Shows on your radar

Forums:

Going to see X 40th anniversary show next week.

X, Dave Alvin & Guilty Men, Alejandro Escovedo, and Mike Watt.

now that's a good night out.

Damn.  Sure is.

We have  A Prairie Home Companion is NYC next month.  But they haven't listed the guests yet.

X, Meat Puppets, Mike Watt 12/23

King Crimson in Northfield, OH on Friday 11/24!smiley

Achilles Wheel at TXR Friday night.

Pete and Kimock at GAMH on Sat.

Not sure if I will get to either, but TXR more likely.

Nothing else on radar at this time.

Ooh I love these threads.

I was trying to work out a way to get to LA and see that X show with Alvin, Watt and those others on Wednesday, but unfortunately that will be a no-go, but I am seeing Regina Carter tomorrow night, Karl Denson in San Jose on Friday and maybe again in SF on Saturday, or maybe I'll try Louisiana Love Act with Pete Sears, Molo, Melvin Seals, Kimock and others at the Great American on Saturday instead.

Anyone have any input on Louisiana Love Act? (The band that is, not any sort of odd sex deal)

Del McCoury is in Berkeley next Sunday, which I probably won't make after going to a football game... but it is on my radar.

I am seeing a jazz trumpet player in Santa Cruz on the 27th named Jeremy Pelt who I haven't seen before.

Seeing Dylan and Mavis at the Beacon on Friday.

Celebrating my 50th in Austin the following weekend. Dave Alvin at the Continental Club on Friday,  Dead Co on Saturday.

Protip for the Hudson Valley crew

Bitchin' Bajas for me next month.

A few pickup jazz shows and contemporary improv salons between here and there.

Los Lobos on NYE

image_877.jpg

I am looking forward to this interesting run in December. Jonathan Wilson promises a number of friends, and the Moroccan Lounge is a very small venue. It should be a holiday treat.

too bad i'll miss ya lance. its at a rebranded staples center smaller theater that is actually alright. we saw negman and pfunk there.

> Sears, Molo, Melvin Seals, Kimock and others at the Great American<

well, i am partial to those musicians, so yeah...i'd hit that.

Yeah, that show & venue in LA looked cool, but I just can't get down there without major hassle, and especially at this stage of my life I'm just not a major hassle type of person, and these days because of Billy Zoom's declining health X doesn't always go full tilt shred, which for me at least is what made/makes them great.

They're still damn good though, but I'll just have to wait until the end of December to get a little X in SF, and Watt is doing his own show in a little dive in SF earlier that month and I'm looking forward to seeing that.

As for that Louisiana Love Act deal, I also like all those players but I don't know about the group and the songs they play. I love Denson and he's at the Fillmore so that's certain to be a good time, while the show with Melvin, Seals, Kimock, etc. could be sloppy, a wank fest or just dull.

I plan on deciding after seeing Denson in San Jose on Friday. If he's half as good as he was a couple of months ago at TxR I'll probably want an encore Tiny Universe show on Saturday.

The Green Leaf Rustlers just announced a NorCal mini-tour January 18 to 23, during a break in CRB’s tour schedule.  Think I will try to hit a couple of those shows...

http://folkyeah.com/

What/who are The Green Leaf Rustlers?

Chris Robinson and friends. It looks like some of the usual favorites, but it says on the venue listings in the link provided by Zooey that musicians will be announced

The photo above is from June 9, 2017 at TXR, when they performed under this name.  There is no guarantee the lineup will be the same this time around.

https://youtu.be/uZeNG8BXqQE

https://youtu.be/P1CzTV9JPsM

Ah ha. I was at that show on 6/9, but I recall it was billed as the second or third of the Chris Robinson's Hootenanny Heroes shows, each with different players.

There are a bunch of Green Leaf Rustlers shows happening, maybe this is Robinson's off-shoot of those TxR shows and he'll mix up the band each show.

Nov 22 - Thanksgiving Eve Grisman Garcia Celebration with Stu Allen, Scott Law and Sam Grisman at TXR

Dec 2. - Everyone Orchestra w Phil. Al Schnier, Grahame, Holly, Jen Hartswick, Natalie Cressman, RMFJs and Vinnie Amico at TXR

Dec. 8 - John McLaughlin & Jimmy Herring, Warfield, SF

ELO at Oracle Arena in '18

Jethro Tull at The Greek in '18

how's the mcluaghlin/herring shows..? ucla is in december...

McLaughlin/Herring show is probably the show of the year for me.

Dragon Smoke up at Crystal Bay Casino on 11/29, maybe but probably not LOS for NYE also at CBC, probably get to that Grass Valley Green Leaf Rustlers show in Jan to see what that's all about, hopefully Lettuce at the Oakland Fox in Feb.

Catching The Last Waltz this Wednesday @ the Denver Fillmore. Should be fun.

st mark i did not know you were one of the illustrious CO zoners. i will have to insist you come out and say hello next time i am in town, maybe 2018 for phish @ dicks or a spring/summer JRAD run

Set list from 6/9/17 Green Leaf Rustlers show

David Rawlings

Lukas Nelson and POTR / Nikki Lane.

Ah yes, there it is.

That would lead me to believe that band is those guys.

To be honest I don't remember being wowed by that show, my main memory being song selection, but it would be cool if they do a little tour and get into a groove.

good sleuthing, Zooey yes

>>>I plan on deciding after seeing Denson in San Jose on Friday. If he's half as good as he was a couple of months ago at TxR I'll probably want an encore Tiny Universe show on Saturday.

well, well, has gray boy lance finally seen the tiny universal light?

I've always loved the tiny universe, especially when they're getting deep in the funk, but I love the Greyboys too.

Really though, think about Denson & his universe in the confines of the Grate Room. There was some great Phil in that one as well.

It was a good show.

I've seen kdtu in a few confined spaces as well as huge ass venues, they're always kick ass.

Never with Phil though, that's just ridiculous.

but i distinctly remember u posting their overt power funk was a bit too much for your tastes in the past, lance.

regardless, I'm glad you've got wit da San Diego git down.

the power of funk compells u!

Hot Tuna Paramount Asbury Park, NJ 12/7 w/ Steve Kimock

Hitting up Hot Tuna the Next night @ The Cap !!!

Aimee Mann and Randy Newman are playing FUV's holiday thingy @ The Beacon the night before.  Chris Thile and Aimee are mutual fans, so that's a maybe.  Both she and Newman have appeared previously.

Jon Pousette-Dart acoustic fun

Elton John in my hometown

DeadCo

I'm resting up over Thanksgiving, and then...

TTB in Boston 11/30, 12/1, 12/2

Otiel in Brooklyn for sure

Chris Robinson and friends. It looks like some of the usual favorites<<<

I've had enough of CRB for a while ... and actually took a pass on getting tix early for their winter shows in Telluride.

I'm sure it'd be a decent / good show, but not for $40-50 ... just can't deal with thse "whirling tones" on keys - it's totally beat IMO - often detracting from forward movement & developing funky grooves, yet not really adding much meaningful in a "sideways" psychedelic sort of way.   NC is awesome, but just can't totally get on board with CRB ... CR's public words re: GD stuff over the past year didn't help much either.

Salmon is also returning, but hesitant with the new all acoustic format ... the main thing I liked about them has always having one foot in the door of the electric world and how it plays out with the "other leg" (loved it when Bill Payne was with them).  So, I don't have tickets for them either.

Only thing I'm ticketed for at this point is RRE in early January.

First NYE haven't traveled in 10 years and actually looking forward to the break.

stoked for tonight...but not the drive...

4.5 hour drive to Jacksonville on Friday for a show I have really been looking forward to....McLaughlin and Herring

Report back, Turtle! I'd love to hear how the show was!!

Tonight: Cabinet

Friday: JRAD

After seeing LCD soundsystem at the bill graham last week and Sam bush at the Seirra Nevada brewery the week prior I don't have many definites left on the calendar right now other than Del McCoury back at the brewery on Monday and herring/McLaughlin at the warfield in a few weeks.

Just picked up a ticket to see the residents at a winery in Sonoma in April.

fishbone in SF a couple days before Xmas, chuck prophet and the mission express the day before nye in sebastapol, and primus nye at the Oakland fox, or even nye buckethead in Sacramento r all a little tempting but long shots.

any LA peeps in for tonight?

i'm cuttin' outta here.

My son is in town from college and we are going to see Matisyahu on Friday at the Crystal Ballroom.

Just found some tix to see the long sold out Joe Biden show next Thursday night.

Also have tix for Bruce Cockburn and KDTU in January followed by two nights of Phil Lesh at the Crystal!

Then I have tix for Keller Williams and Leftover Salmon at the Revolution Hall in March.   That is my new favorite indoor venue.

On the fence and haven't got tix yet for some other shows coming up, including Lettuce, Mike Gordon, and Judas Priest.

Just grabbed tickets for The Subdudes (Bayshore) 3/31/18 & Tommy Castro & the Painkillers (Bayshore) 4/6/18.

I have been waiting for the opportunity to see both acts.  Tickets go on sale to the general public next week.

The Davey Knowles show is with "friends",  and is A Celebration of Rory Gallagher - 4/19/18, Boulton Center, Bayshore, NY.

OK, people are going into December and whatnot, so, on my radar for December...

12/02 - Everyone Orchestra with Phil, Al Schnier, Holly Bowling, TAB horns & more - TxR

12/04 - 40th Anniversary of Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers - Great American Music Hall

12/07 - Stuart Hamm-Dean Brown Trinity feat. Gergo Borlai - Kuumbwa

12/08 - John McLaughlin & Jimmy Herring - Warfield

12/09 - Phil Lesh plays the blues w/ Dickinson bros. Medeski, Musslewhite & others - TxR

12/10 - Charlie Hunter Trio w/ Silvana Estrada - Dana Street Roasting Co. Mountain View

12/16 - ROVA SAX QUARTET - The Lab SF

12/20 - Mike Watt - Bottom Of The Hill SF

12/21 - Scott Law & Ross James’ Cosmic Twang - Chapel SF

12/23 - Todd Rundgren - The Fillmore SF

12/30 - X - Regency Ballroom SF

>>>i distinctly remember u posting their overt power funk was a bit too much for your tastes in the past, lance<<<

I would be surprised if I said I had any issue with anything "funk".

I believe I was referencing a "power soul" type deal, based on a couple of shows I had seen that featured IMO too much of Karl singing non-funky, soul styled music, where the band was more backup than ripping.

Which is fine, but I love the funk.

Because I'm funky.

Going to these shows in December:

12/3  Acoustic Hot Tuna / Cohoes Music Hall

12/9  David Bromberg & Jerry Douglas / The Egg

12/28-12/30 Phish / MSG

I saw Mel C. recently, and yes, she played Spice Girl songs.

I feel weird.

Also going to:

Alex Skolnick Trio 12/21, Boulton Center Bayshore NY

JRAD - 1/14/18, Capitol Theater, Port Chester NY

>> 12/10 - Charlie Hunter Trio w/ Silvana Estrada - Dana Street Roasting Co. Mountain View

Sorry to see that Silvana Estrada was denied a visa for the December shows. It will be a more straight-up Trio show with Rob Dixon on sax. I'd be there either way, and have a pair of extras for a fun Sunday night.

DEC 8 ~ Theatre at Woodbridge H.S.

Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams / Keith Kenny

Multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell and singer-songwriter Teresa Williams' acclaimed 2015 debut, released after playing over 7 years with the Levon Helm Band and frequent guest appearances with Phil Lesh, Little Feat, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, brought to the stage the crackling creative energy of a decades long offstage union.

Their new release, Contraband Love, was produced by Larry who wanted the songwriting to be deeper, the arrangements more interesting and the performance more dynamic. Larry wanted this album to be a progression, bigger than the first album. He adds that the subject matter is darker than anything he's written.

This will be the first time the great Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams come to Music on Main Street in Woodbridge. Not to be missed! The show will be in the Theatre at Woodbridge High School at 1 Samuel Lupo Place in Woodbridge. $25 advance, $30 at door

******************************************

Keith Kenny

If the audience at a Keith Kenny show were to close their eyes for the performance they would swear that there was a full band on stage. The audience, however, is too busy dancing to the one-man acts layered guitar riffs, foot stomping percussion, blues harmonica, and emotionally charged lyrics to even think about looking away.
The New Jersey native is able to emulate the sound of a full rock band with his percussive fingerstyle approach to the acoustic guitar and an array of effects pedals. Kenny has even customized a vintage red suitcase to use as a kick drum, which has appeared with him on stage for over a decade of live performances.

About Stephane

New York Observer recently said, "Stephane Wrembel represents the living face of Gypsy jazz." Rolling Stone Magazine has called him “a revelation”.

Stephane Wrembel is best known for “Bistro Fada,” the theme song from the 2011 Woody Allen Oscar winning film, Midnight In Paris. Subsequently, Wrembel was hand-selected by award winning composer/producer Hans Zimmer to perform at the 2012 Academy Awards® as part of his “All Star Band.” Later that year, Midnight in Paris won a Grammy Award for “Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media”. Wrembel has contributed music to two other Allen films, a variety of commercials, and even helped Gentleman Shaver win a Clio Award for “Best Original Song Used in a Commercial”. He has toured around the world, and is very active on the musical scene in many countries including USA, Canada, France, Israel and India. Recently, Stephane has performed as a headliner at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York and at the Festival Django Reinhardt in France.

Wrembel has also headlined at Lincoln Center, played major festivals, recorded with mandolin legend David Grisman, toured with master violinist Mark O’Connor and shared stages with everyone from Elvis Costello to Patti Smith to The Roots. The Gitane guitar company has even named a model after him. To say that Stephane Wrembel— who learned his craft among the Gypsies at campsites in the French countryside— has already had a remarkable career would be an under-statement. This virtuoso guitarist from France has truly just begun to make his mark as one of the most original guitar voices in contemporary music.

Richie and Brad are the Electronious part of the otherwise all Acoustic Booglerizers. An accomplished finger-style Guitarist, Richard Dipaolo's songwriting has been compared to John Prine, Lyle Lovett and the Salvation Army Band. Brad Grosso plays the Electric Guitar with incredible fluidity, precision and tone, his solo's are inventive and eclectic while remaining accessible. Both from Cranford NJ, these musicians are always willing to support HomeGrownRadioNJ.org and it's great programming.

That's a killer-looking program, Lance.

Wadada Leo Smith + Henry Kaiser in a trio? Color me jealous.

I actually thought of you tonite as I caught a program of music celebrating Dizzy Gillespie and "The Birth of Latin Jazz." The Gillespie / Fuller / Chano Pozo tunes were well-played on their own, and made for a fun evening of music, but the true highlight of the evening was the post-intermission set, in which Miguel Zenon (I know you know) came out to conduct and play two of his pieces, "Second Generation Lullaby" and another tune that I'm blanking on at the moment ("Oyelo," maybe?).

That dude single-handedly ascended the capabilities of the student orchestra (composed of mostly gringos) from (almost half-heartedly) covering early (and important) afro-cuban tunes into something else entirely: painting pictures of intersectional identities in a 21st century nation, where the magnitude of their diversity (whatever diversity, any diversity) became the power that propelled them. His playing and in of itself was magnificent, brilliant, simultaneously ubiquitous and unique yet spacious and universal, but what shocked me also was his capacity to uniquely phrase a melody, and yet narrow the focus of a 20-something piece band into something almost transcendent and otherworldly.

I figure you know the cat because of the good time he put in at SFJazz (I saw that orchestra at Newport Jazz a few years ago) but I love his solo work, and it really shined in the program tonite.

Wow Ateix. I am going share with my father that his music still exists. Love it.

We have  A Prairie Home Companion is NYC next month.  But they haven't listed the guests yet.<<

My wife told me who but I forgot.

Except "Tweedy."  I don't know if that means Jeff Tweedy or the band he has with his kid.

Miguel Zenon is fucking great.

Absolutely fuckin' "A" right.

Looking forward to seeing Tim back on his feet after a tough couple years.

yeah, man, if the price is right. Gentle Spirit is quite good with some tracks a little on the mellow side.

Los Lobos ~ Daryl's House yes

I only come back to the states once every year.  This year I'll be in San Diego last week of Feb so I just scored two balcony seats to see the DSO at the House of Blues on 2/24.  I have never been there before but I am looking forward to it.  Last time I saw DSO was with Donna at the Fillmore in SFO back around 2003 or so.  Hope they still got it.

nice masonskids...I may be at that show, but the HOB is not the greatest venue...

Well I paid a lot more money than I ever thought I would to see DSO but the tickets are in the first row of the balcony and weed should be legal in Cali then so I am looking forward to it.

just don't expect to puff inside the HOB...

Why would i need to if I can stand out on the sidewalk and smoke one up before the show?

Have fun at that Henry Kaiser show tonight Lance.

It's his 60th Bday, and this one should absolutely shred.

I've avoided the second men for that very reason, turtle.

ELP on meth is right!

the good news for the birthday show is guitarist tom Watson from watt's various other projs will b there, so it'll b a watt super group of sorts.

PHIL'S Birthday  at the Cap, with My Mom

My Morning Jacket 12/29-12/31

Broomy, Colorabrah.

>>>My Morning Jacket 12/29-12/31<<<

I first became aware of My Morning Jacket on a NYE at the SF Fillmore. I had no idea who or what they were and went because it was easy, something to do and I knew quite a few friends would be there. I figured what the hell, the band will probably suck but it will still be a good NYE party.

Along with two other friends who were new to the band MMJ blew our minds that night, playing rock 'n roll in all the best ways. One of those guys now goes all over to see them, including their Mexico deals.

That should be some fun Mr. Mark. Whoop it up.

I have one more show to see this year, but damn it there are two shows on Saturday that I want to go to - X at the Regency in SF has been on my calender, but at Slim's there will be a seriously trippy "group" called Scott Amendola's Orchestra di Pazzi, which will feature a large number of brilliant, heavy improv musicians playing in various configurations and all together, including Amendola, Henry Kaiser, Fred Frith, the ROVA Sax Quartet, the brilliant drummer/percussionist Willie Winant and MANY others, and they will be going DEEP for sure.

I love X and I feel like they're coming to the end of their road so I hate to miss them, but despite the fact that Slim's sucks, especially for this type of show, that Amendola event is going to be a seriously outside mind-bender.

Damn.

Either way, any of you SF local types who profess to love improvisational, experimental music should haul yourselves over to Slim's on Saturday and gamble $20. I don't know if you'll think it's good but I can pretty much guarantee that you'll think it's weird.

GTTS!

So far... January schedule:

The Dead Reckoning 1/5

YMSB 1/16

Donna the Buffalo (maybe) 1/20

YARN 1/25

2018 will be off to a good start!!! Now if only I had a show partner lol!

X was great. First time seeing them last week. Loud and tight.

I had no idea Pat the bartender from the Double Deuce was that way onstage.

DNB NYE

Green Leaf Rustlers 1/18 Oakland

MDC 1/21 @ Blue Lamp Sacramento

Lee "Scratch" Perry 1/25 Harlow's Sacramento

Peter Rowan 1/26 Palms Playhouse Winters, CA

The Blasters 2/20 Harlow's Sacramento

Earthless 2/28 TXR

Edge of the West at Flynn's Cabaret aka Don Quixotes 1/26

No details yet, maybe opening for someone interesting?

The yearly Light of Day Winterfest festival in Montclair and Asbury Park, NJ, New York City and Philadelphia. I am especially looking forward to the Sat. 13th performance in Asbury Park of La Bamba's Big Band in Asbury Park. Last time he put the band back together it was a 30 piece group with all sorts of guest vocalists. Talk about an amazing night.

^^So it's just EotW on 1/26, hometown show now up to 20 bucks...they're flying up to Alaska next week just to play three free nights at the Sitzmark...

Brandi Carlile 4/7 @ The Beacon

I was reading over this thread and again saw FuriousE's curious comment about me not liking the "power funk" of Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. That just doesn't sound right to me, and I now recollect that I made a comment a number of years ago about not being crazy for George Clinton's heavy funk vibe. That would be a far more likely comment for me to have made, because I have no issues with Denson's funky ways and I'm not crazy about Clinton's style.

So this type of thread is fun. I'll play again for January & February...

I'll be seeing the Pacific Mambo Orchestra (a damn good local salsa band) in Oakland and/or Santa Cruz at the end of this week

I've got a ticket for a Marty Stewart all acoustic show in Berkeley on 1/14

I'm planning on seeing Flesheaters w/ Dave Alvin, John Doe, DJ Bonebreak & others in SF on 1/21

At least one or two sets of Poncho Sanchez in Oakland & Santa Cruz

The Wallace Roney Quintet in Half Moon Bay

A Love Supreme Celebration w/ Henry Kaiser, Reed Mathis, John Hanrahan, Larry Ochs feat Steve Kimock + Special Guests (TBD) at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley on 2/3

Zigaboo Modeliste at the Chapel on Fat Tuesday the 13th

A maybe for Mike Gordon in SF

A MAYbe for DSO at the Warfield, because the Warfield

A maybe for Shooter Jennings at the dumpy old Catalyst in Santa Cruz

Probably Thurston Moore & Heron Oblivion at The Chapel

I've got tickets for Robert Plant at the Oakland Fox, but I'm a bit under-enthused about that show now that Earthless is playing the same night at TxR. I had never heard of Earthless before last week and I watched an hour long youtube concert clip of them. GOOD GRIEF! I really need to see them. They're playing a night or two later at the Great American, which is cool but TxR is just so intimate. We'll see about the old Zeppelin dude.

I won't make all of those.

But I WANT to!

Justin Townes Earle on February 2nd

Also, super psyched to be flying out West to catch Peter Rowan on 4/7!!

JRAD at the Cap this weekend....

I'm tellin ya, lance, that power funk comment was in regards to a grey boy/tiny universe comparison many years ago.

s'all good though, all our tastes evolve and I was surprised to see a kdtu show on your best of list for 2017.

that musta been some hot shit!

earthless is something else though, right?

red & alias hipped me to them last year.

i think they've got a couple co bills sched with kikagaku moyo, those should b killer.

as for my radar, I don't have tix for any of these but I'm strongly considering wolf parade in Berkeley next week, lee scratch perry in sac the week after that (speaking of red & alias) and fishbone the week after that at the sweetwater the day before the trane tribute.

i also just bought a ticket for the Bowie tribute at the regency in March.

now what's this about zig on Fat Tuesday?

i've been wanting to check out his solo project for a while.

>>JRAD at the Cap this weekend....

That's too close for the radar, the show's strike is immanent.

I'm going Sunday. Say hey!

WAR is playing the Paramount in Huntington for only $25 tomorrow night.

I would like to see Phil Lesh at the Cap 3/15. But its sold out. I'll keep looking, but if I can't nail down a ticket soon,  I will go to  see the Dixie Dregs at the Paramount 3/15 instead.

That sounds very good Furious E.

Also seeing the Green Tree Rustlers (?) in Oakland on the 18th.  Venue looks cool.

Right now we are only holding tickets for Phil @ Crystal Ballroom in Portland for Feb 2 & 3 -- that's coming up soon!

Wish I could be at JRAD CAP shows this weekend.

Will likely go to Leftover Salmon @ Revolution Hall this March - see ya there Portland Ken.

Lunasa is an Irish band that plays mostly instrumental traditional and originals.

they're pretty decent live and vibe really well with Tim.

i needs to get me a ticket for at least one of them David Byrne shows that go on sale Friday.

also just found out steve Hackett is playing Berkeley at the end of February.

Never seen him but the older prog nerds have been swearing his shows r the robotic dragon's knees for years.
