Roger Waters Two Suns in the Sunset

"Wow! How fucking good is that?"

 Thanks, fishcane!

At past concerts Roger Waters has displayed a huge inflatable pig descending from the rafters and emblazoned with the Star of David, and dollar signs with images of Nazi swastikas projected on background screens. Waters’ actions are reduced to the lowest common denominator — a purveyor of hatred and bigotry.

“For some reason, it's become very important to Roger to tell artists where to perform. There's so many countries with histories of abuse and slavery, but he's very focused on Israel. To me, he comes off like an anti-Semite."  - Howard Stern, Rolling Stone

Judging by his remarks, Roger Waters has absorbed classic anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, and these have now seeped into the totality of his views.  His comments about Jews and Israel have gotten progressively worse over time. It started with anti-Israel invective, and has now morphed into conspiratorial anti-Semitism.

An op-ed in the Vatican newspaper spoke about  “unrestrained anti-Semitism” at avmusic festival in Belgium where Waters displayed the inflatable balloon.   Did they also have the right to draw the Star of David on the back of a pig and not be reported?” the article asked. “We continue to talk about the respect for every religion and every human being, yet we keep falling into these shameful situations.”

It appears  as tho you are judging by more than his remarks

Telling the truth about what's going on right in front of your face don't make you an anti-semite. It makes you an educator.

Hey, sometime's the truth ain't pretty, and Roger tends to dish out Truth in the most uncomfortable of ways to get your attention. But truth it is nonetheless. Love Roger Waters, he is Pink.

btw - did you notice israel renaming a settlement in the stolen Golan Heights after der furher ?

Roger's totally right -  Fuck Israel,  fuck benji.

It’s funny how that works isn’t it..,

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has issued an open letter to Roger Waters.

Dear Mr. Waters,

Your recent statements about Israel and advocacy for BDS have garnered significant condemnation, with some going as far as to label you an anti-Semite. This is not the first time you have encountered such allegations.

Over the past few years, you have incorporated Jewish imagery into your concert performances, painting a Star of David on your famous floating pig alongside other symbols, including a dollar sign and the sickle and hammer. You repeatedly rejected accusations of a malicious subtext to the use of the Star of David, assuring fans that you were in no way equating Jews with money or communism. We took you at your word, and defended your actions as artistic expression void of anti-Semitic intent.

In recent months, however, your relentless attacks against Israel and calls for a boycott of the Jewish State have caused us to reexamine your attitude towards Jews.

In your July 25th letter to your “Colleagues in Rock and Roll” you offered full-throated unambiguous support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, writing that their goal is “to bring international attention to these Israeli polices [of ‘occupation of the West Bank and violations of international law and Palestinian human rights’] and hopefully, to help bring them to an end,” and imploring other musicians to join you in refusing to perform in Israel.

Important details are omitted from your letter, which is a classic propaganda technique.  Why didn’t you point out that one of the stated objectives of the BDS movement, promoting a complete right of return for all Palestinians classified as refugees and the creation of a bi-national state, would result in the end of the Jewish character of the State of Israel and destroy Jewish national self-determination? Your writing also makes no mention of Palestinian terrorism, nor does it provide any context to the complex nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Hamas, a terrorist organization which continues to advocate for Israel’s destruction, is entirely absent from your letter.

You accuse the Israeli government of committing ethnic cleansing by physically evicting non-Jewish families from East Jerusalem to make way for Jewish occupants, yet provide zero evidence for this frivolous claim. You argue that Israel is akin to Apartheid South Africa, despite the complete and equal rights enjoyed by Arab citizens of Israel.

Most disturbing of all is your decision to single out Israel for a boycott, while ignoring real human rights abusing countries around the world.

Where is your voice calling for a boycott of China for their persecution of Buddhists, or the persecution of Muslims by Buddhists in Myanmar? Why not Russia for its ongoing suppression of government opposition figures, and recent enactment of homophobic legislation? Not only have you never called for boycotts of those countries, you actually played concerts in both China and Russia during the past few years. You also seemed to have no qualms about performing earlier this month in Istanbul, despite Turkey’s questionable human rights record in dealing with its Kurdish population, as well as the previous month’s brutal government crackdown on protesters at Taksim Park.

By the way, Freedom House’s country index ranks both China and Russia as “not free” and Turkey as “partly free.” Israel, by contrast, is ranked as “free.”

Your single-minded obsession with trying to convince others to boycott the Jewish state, while ignoring the world’s true human rights violators, must be driven by something other than a guilty conscience. Taking all this into account, one must conclude that your views on Israel are in fact colored by offensive and dangerous undercurrents of anti-Jewish sentiment.

If you were truly interested in leading an honest human rights campaign, you could start by speaking out against policies of the above-mentioned countries, as well as many others that commit actual crimes against their citizens. And if you wanted to sincerely address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, you could express your support for a two-state solution, and encourage your fellow musicians to embrace the notion of Israel living in peace and security with a Palestinian state.  How about encouraging your fellow musicians to perform in both Tel Aviv and Ramallah, a gesture that would demonstrate the unifying force of music?

Mr. Waters, having many Jewish friends and relatives does not give legitimacy to your hostile campaign against the Jewish State, and while painting a Star of David on your pig may have been free of anti-Semitic intent, your strong animosity towards Israel is indeed riddled with it.

I hope you can recognize the flawed nature of your anti-Israel campaign, and use your artistic voice to more positively and constructively promote peace and tolerance across the Middle East and around the world.

I’m sorry I thought you were judging him by his remarks

> I’m sorry I thought you were judging him by his remarks

For a period of time in 2010, Waters’ shows featured video of an array of symbols that placed the Jewish Star of David next to dollar signs.

Waters defended himself, writing  on his website that “there are no hidden meanings in the order or juxtaposition of these symbols.”

that letter basically just sounds like the ADL saying "if you criticize the policies or isreal of judiasm in any way we will label you an anti semite"

lol

fuck that, and fuck isreal, nationalist terrorist ethnostate

30 years without writing anything decent.

30 years rehashing the same old tired trite sentiments

30 years trying to scream about how important he is while doing nothing of real significance.

Who gives a shit about Roger Waters? I refuse to shell out the 100s of dollars he demands to go watch him play the same songs that rode him to glory 30, 40 years ago, without a shred of originality or innovation. Say what you want about Gilmour but at least he continued to put out semi-decent work continually until like 15, 20 years ago.

Is Israel a shitty, human rights violating, genocide inflecting terrorist state that wants to obliterate the Palestinian people? Yes, clearly. Does pointing that out make you an anti-semite? No.

Is Roger Waters clearly biased in some way which makes him want to harp on this topic and ignore many others around the world while playing countries like China and Russia? Clearly. The guy's a whiny man child bitch who has spent 40 years bitching and moaning about how he was treated and now bitching and moaning about his pet peeve hate project.

Are suckers still born one a minute who are willing to shell out 300 dollars to watch Waters hash out the same tired oh-my-daddy-died-in-the-war schtick as before? You bet your ass they are...And as long as that keeps happening Waters can continue to spout whatever weird and twisted message he wants to. Jesus, I never in my life saw a person as in need of a reality check as this guy...

Daylight, did you read the whole thing? They make some good points. Like how can you go around saying you won't play Israel to draw attention to their human rights violations, and yet play concerts in China?

He shouldn’t be playing the us either...

Like how can you go around saying you won't play Israel to draw attention to their human rights violations, and yet play concerts in China?

that is a good point. although if we are going to be totally honest, if you are going to not play certain countries because of their human rights records, your tour would consist of a handful of scananavian nations, maybe canada, and a bunch of obscure islands nobody has ever heard of. touring in the USA would be off the table no doubt. the USA's response to 9/11 was just as bad if not worse than china's current crimes against muslims.

id venture to guess that taking the side of the palestianians is so ingrained into modern left wing wester politics that it results in the kind of cognitive bias that comes with the isreal/china dichotomy you described above...i have a pretty hard time believing that a guy who's lived the kind of life roger waters has is just sitting at home secretly hating the jews.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Like you say, if you're going to take a stand on human rights by not playing certain countries, then your country list would definitely be very limited. So maybe he should just shut the fuck up about politics and be a musician? Is there any kind of line on that? I guess as an artist you're allowed to do whatever the fuck you want, and people are allowed to call out your hypocrisy. But like I said, as long as there's dancing 300-dollar-heads out in the audience, then who's to stop him?

He isn’t but that’s what we are being told we have to believe.

Pink Floyd was better without roger anyways.

Fish, he isn't what? Boycotting Isreal as a stand agains the treatment of Palestinian people? If that's now what Waters is doing then he has some 'splainin to do, cause me and a lot of other people are confused.

Mice, really? Momentary Lapse of Reason stuff? Pulse? Ugh. Not in my book....

Really. Way more sedative and psychedelic. I don’t really care for clanging metal noises and screaming in my floaty space.

Team dave.

YMMV.

“just sitting at home secretly hating the jews.”

Also, Not taking a stand on every atrocity ever committed in human history doesn’t make one an advocate for them

>>>30 years without writing anything decent.

Amused to Death was pretty good, but that came out 28 years ago.   His live shows also have some great visuals.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son Yair wants minorities to be banned from Tel Aviv, reported the Jerusalem post.

Yair Netanyahu made the comments on Twitter after Palestinian residents of Yafa held protests over the weekend due to the Israel’s plan to build a homeless centre on what used to be the Islamic Al-Isaaf Cemetery.

In response, Yair wrote: “The riots prove that there is no chance for coexistence in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, and all the minorities must leave the city.”

This is not the first time that 28-year-old Netanyahu – who lives with his parents at the official Prime Minister’s residence – has made controversial statements online.

Earlier this year, he had called for the return of a “free, democratic and Christian” Europe, in an online rant. While last year he came under criticised after publishing several tweets denying the existence of Palestine because there is no “P” in the Arabic language.

In 2018, he was banned by Facebook after making genocidal anti-Muslim statements, and in September last year he accused the former US envoy to Israel of wanting to destroy the “Jewish state”. Three months later he called for all British diplomats to be kicked out of Israel for referring to Palestinians as “occupied”, and only two weeks ago he expressed hopes for all elderly left-wing voters in Israel to be killed by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Society had a crime problem. It hired cops to attack crime. Now society has a cop problem.”

< 30 years trying to scream about how blah blah blah

Dammmmmm, I didn't realize you've been here 30 years javs. Time flies almost as fast as your bullshit.

Like you say, if you're going to take a stand on human rights by not playing certain countries, then your country list would definitely be very limited.

i think in some ways there is an argument to be made that the almost universal support isreal gets from western governments is a good reason to be more public and outspoken about your opposition to their human rights violations than in the case of somewhere like china - everyone agrees china's human rights violations are bad, but there are many prominent western politicians that support things like annexing golan heights and other manifestations of ethnic cleansing perpetrated by isreal...although that does not address the human rights violations of the west itself...but unless waters wants to come up to the farm and live with me on the hill, detach from society and go off grid, its pretty hard for someone who lives in the west to boycott the west.

Agree 100% ^^

June 25, 2020

After speaking with Palestinian and Jewish colleagues and friends, I’ve come to understand that some remarks I made during a recent TV interview, about Palestinians suffering under decades of Israeli military occupation and apartheid, have caused some deep offense. Naturally, this is the last thing I would ever want to do, particularly within a justice movement which I care about so passionately.

During the Interview, in expressing my total solidarity with and support for the Palestinian people, when referring to Sheldon Adelson’s support for the racist policies of both Trump and Netanyahu, I used words that evoked metaphorical imagery which, my friends said, were “harmful to Jewish people and to the movement for Palestinian rights” – and for this, I’m very sorry.

At the time, I had no idea that I was evoking an antisemitic trope. I regret any harm or hurt my use of words caused Jewish people, and also any ways it may have reinforced damaging lies about Jews. Nothing could have been further from my intentions. I have only respect and compassion for my Jewish brothers and sisters in our collective struggle for a more just and peaceful world.

The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement for Palestinian freedom, justice and equality, which I strongly support, calls for full and equal human rights for everyone and rejects all forms of racism, including antisemitism. Obviously, I completely agree that in this Palestinian-led movement that is peacefully resisting Israel’s racist system of apartheid and military occupation, there is no room for any racism against any community.

So let me be totally clear, I have no doubt that Trump, Mike Pompeo, and the entire US government, with their extremist right-wing agenda, would support Israeli apartheid with or without the campaign backing of Mr. Adelson.

On another matter, I suggested during the interview that Israeli Police working with US Police forces had introduced to this country the knee/carotid artery choking technique that was used in the murder of George Floyd. Two things. First, I was wrong about that. A friend I called for guidance on this, who is an acknowledged expert on the police exchange programs and connections between American and Israeli state violence, agreed that Israel’s militarizing influence on the U.S. and around the world is a grave and concerning fact. He also confirmed that law enforcement exchange programs with Israel facilitate the sharing of racist practices and repressive technologies that enhance and normalize mass surveillance, criminalization, racial profiling, and the violent repression of communities. But, he told me that Israel does not train US police in tactics, like those used to kill George Floyd. They don’t have to.

As we all know, the USA — a country built on the genocide of millions of Indigenous people, on the enslavement of millions of Africans and on the systemic racism which has persisted since the end of slavery — is clearly not waiting for Israel to teach it how to kill Black and Brown people. American police have been murdering Black people with impunity since the first slave patrols.

The current Black-led uprisings across the United States are a demand for real justice, for reparations, and for ending the brutal state violence and systemic racism against Black people that date back to this country’s founding.

So, second: To my friends in the Movement for Black Lives, I apologize unreservedly for my slip. I fully support the Black led uprising against the systemic racism endemic across America, against the murderous functioning of the Police, and the whole broken and deeply racist justice/penal system. The words “except as a punishment for crime” should be excised from the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Those words are a license to a white supremacist system to perpetuate forms of slavery forever.

I have tried in my way to stand firm in support of, not just the Palestinian cause, but many other struggles for justice around the world. I shall continue to use my voice in our common fight for human rights, and I commit to trying to improve my awareness and sensitivity to strengthen my solidarity in pursuit of freedom from oppression and racism, and for justice and equality for all beings, everywhere.

Love,
R

And there you have it. Guess you all gotta go back to hating him for something else

And by you all, I clearly don’t mean all of u lol

glad he's shinning light on how seriously FUCKED UP their policies are.

yes, POLICIES.

Waters claims he is in "no way" equating Jews with money.

Except that he uses and justifies using tropes that R anti-Semitic.

R U also glad he's a proponent of anti-Semitism?

Does that inspire U 2 help support him?

That’s the kool aid the other side would have you drinking and clearly your eyes are closed and  mouth is open

I look at RW using the star of David on the pig to represent the funnel flow of Jewish group as well as US Gov't money to Israel which is used to not just land grab, but force an almost apartheid like oppression on the Palestinian people.

That's not where I want my tax dollars going. Fer Christ's sake someone's gotta point this shit out - Roger's the man

>  I had no idea that I was evoking an antisemitic trope.

So first he evokes anti-Semitic tropes but claims he had no idea.

Then he claims that Israeli cops taught American cops how to use knee/carotid artery choking techniques.
Then he apologizes.

How could anyone possibly think that Roger is antisemitic?
Plus now he's teaching us how to rewrite constitutional law.
What a swell guy.

I agree, he is a swell guy.

So it's ok to b an antisemite if it's for a good cause.

1_30.jpg

Well you’ve demonstrated  through your above copy/ paste that he isn’t an anti Semite so thought we had that out of the way.

Palestinian lives don't matter to NycDave.

Living in an alternate universe must be fun.

Perhaps U R just a lost soul living in a fish bowl.

Back on planet earth, using anti-Semitic tropes is anti-Semitic.

I’ve said things in my past that once I learned connotations or further educated myself  chose not to say again. Doesn’t make me a racist. He couldn’t have been more clear. You are towing the narrative line, try actually thinking and growing instead you may be surprised by what you can learn.

 Islamaphobe

Between 1948 and 1967, the Jordanians and other Arab countries hosting Arab refugees from Palestine/Israel silenced any expression of Palestinian identity and occupied their lands until the war of 1967. The formal annexation of the West Bank by Jordan in 1950, and the subsequent granting of its Palestinian residents Jordanian citizenship, further stunted the growth of a Palestinian national identity by integrating them into Jordanian society. Another irony in modern politics: the Palestinians in truth are blood brothers or cousins of the modern Israelis — they are all descendants of Abraham and Ishmael, so to speak.

IMHO neither Palestinian or Israeli leaders have acted in ways that are in the best interests of their people.  Hopefully one day that will change. Ain't no time to hate.

Plenty of time to judge tho...
