Fortunate enough as well, Blaise. What can be said? The upsetter. He was a real originator. Coxsone dodd, the black ark, burning sounds, Trojan records. Lee Perry's handprints are many, all over the foundation of reggae music. He almost seemed to float when he walked, and lived a full and busy life. Real royalty.

Even if Lennon wasn’t on his side, he needn’t worry, as the voice of reason, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, was in his corner helping Macca’s fight for justice. The Jamaican dub pioneer had always been a firm believer in the power of the plant, so he did what he thought was right and wrote to Tokyo’s Minister of Justice — which you can read in its beautiful entirety below.

Such an original legend in his own times; infectious, smooth, he just beamed on stage... Back in 2008ish picked up tix for The Wailers at Napa Uptown Theater. I get back to my car and look at the tickets and see in really small print: Opener: Lee Scratch Perry
JAH WTF!??
The Upsetter of course cruised onto stage to blow the minds of the few of us who were there for the real part of the show. Yes, he crushed it (complete with telephone ringing or baby crying amidst many other sonic gems) and absolutely stole the show and the entire night. His last song the hipsters started to file-in en masse for the Wailers. The talent difference was so jarring we left the Wailers show early, having our minds properly blown prior.
