Einstein believed Passionately in God, & also that the Universe was Static & Fixed, even though all his calculations, theories, & discoveries showed otherwise (ie it's expanding, & accelerating to boot). He spent lots of time in his latter years fruitlessly searching for a "unified field theory" to link the 4 types of forces. To this day this hasn't been done. Scientists have basically "invented" dark matter & dark energy to "fill in the gaps" to explain the universe's behavior.
Oh yeah Newton spent most of his time pursuing Alchemy, not on the theories that made him famous.

This will never happen, IMO, because gravity is not like the other 3 forces - electromagnetism, strong nuclear, and weak nuclear. It's actually a warping of space caused by the mass of an object.
The gravitational force caused by dark matter is a major factor in the way galaxies are situated in space relative to each other.
