RIP Walter Lure (The Heartbreakers, The Waldos)

Forums:

Just found out that Walter Lure died today of cancer. His work with Johnny Thunders (he was the last of The Heartbreakers), The Ramones, Richard Hell and his own band, The Waldos. Great guy and a major part of the New York punk scene.

RIP

R.I.P.

Walter was an interesting guy.  He also was a successful Wall Street stockbroker.

Richard Hell, the Heartbreakers original bassist and a founding member is still alive.  Hell, Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan debuted the band on May 30, 1975, with Walter joining them on July 4, 1975.

Herbal Dave ~ You are correct that Richard Hell is still alive. While Hell was an original Heartbreaker he left rather early and was not a part of L.A.M.F. lineup, so I tend to discount him because of that. That was the lineup I was referring to and should have been more clear. It's a bummer to have all these guys who were a major part of my sonic landscape pass on. Although Lure didn't perform often, I would always see him at least twice a year ether as part of a Johnny Thunders memorial performance or with The Waldos. It was one of those things that I thought would always be and now it's not.

I saw this show. It was pretty good. I enjoyed them, and Walter was happy.

Rest in peace

I spun Blank Generation and Heartbreakers live at Max's yesterday. I think I'll keep that vibe going today.

I got to see The Heartbreakers once because my friend was kind enough to drag me to see them when they reunited at The Ukrainian Home on Second Ave in NYC on September 24, 1982.

It was just a couple of months after I moved to New York City after I graduated from college. I saw myself as a young punk rocker back then - lol - and The Heartbreakers were f**king Legendary! That night, Walter and Johnny Thunders were most excellent and fun. Also by then Ty Styx had replaced Jerry Nolan on drums, but with Billy Rath on bass - WOW! I never saw a show like that ever again. Walter's rockin' up in Heaven with Johnny again...

The Ukrainian Home on Second Ave

That's as much of a punk bona fide as it can get.
