I'm not a Selvin fan either, but I reread his book during covid social isolation and it had a few interesting tidbits that I'd forgot. Biz stuff about digitizing the vault, not the gossip stuff. I'll pull it off the shelf and see what it says again. (And when the Pink section was the only way for a civilian to consistently get Dead related news, I read his column every week) But the tone was Roger was well respected in some camps for his business acumen. And today he supports a whole artistic ecosystem. His guys have health insurance.
Now I'm talking non-musical stuff -- musically, got three word for ya: early Flying Other Brothers. Ouch.
Fact: Roger is a good guy and a financial genius and a generous philanthropist supporting worthy causes. His wife, used to play in his band and is equally smart and generous.
Opinions about their music abilities and appreciation of their musical contributions vary.
One might consider separating the art from the artists to give an honest opinion about their musicianship and band. Or not.
Yes, it's great that they pay some incredibly talented musicians to join them on stage and give them health benefits etc

That being said, I am not a fan of Roger's musical contributions. And the band improved for a time when his wife left the band, the current full MoonAlice ensemble is not music to my ears. YMMV

He obviously likes to play music so why not some of the best musicians. I would love to play with Sless, Molo and Sears too. And I'm sure they need the money.
