward Facing Donna can order one of these for only $80.

^ and can buy one of these cool toke bags to carry all their festival gear:

Untitled70.png

Who are you ? Where are you ?

We have shit to sell you.

More interesting lineup. Can I just do 2-3?

Big Steve was extra torturous.

Great time for a toilet break.

That's a damn long bathroom break if Steve played 2 sets....

And he's billed above the Warlocks of Tokyo? I heard them the other day and thought they were pretty good; gotta be better than Parish Bites....

>>>That's a damn long bathroom break if Steve played 2 sets<<<

You have to have some time to shop for Guatemalan pants, right?

100% no brainer for me to skip this one if i cant just go one or two days and be sure of the bands im going to see. i have very very little interest in a GD cover band festival, or really any festivals in general. everything here besides phil and warlocks of tokyo is just filler for me, and tbh id probably skip it anyway if its yet another TXR style lineup. if the lineup is really really stellar and full of heavy hitting improvisors i could see myself trying to go last minute, but i highly doubt that will be the case. always frustrating to see bands id love to see come thru my area and only book a festival date. music festivals sound good on paper, but rarely compete with a normal venue show for musical quality and are rarely worth the money, especially these days with everything being so expensive. $600 for a 4 day festival is absolute absurdity, especially for a lineup this saturated with mediocre GD cover bands.

I'm not committing until they add a 24/7 drum circle or at least a sunset chakra class.

It's kind of got a foot in the door of hypothetically paying $100 to see a movie.

Or put another way:  at what point does a "cost ceiling" come into play; or, do prices continue to escalate without limit if the demand is willing to support it?

Meh.  If I was going to a festival that time of year, I'd hit New Orleans Jazz Fest.  Early Bird Weekend Passes are in the $60/day range, you get a much deeper and diverse program of music, world class food vending, and New Orleans and it's vibrant night-life to expiore.

The Grateful Dead were special.  Living in the past, not so much.

Until I can get my knee fixed, it's all moot anyway for me.

"I will not eat them in a house, I will not eat them with a mouse

I will not eat them in a box I will not eat them with a fox

I will not eat them here or there, I will not eat them anywhere

I do not like green eggs and ham I do not like them Sam I Am."

It's like Mom has made Green Eggs and Ham for 5,000 days in a row.

But hey, many can't seem to get enough GE & H.

I really had fun last year.

It's a wonderful setting. Even if one does not have memories of the ancient days with the Grateful Dead, Ventura is still a sweet spot for a long weekend party with a bunch of like-minded freaks. The music on stage provides a soundtrack, but is not necessarily the main event (except for Phil).

I bet that like last year they will sell single day tickets when festival time actually rolls along.

"id probably skip it anyway if its yet another TXR style lineup"

Have you seen many Phil shows this year? The TXR regulars all put in years at the crossroads and they know the material. I wish Jerry was up there on stage as much as anybody, but it never will be again. However, the music goes on and will continue. We are blessed.

What Roarshock said!

Until I can get my knee fixed, it's all moot anyway for me.

Good luck with that Dave, I had my right knee replaced last year and it has made a world of difference.

"Only 4-day and bonus day passes available". Because, give us your money!

I wouldn't spend any kind of big bucks on this after the JGB / Oteil debacle last year. Did they ever even apologize, let alone offer refunds?

And just who is the S&R management team anyways? Sounds like an offshoot of GDP, but there seems to be little to no accountability.

>And just who is the S&R management team anyways?,

"Only 4-day and bonus day passes available". Because, give us your money! <<<<

Oregon's leading GD cover band, Garcia Birthday Band, earned a spot on S&R's 2023 lineup, and I bet their fanbase will travel!   I've offered to help them coordinate a warm-up tour as they travel south from Portland.

S&R is on the same weekend as the 3-night Billy Strings run in St. Augustine, what to do, what to do?  ;)

I researched camping options for S&R last year and options were sparse....

LLOLLO, if folks want to camp, but not right on the beach, there's a couple of NFS campgrounds about 20 miles from the beach up by Ojai in Wheeler Gorge.

Also, I just wanted to say that I think this year's poster is really well done. The artwork reminds me of the album Skull and Roses in some ways, and has some nice Alex Grey-like touches too.

Thanks MIKE-drop!  I just found the website for Wheeler Gorge campground, so I'll pass that along.

What a rip-off!!!!

I paid $7.50 to see the real Grateful Dead!!!!!!

(I'm not into this event at all, but I say the whiners should put on their own show. Let's see how THEY do...... maaaaaaaan!!!!!!!)

.... Garcia Birthday Band is playing on Thursday, 4/20.

Good to see that Phil is playing 2 nights, at least.

Wheeler Gorge Campground: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/lpnf/recarea/?recid=11027

.... and here's a Google album w/ 3 short video clips of Garcia Birthday Band at a recent performance in Portland.
They are playing this Saturday at the Star Theater in Portland, the evening after Midnight North at same venue.

the whiners should put on their own show. Let's see how THEY do<<<<

Why is it necessary to put on a show in the first place if the circumstances inherently entail "exclusionary pricing"?

People who were there in the 80's who have ticket stubs should get half price tickets and free camping since it was free then!!

>I think this year's poster is really well done.<

Why thank you Mike. I didn't realize the guys had released the official one yet. Nice of you to notice the Alex Grey-like motif.

Untitled200.png

I'll watch parts of the webcast. Five days of Dead cover bands is a bit too much for me, but  apparently there are many who will dig it! I'm hoping Phil makes a return engagement at the Frost after the skullfuck festival.

now this is something I'd pay to see:

4day ticket/4day camping pass for Telluride Bluegrass Fest $520

"

What a rip-off!!!!

"

My friend insisted that I go. We walked up to the Winterland box office 1/2 hour before the show and each paid our $7.50. June 9, 1977.

If I had known then how much attention, time, travel, and how many fortunes would be invested searching for the sound in those special spaces with a special crew, for years and decades, I would do it again immediately and without any hesitation.

It's completely worth it modify your budget if you must

I spoke to the new operations manager two days ago adressing some questions I had it's freaking gonna kick ass just remember to pace yourself

And the new ops manager guaranteed that big Steve would be one of the earlier acts

and explain the problem why Oteil couldn't play in the stage wouldn't rotate. They're so freaking long, especially after being bored to death by big Steve.

explain some band had put in a corrupted audio file for their config, and it took him a while to figure out to delete all the files and start over

and if there's a top-notch crew running sound at the next one

better security, and no nasty nitrous mafia

No Phil

but

4day ticket/4day camping pass for Telluride Bluegrass Fest $520<<<

Yeah, no Phil is right!

I wasn't happy with $370 for a 4-day pass, but did manage to get one ... so I shouldn't complain, but last year it was $310.  I wound up eating like $75 since I unloaded my 4-day at a lower price after picking up singles for Thursday and Sunday to drive out to Boulder for D&C.

I wouldn't be surprised if supply outpaces demand this year again as it comes closer to the festival, unless they really try to stack the lineup being that it's the 50th.

>better security, and no nasty nitrous mafia<

Hope they don't run off the after show bacon wrapped hotdog vendors too.

D Flo tree flow it's been too long since I've seen you

i'll make you a hotdog

I haven't been on the zone for a long time.
I can't believe that people are still whining here all the time.

and on it goes

enjoy what you do.  Love to all

in the dead used to be three dollars or less and they don't exist anymore.
People are paying more than that for a single show of dread and  company.

Roarshock, they must have charged you more day of show! I was just a little too young to make it there but I have a few tickets from over the years.

What a crazy blip of time that place was.  (And that second set of 6/9 is, just.....I'm sure you were glad you made it).

Winterland was three dollars and it was $7.50 for New Year's Eve 1968

it's a beautiful day, Santana, Quicksilver, and the Grateful Dead

^^^ I am so bummed I never got to see It's a Beautiful Day!

Lol. They were so much fun first time I saw them they open for cream at Oakland Arena

Listening to Dogs in a Pile

jamming

I'd catch their set...

Is that LLTD whining about ticket prices?

Or Dead $ Co.??

Or something else???

Or multiple whines at the same time????

That's pro level.

Problems with rotating stages since Woodstock 1969:

"In order to speed-up the changeover the stage had a turnable platform which was separated into two parts. The idea was to use the front for playing and the back for setting up the equipment of the next band so they only had to turn the platform around. Unfortunately the equipment was too heavy for the podest so the casters broke soon and it couldn't be turned anymore. The crew had to go back to traditional set-up and tear-down."

Maybe they'll figure it out in another 50 or so years.

Holograms of bands wouldn't need rotating stages. We'll probably see that before we see a better rotating stage.

Single day tickets are available, and they're $166.17 per day ($149.95 + $16.22 Fee) for Saturday and Sunday, which is when Phil will be playing.

https://skullandroses.com/box-office/

Hard pass.

If I lived close I would do the single days, but living in the Bay Area I'll pass.

thats about my take on it too woz. if there were other bands playing that were a genuine draw for me id consider it, but outside of really wanting to see warlocks of tokyo for the cultural curiosity, traveling for GD cover bands outside of phil or JRAD is a bit much for me. do we even know the lineup? if it was a classic PLF lineup without any roots rockers or TXR regulars id reconsider skipping it.

$170 a day? I feel sorry for the average 19 year old. That could be a $400 > $500 day if you take a date and want to park, party (and eat).

I guess Grateful Dead cover band festivals are now like Davos -- a gathering of, and for, the rich elites.

Untitled77.png

the florida thing looks like more of a deal than this.

I’m with Woz. Living in the Bay, this is a pass.

>>>>^^^ I am so bummed I never got to see It's a Beautiful Day!

Atlanta Pop Fest II, summer of 70.  Afternoon slot.  Sort of low key until the opening pizzacato of "White Bird".  That got them going.

I'm just here to get clarification on the Barraco Blueberry Pie Incident.   Alan?

Ventura's only an hour from me, but I'm not really interested in a day full of cover bands as a lead up to Phil, and $170+ for a festival set by Phil doesn't sound like money well-spent to me.

four days of cover bands

or a r/t ticket to Tahiti?

same price

same same for me, Mike.

Different strokes, etc.

I also don't think standing outside to see Phriends  in a Chicago parking lot in mid-March sounds very good either though. Enjoy!

Strawbud, I thought you were kidding about Phil playing outdoors in Chicago in early-March, but then I checked the Salt Shed's website. That's fucking insane. Whose big idea was that?

The Chicago venue is inside in an old Morton's salt warehouse. Still probably not all that warm but not outdoors.

Not a very welcoming looking venue though

Looks like there could be "indoor" and/or outdoor stages/events:

https://www.saltshedchicago.com/

The website sez "The Shed will feature a state-of-the-art soundsystem by L-Acoustics, multi-level ticketing tiers to customize your Shed experience, and plentiful bars to meet your beverage-consuming needs. All of this is located within the unique A-Frame structure of the building, a renovated beauty with no shortage of history, charm, and industrial elegance." Here's the pic that accompanies that text:

But then there's other pix, like the one below, of shows taking place:

That looks like outdoors to me.

Also, "industrial elegance" is an oxymoron.

They have an indoor and an outdoor set up. Nobody is playing outdoors in March.

...down by the river.

Almost every show that is scheduled at this very new venue is already sold out...which says more about the ongoing hipster gentrification of the neighborhood than anything else.

It is what it is but it's also sorta puzzling that Phil didn't lock down some Warfield dates if he wanted to play around this birthday-ish time frame.

SOOOOOO EXCITED FOR LULU & CHITOWN PEEPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PHIL RAGES THAT CITY

<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

Chicago is clearly a way station for a couple of dates on their way east to the Cap. There is simply no way Phil is playing Chicago days before his birthday and then not playing the Cap ON his birthday when those Cap dates are still open and being held.

Expect a Cap announcement anytime now.

And there we have it.

Just announced

2023-PHIL-FRIENDS-01.jpg

Phil and Grahame and the firm are definitely digging the Trey horns trio these days. Molo and Crosby also hanging in there.

is betts jr better than goose wank?

I saw the Allman Family Reunion show at the Fillmore. Betts Jr is a very good guitarist IMO.

So now S&R is competing with Phish and Stills/Young the same weekend in SoCal, not to mention Iggy Pop as well. Good for them.

With Phil and DSO and others in tow, Skull will still do well because it’s an entirely Deadhead-centric event with an entirely Deadhead-centric audience.

If S&R makes it easier for me to get reasonably priced tix for the Stills/Young thing, I'll be happy about that.

wonder if the mini wall of sound half size could make her debut here

^^^ I'll send that idea to the Mini Wall guy on Insta if you will too, JLP -- it worked when he built it at Garcia's at the CAP in 2021... I had seeded the idea 3 months prior, hee hee.

^^^ and MiniWall guy does ship and install at private locations, so the late-breaking idea may not be an issue if the right deal were made.

So Kimock and Phil at the same festival, two days apart?

That's assuming Kimock's playing with Oteil & Friends. I don't see Jazz Is Dead on the bill. S & R Fest is listed on Kimock's website.

Would Kimock hang around and possibly sit in with other bands? Although I prefer Kimock with his own bands, he certainly knows the Dead catalog, and he's arguably the most capable guitar player on the bill. Seems a shame he wouldn't get an invite to sit in with some folks at a long weekend of Dead.

At Fayetteville last December, Zero played Morning Dew.

I wasn't really lookin' for GD covers, and I was a little disappointed for a split-second to recognize AM Dew.

That thought was soon quelled.

I wonder how many tickets they will sell.  Prices do seem stupid.

Phish and Goose the same week as Skull & Roses- having a hard time selling the S & R passes @ $150  under face. Anyone interested?

5 day passes $420 each. I have the bracelets in hand.

Passes sold.

I dont recall - did Phil take a break during his Sunday headlining set(s) last year or play straight through? Trying to calculate his appearance(s) this year, with a 3.5 hrs slot on Sat and 3 hrs on Sunday. I recently paid $50 to see Melvin's JGB (which I found worth it), Phil Tix have been clocking in somewhere around $100...so, a Sunday run out to Ventura may be in the (my) cards.

I just saw that too - thanks Mike!

Yeah thanks for pointing out the free stream Mike! I would have never noticed.

Here's Kimock with Zero, George's Majestic, Fayetteville, 12/04/22.

AM Dew and Lovelight the only GD "covers" of the 3 nights:

https://archive.org/details/zero2022-12-04/13-Morning+Dew.flac

I attended Garcia Birthday Band's "last warmup before Skull & Roses" last night and had a good dance session at Alberta Abbey.

They are playing great and vocals were especially strong.

If you are going to S&R, don't miss them on Thursday, 4/20, 1:30 p.m.

I, too, would appreciate some expounding upon Baracco's Blueberry Pie Incident.

Local legend has it that Rob (the Snake) convinced Phil (Eve) to eat some of the forbidden fruit (blueberry pie) and was punished by a vengeful god (Jill) since God had Eve on a strict no-carb diet.

He was then cast out of the garden for a time to spend his penance with the Headband tribe (lepers all).

What happened to the Warlocks of Tokyo? Am I missing something? I thought they were headliners.

You mean to tell me people would rather pay to see a raving lunatic ex-basketball player beat a cowbell on stage over a seasoned group of international professional musicians?

tried for you Alan, but I see that didn't quite work

basically they couldn't get visas

oops

@@ps

BoomBox on now, with Zion Godchaux on guitar and vocals... electronica is not really my thing, YMMV

performance schedule is at https://skullandroses.com/

Sages & Spirits are on next, with a 4-hour time slot !!

that should be an interesting collaboration... it's Melvin, John K, Rob Eaton, Rob Barraco, Jay Lane, Skip Vangelas, and Jake Wolf

>>>>Melvin, John K, Rob Eaton, Rob Barraco, Jay Lane, Skip Vangelas, and Jake Wolf

Sounds Great! Good stuff!

4-hour time slot with a one hour break?

Sages & Spirits just finished... awesome show

^^Good Stuff and maybe not merely a one-off Wednesday night headliner either:

https://sagesandspirits.com/

I'm liking Sages & Spirits. Barraco and Melvin on keys bringing a lot of depth to the music.

Enjoying XTRA TICKET yes

Did they move the stage this year to face the 'field' widthwise, instead of lengthwise? Looks like it to me.

I'm gettin' nuthin' on Fans Live.

Are they between bands?

Thanks partner!

Stu & Crew!

Why aren't the Warlocks of Tokyo on the schedule? They were advertised as playing!

Oteil & Friends are killin' it tonight.

Catching up with Oteil's set.

Good grief what a band. There's not many players better than Kimock when he's got space.

For a one-off, these guys were incredibly tight last night, and Kimock and Betts were really playing off each other well.

Last night during Oteil’s second set, the stream cut off in the middle of “Bright Side of the Road” and never came back.

Anyone know what they played after that to close the set? Because apparently it wasn’t recorded.

Not sure. It was late, and I wasn't keeping a list. Hopefully, the whole show will be up on archive.org before long.

Would be nice. I paid good money for that stream, I want a refund.

The more I hear this iteration of Phil & Friends the more I feel another classic era is upon us.

Same for DSO:  Fri night during second set, the stream cut off in the middle of “comes a Time” and never came back.

Anyone know what they played after that to close the set? Because apparently it wasn’t recorded.

DSO played the GD setlist for 10/15/1976 from Shrine Aud:

Might As Well, Mama Tried, Row Jimmy, It's All Over Now, Loser, Minglewood Blues, Bertha, Lazy Lightning-> Supplication, Sugaree, Promised Land

Eyes Of The World-> The Music Never Stopped, It Must Have Been The Roses, Samson & Delilah, He's Gone-> Drums-> The Other One-> Comes A Time-> Franklin's Tower-> Sugar Magnolia

no encore

For us, watching live, the stream was uninterrupted and complete.

I'll add, we used to have glitches and buffering, which I blamed on our inferior ATT internet.  But, since switching from chromecast to roku for our not-so-smart tvs, streaming has been solid.

I will see if the solar flares have anything to do with it?  There should be a nice show in the sky tonight if your up north.

What an amazing weekend of music. A showcase of many of the musicians that are carrying our music forward this century, and interesting to see the different combinations with some musicians in multiple settings.

Phil's band rocks. Beyond the core, the horns are such an addition at this time in history, and Duane Betts has gravitas and soul for such a young man.

I saw on another thread somebody bitching that Phil does not bring the same energy at 83 as he did at 33.

To which I reply ~ Another Picky Dead Head.

It must be grand for Phil to have co-created what has become it's own category of music and be able to witness how strong and enduring it is. That it is studied and played by so many musicians.

Phil's the direct link back to Magoo's Pizza Parlor and Jerry saying that he really needed him in his band.

I have a thrill every time I see him go out on stage and plug in.

And if the dreadful day comes when he no longer does that, I ask the critics, what are you going to complain about then?

What a long strange trip it's been.

Phil is clearly winding down, and while I am certainly thankful that he is still out there playing, I have definitely learned to temper my expectations lately and just be good with the fact that he’s hanging on. Not expecting anything more from that with Phil is probably the way to go. Grateful he’s still playing, yes. But not expecting anything earth shattering anymore.

Does anyone know why Phil's bass seemed out of tune? That really seemed to be the only issue. I can't imagine Phil's playing out of key.

I noticed the same thing, if to a lesser degree, listening to the Mission shows. Going back to 2021 at the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville, the band maybe was still learning the material, but Phil was spot on for 3 nights.

I can play a little guitar, by no means a tech or theory expert, but it seems like some kind of technical issue.

~Phil~ heart

Also, the crowd in the back at S & Rs made much better use of the flat space than folks did at BB Nashville.

My personal opinions on the Skull & Roses festival:

I love the Grateful Dead and Phil. I'll skip giving my credentials, but I've been a neurotic fan since 1993, so relatively still new. I didn't attend in person the SKull & Roses. In all honesty, I'm not really a fan of a whole festival that plays all grateful dead music. It's just too much. The groups aren't different enough in their approach to warrant it.

BUT: I did drop in and watch the free web casts for select bands and sampled the rest. I travel for work and its good to do some scouting for future bands I might see.

1. I thought Hyrider did a really good job. Also thought LatinDead was interesting, especially with JK.

2. Forgotten Space did a fantastic job-Jerry Sarancini is the man

3. Melvin & JGB played wonderfully. John Kadlecik is good at what he does. I also liked his contribution to the other groups.

4. Monitor issues aside, DSO played a great show. Honestly, '76 is my least favorite Dead era, but I especially liked their space out of the Other One in the second set.

5. David Gans: Not only do I personally dislike David Gans as a person, his music is also terrible. Why was he able to play?!

6. Big Steve Parish may have redeemed his once obnoxious behaviors & become everyones favorite stoned grandpa, but his singing in the Assbites was embarrassing. Dear God.

7. Phil Lesh: I love Phil and glad he is still playing. His playing was fine, but his sets didn't do it for me. He's allowed to pick the bandmates he wants, but basically every show he plays there's at least one bandmember if not more that I feel a sour taste for listening to them play, and I can't help but wonder why he picks them

That's the thought's I have. Enjoy the music and the rest of your week.

The hottest band that I saw during my two day Friday and Saturday experience was without a doubt Dogs In A Pile.

I bet big stages for them in the next few years. A REAL band with killer originals played around a few hot Dead songs. No iPads or music stands for these guys just pure heart and soul.  The lead guitarist is 24 and imo was the hottest guitar player at the fest. Forgotten Space.. hot set... Jerry's Middle Finger delivered the JGB with skill at all positions. This fest is a blast. Laid back fun in the California Sun. Hats off to the logistics team.

I chose to couch tour this festival, even though the fairgrounds are about an hour from my house. Tciket prices were just ridiculous I thought. That said...

• I really enjoyed Sages & Spirits. Never saw a band with two keyboardists before (Melvin and Barraco), and was very impressed.

• I thought Oteil & Friends with Kimock and Duane Betts were just stellar.

• DSO got off to a rough start, but once they got their equipment issues worked out, they really brought the X factor.

• The Alligators threw down a set of hard-driving, down-and-dirty rock and roll. They're the band that really surprised me this weekend.

• I thought Phil's shows were mostly meh. The TAB horns/vocals are sweet in their way, but I think they're mostly there to mask the core band's deficiencies. (I'm looking at you, Grahame.) Duane Betts seemed caged in for both of these shows as compared to the sets he played with Oteil.

As far as Phil, not sure why he feels the need to play 2.5-3 hrs. I would be happy with a crisp 90 minute set, he's 83.

If I'm still upright at 75, that would be great.

I watched a clip of Dogs in a Pile. They appear like good musicians, but dude-they sound like a "jam band", and gotta admit I hate jam bands. THey all basically sound like Phish derivatives. They are playing the Dark Star Jubilee, so I'll check them out live, but not a jam band fan personally

Finally catching up to the Sat night show, and I think it sounds damn fine!

~ Lots to like about this Sat night Phil. ~
