Saint Stephen!

Forums:

Q. Why did the Grateful Dead choose St. Stephen?

A. Because he was the first saint to get stoned!

I read that Bear made some L in Orinda near St Stephen's church.

Garcia's funeral.

That's a good story.

My understanding is that Robert Hunter wrote the song when he was down in Mexico after reading about Stephen Gaskin. I believe Hunter mailed the poem to Jerry, he was surprised to see that Jerry wrote music to the jingle right way.

St. Stephen was an analogy to Stephen Gaskin (RIP).

That would be eulogy, I assume.

Hunter has denied it's about Gaskin.

And the tune was written in 67 or 68; S. Gaskin passed in 2014.

No that is analogy. Hunter said that he wrote the poem in Mexico in the sixties to me this night.

Warm water bonging?

Seeing the guy who yells "Saint Stephen!!!" in the GD movie was freaking great on the big screen tonight.

Oh well. I guess it's none specific. No can get royalty checks, not even a Saint (and definitely not Gaskin)

Let there be bong hits for all.

I'm in.

Owsley was busted in Orinda and to get to his house you took the St. Stephen exit off Hwy. 24. Thus the song's title.

Still one of my favorite performances...

Grateful Dead - Saint Stephen - Live/Dead

They didn't.  Robert Hunter did.

SiriusXM aired a D&C version of St Stephen
