Sammy Hagar

Forums:

Saw the Red Rocker last night with pals Michael Anthony, Vic Johnson, and Jason Bonham.   Hope I will be having as much fun and have that much energy when I am 75-years-old:

Sammy busted out all his solo, Montrose, and Hagar era VH hits with one Zeppelin cover.   Not a hint of pretense and although the music wasn't particularly sophisticated, it was fun with everyone dancing and singing along to every song.  Hard, sweet, and sticky rock n roll party and you could tell they were just having a blast playing for the crowd with zero shits given.   Show was undersold so, even though we had lawn tickets, we are able to work our way down to the 20th row.   Sammy was pitching his tequila throughout the show and even handed a bottle into the crowd to pass around (guess the high alcohol content makes it sanitary).   One of the best parts of the show was when Sammy left the stage and Michael Anthony led the trio into a kicking version of the VH classic "Ain't talking about love."  Mikey killed it and sang it better than DLR.

George Thorogood and the Destroyers opened.  Never seen them before but it was also just a party band with raunchy sounding guitar over Bo Diddley beats that often would veer into almost punk rock territory:

Good to hear ken!

Sammy does way too much cheesy commercial shit (although the excess of it all is sort of part of his brand) but he is the real deal and his bands always kick serious ass and never ever mail it in

And in my opinion it's really not until one hears mike in this kind of capacity that you recognize how totally necessary his harmony and backing vocals were to the real core VH "sound"

I had forgotten that he was Ronnie Montrose' lead singer.

He and Bobby are neighbors or live very close to each other. Bobby should go to his nutritionist.

>>>I had forgotten that he was Ronnie Montrose' lead singer<<<

Good grief. That's like saying I forgot that Robert Plant was Led Zeppelin's lead singer.

And Sammy still rocks. One of the best shows I ever saw was Sammy at Winterland in early '78.

He was great then, and considering all the years, Sammy still ROCKS!!!!!

Is that Michael Shrieve on drums?

Yes, that's Michael Shrieve.

>>>>He and Bobby are neighbors

Yep.  They ride mountain bikes together and Bobby is known to frequent Cabo Wabo and drink tequila with the Red Rocker.   Guess he is friends with Mickey too.   Funny that Sammy Hagar is part of the Grateful Dead's extended social network and has even jammed with them on occasion.

Sammy has a story in his book about partying with Bobby at the Sweetwater and then they went up to the Red Rocker's house to break into Bob's big jar of nugz.   After a long night, Bob leaves but as he is backing up, he manages to go off a cliff, leaving the car dangling dangerously.  Bobby was able to somehow safely extricate himself and the jar and walk back to his house, but left the car there dangling off the cliff for days until Sammy finally had to call a tow truck and have it removed.

^Apparently he and Jerry were buddies too. I recall reading something in the 90's about them living in the same condo development or very close-by each other and would "jam on the porch". I think it may have been in one of the Rolling Stone pieces on Garcia back then? Throw in Dave Scholls and it's a regular old country club party up there! LOL

Didn't he jam with Jerry at Sweetwater the same night Elvis Costello was there?

^^^^Apparently so:
