A sad day that marks end of a great era

Forums:

Long rumored, now apparently a reality.

No more Bridge Benefit shows.

Poop.

(I blame Daryl Hannah)

These shows were extremely unique and in many ways were a throwback to a time that maybe existed more in myth that reality, but for 30 years there was a weekend in late October at Shoreline that was no myth.

I saw every single show, and every one was great in it's own way/s. The emotion and and Phil says, the generosity of spirit was palpable everywhere in & around the venue at every show. For 30 straight years there really was nothing else like it.

I'll miss so many things about those weekends.

Oh well, great is great for however long it lasts, and it's always great to be able to be around it.

On it goes.

why stop it?

what a bummer

These were acoustic shows at Shoreline?

Were they loud?

I saw many over 30 years.

My very favorite was #2 - which went against the routine of the schedule and venue.

It was at Oakland Coliseum, instead of Shoreline - and it was not in October.

This event occured on December 4, 1988 (my 24th Bday.)

The cast was Neil Young, Bill Idol, Tracy Chapman, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, CSNY & Jerry Garcia-Bob Weir and Rob Wasserman.

In a classic case of having over-indulged - I got wiped out by too large a dose of psilly-psybin - but my pals escorted me to a seat -
10th row dead center and I crawled out of my miasma with the Harmonica strains of Neil playing Wang Dang Doodle with Jerry, Bob and Rob.

Last years run (the final run) was pretty epic too!
Neil w Promise of the Real, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, My Morning Jacket, Roger Waters and more.
I shot a bunch of vids from 101J including the first time Roger Waters ever played with Neil Young :
Forever Young:

And a fantastic version of Don't Be Denied with Norah Jones Band joined by Neil:

This event was an annual Bay Area Treat that surpassed most other annual events (that weren't free - hint hint).

A totally worthy cause.

RIP

They were loud enough Knotesau. You never really wanted to be on the lawn for those 8+ hour events (you never want to be on the lawn for ANY event at Shoreline) but even up there that sense of something more than just another show that I talked about made it acceptable.

Here's a prediction...

Sooner than later Another Planet will revive the event in one form or another. They've always wanted the shows in their hands and that company was created by and is owned & operated by two of Bill Graham's closest associates so they have that type of outside-the-box vision. I'm betting a dollar that they're having meetings about it right now, if they haven't been looking at it already.

Eddie Vedder said a number of years ago that he would be willing to take on the lead role whenever Neil stepped down, so the big name figurehead is there, but in so many ways that event is a complex monster to put together, and that could be a main reason why it's stopping. But that is just the type of challenge APE looks for and isn't afraid of. We'll see.

Hopefully that's more than just wishful thinking, but if the event is truly done than 30 years is a nice round number, it had a great run and I feel extremely lucky to have been around it from the start.

Here's a good idea folks... buy the 25th Anniversary DVD/CD. The money goes to a good cause, and my ugly mug is in there for a few cameo moments in the Backstage at The Bridge portion.

My bits don't help the video any, but the money does go to a good cause.

I was at the show at the Coliseum in 1988, too - I remember parts of it quite fondly.

Me too. I attended 20 of the 30.....wish I hit them all LOL!

>>>I saw every single show

Speaks for it's self. Huge compliment.

If I cleaned Daryl Hannah's pool, I'd totally check for mermaids.
