RIP Rusty Staub

Forums:

Last thing I heard on the radio before I left the house.  Slipped my mind until now.

A class act.  Smoked a good rack o' ribs, too.

Had his autograph as a kid.  On the back of a restaurant (not his) check.

As always, F Cancer.

With a name like that it is a wonder that viagra never picked him as a spokesperson

I remember sitting in a bar on 3rd Avenue one afternoon back in the 80s watching the Mets on TV. It was late in the game, perhaps even extra innings, and somehow the Mets were forced to have Rusty play the field after pinch hitting. This being late in Rusty's career, he was not very swift on his feet. What they did was switch Rusty from right field to left field, depending on which side the batter hit from. Well, Rusty is in left field, shaded towards center when the batter hits a fly ball down the left field line. Rusty took off after the ball, giving it his all. The announcer, Ralph Kiner, I believe, said, "Rusty chugs and chugs and...he catches it!". That is what came to mind when I read about Rusty's death, "Rusty chugs and chugs."

Much love for Rusty. He was a mensch.

only player in mlb history to have 500 hits w/ 4 different teams
