RIP Roy Hargrove

Forums:

A phenomenal trumpet player gone far too early at age 49.

Aw.

Haven't heard a great deal of his work.

But I drove him from midtown to Rudy Van Gelder's once, back in my cabbie days.  I don't know if he was recording that day, or showing some young 'uns (3 kids about 13-14) Rudy's studio.

I'm so sad about this. I love trumpet in jazz and Hargrove was my favorite trumpet player, and IMO he was one of the all-time greats.

His style was so smooth and flowing, so creative and trippy, and his compositions were traditional but original and could go deep; he was truly brilliant.

I can't say I'm very surprised by this. I didn't know he had health issues but I knew he had substance issues, at times obvious ones when I'd see him, and a friend of mine who used to run a jazz club knew him and told me some stories.

But I was always excited to see him, I saw him any chance I could and I always knew I was in the deep end of the pool when I did.

A huge loss.

Wow. Bummer. Did not know he was so young.

RIP Roy

Had the good fortune to see Roy Hardgrove at the Bluenote in August of '16.  Swell shoe.
