Roofing Shingles. Help construction folks.

Forums:

Looking at getting the roof replaced. Stripping all three or so layers off, and replacing the wood, too. House built in '31. Been here since fall '83, first roof replacement.

Salt Lake - snow, rain, heat and wind. Going with a ridge vent, not the boxes.

Looking at getting Owens Corning Duration shingles. Got an OC approved guy with the best bid so far and I'm pretty confident his install will be quality.

They're calling it a 50 year shingle but I think that's kinda like selling a 12 year car battery. But they're supposed to be thicker and better than the 30 year. Current roof is on at least 34 years.

OC had some issues a few years back (2006?) on quality. I've also heard bad things about Certainteed. Everyone knows those review sites can be manipulated.

Anyone with experience in the field or having a recent purchase care to share some thoughts or advice?

I've heard picking the right installer is almost more important than the shingles. This guy has a ton of good Angie's List reviews.

If I replace any roof material in the future,  my choice would be metal roof rather than shingles.  More costly,  but more sturdy.

My shack has 90's - era shingles and plywood, starting to fail now.  Poor joinery around chimneys;  leaks are mild but will worsen.

Barns were re-shingled early-mid 2000's and they did something not quite right.  Some moisture coming into structures during heavy rains.

Metal roof is the most foolproof,  from what I've seen.  Expensive,  but adds to resale value of the structure.

I just put on a standing seam mental roof, and I'm thrilled.

You might want to check prices. Metal was actually cheaper than asphalt. Plus, the metal can go over up to three layers of shingles. I had only one, so I didn't have to pay to strip off the old shit and pay the dumpster fees. To put it in perspective, the quote for the standing seam and stripping off the old roof was $20,000. The standing seam alone was $7,700.

If you have a lot of peaks and valleys on the roof, the standing seam costs go up - it's just more time and labor. Mine has only a few funky areas and they were easy to navigate. The majority of the roof was up in 1.5 days. My neighbors have a Victorian style with all sorts of funky rooflines. The same company is doing their roof, and it's about $17,000.

I just put on a new roof.  I used Owens Corning shingles with 2 layers of ice guard.

 (((mental roof)))

I just constructed and roofed a new pressure tank shed, using recycled asphalt tiles.

I'm bushed. smiley

This guy I'm looking at going with (50 year shingles) quoted $6,700 cause he volunteered a $1,250 Angie's list discount we didn't ask for. Other bid was $7,900 for 30 year Certainteed.

More coming.

I'll have to look into metal. But we get hail here quite often and I wonder what that would look like after.

Also looking at solar for the south side. My electric bills are small but it's the right thing to do and incentives and subsidies still exist.

Thanks for the suggestions thus far. Much appreciated.

I replaced my roof with shingles in 2005 all by myself. Took me 6 days and I over tarred everything. Job was done right.

Total cost of all materials, trash removal, replacement of 50% plywood and permits was $2350.00

When I finished I swore to my wife I would NEVER do that shit again.

This guy sends seven people, one day finish.
