But, in all seriousness, I used to have fun their as a kid. They were in my town to close out the whole thing for good and my sister and niece were in attendance. I didn't realize they traveled city to city via train.
A 146 year run comes to an end. They were around longer than Major League Baseball. The great American Roadshow and the original bohemian caravan. Wasn't it Jerry who once described the allure of following the Grateful Dead as akin to running away to join the circus?
My folks took me to see the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus at Nassau Coliseum back in 1972 when I was a seven year old. It was a nice completion of the circle to see the GD there in 1985 and again in 1993. Some of the lyrics to Hell In A Bucket ("maybe you should consider the circus, because it just might be your kind of zoo" and "with your chair, and your whip, and your hat") and When Push Comes To Shove ("there there may be tigers to bite you in the ear") were fitting. As a kid, it was my first introduction to the big show.
I know animal rights activist are pleased, but I know that seeing the elephants and big cats up close fueled my young imagination to want to learn more about these wondrous animals and how to ensure their proper care and save them from extinction. Now, most kids won't get as many opportunities to see these creatures up close, and that link may be lost, especially if the modern zoo follows the way of the circus into oblivion.
My folks took me there waaaay back. i really liked it but did not know of the alleged poor animal treatment. All I remember is the acrobats and this light up yoyoy think my parents bought me. It was trippy. They should hang a banner that says "So long Suckers"
Went when I was kid and was most impressed by the guys on motorcycles whipping around upside down in a big round cage and a troop of Chinese acrobats who would slither into what was probably an 8" pipe and then completely turn themselves around. Still one of the wackiest things I have ever seen.
We took our granddaughter last month, she didn't care for the show and kept accidently touching this old guy in front of us who was not taking it well, lol. Really its time to stick a fork in this show, parts of it were good, most of it was lame. It was like Lame Circus on Ice with a space theme. We went a few years ago and it was much better.
The last-ever Ringling Bros. show will be broadcast LIVE on YouTube, in its entirety, on Sunday, May 21 at 7:00 pm ET/4:00 pm PT. Tune in and watch with the world as The Greatest Show On Earth takes its final bow!
