Senator Chuck Schumer Appears with LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, Co-Sponsors ‘Save Our Stages’ Act
According to Variety, this past Tuesday, New York Senator Chuck Schumer appeared alongside LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right club to endorse and raise awareness for the $10 billion Save Our Stages Act.
The bipartisan bill, authored by Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Republican Sen. John Cornyn, seeks to aid independent live music venues which have been hit hard by COVID-19 closures.
“We’re here today because all of us believe that independent venues are vital,” Schumer reportedly said. “But due to COVID, there’s no revenue coming into these places. Independent venues were among the very first [businesses] to close during the pandemic and will be among the last to reopen — so we have to make sure they get federal funding. I am here to tell these people that I am fully behind this [bill], and I will use whatever muscle I have to get this passed.”
In a recent chat with Relix, Tipitina’s co-owner/Galactic bassist Robert Mercurio echoed these sentiments, saying, “We were one of the first businesses to close and, most likely, we’re going to be one of the last able to open. And then—even once we can open— when are we going to be able to make a profit? The margins were already really slim when we were at full capacity and people wanted to be together.”

IMO, every person frequenting
IMO, every person frequenting this board, or any other music board, should be bumping everything about #saveourstages they can. Legislative relief bills, fund raising live streams, buying of venue merch to show support...all of it. If we don't all band together there will not be anything like a music scene left when this is over. Conservatively estimates say over 80% of independent venues are within 90 days of closing for good. The figure is probably closer to the low 90's.
