He''s more connected to the GD than you might think. He consulted for the post-Jerry-died "what-are-we-going-to-do-now-cause-we're-kinda-sick-of-each-other" Grateful Dead. Check the Joel Selvin FTW book for details. Interesting.
I'm not a Selvin fan either, but I reread his book during covid social isolation and it had a few interesting tidbits that I'd forgot. Biz stuff about digitizing the vault, not the gossip stuff. I'll pull it off the shelf and see what it says again. (And when the Pink section was the only way for a civilian to consistently get Dead related news, I read his column every week) But the tone was Roger was well respected in some camps for his business acumen. And today he supports a whole artistic ecosystem. His guys have health insurance.
Now I'm talking non-musical stuff -- musically, got three word for ya: early Flying Other Brothers. Ouch.
Fact: Roger is a good guy and a financial genius and a generous philanthropist supporting worthy causes. His wife, used to play in his band and is equally smart and generous.
Opinions about their music abilities and appreciation of their musical contributions vary.
One might consider separating the art from the artists to give an honest opinion about their musicianship and band. Or not.
Yes, it's great that they pay some incredibly talented musicians to join them on stage and give them health benefits etc
Yay for them. And yay for those who enjoy the music.
That being said, I am not a fan of Roger's musical contributions. And the band improved for a time when his wife left the band, the current full MoonAlice ensemble is not music to my ears. YMMV
Just googled him. Read his bio. Seems like rich guy buys band. But he's probably a good person. as some people have said here. I might do the same if I was rich.
He obviously likes to play music so why not some of the best musicians. I would love to play with Sless, Molo and Sears too. And I'm sure they need the money.
I enjoyed their set from Lockn with Jorma a few years back. I also always enjoy seeing him on the news when he consults. He usually makes good points and brings a unique perspective

Personally, I would never "check" with Joel Selvin for anything factual.
But that's just me.
And are we really talking about "good" Moonalice as apposed to not so good Moonalice?
That's like saying there's shit on my shoe, or there's A LOT of shit on my damned shoe!
YMMV.

Don't get me wrong, I have full overall respect for Roger McNamee.
Just not his musical ability or his "band".
Selvin?
He's a mediocrity at best, and has often been worse.
I guess that makes him a solid citizen in main stream media, but IMO his reporting is really not worthy of generating any factual opinions.
Dude's a slacker, with a major ego.
