love ya and miss ya SO MUCH Jerry... RIP

Robert Hunter's 1995 eulogy to Jerry Garcia as read at Jerry's funeral:

Jerry, my friend,
you've done it again,
even in your silence
the familiar pressure
comes to bear, demanding
I pull words from the air
with only this morning
and part of the afternoon
to compose an ode worthy
of one so particular
about every turn of phrase,
demanding it hit home
in a thousand ways
before making it his own,
and this I can't do alone.
Now that the singer is gone,
where shall I go for the song?

Without your melody and taste
to lend an attitude of grace
a lyric is an orphan thing,
a hive with neither honey's taste
nor power to truly sting.

What choice have I but to dare and
call your muse who thought to rest
out of the thin blue air
that out of the field of shared time,
a line or two might chance to shine --

As ever when we called,
in hope if not in words,
the muse descends.

How should she desert us now?
Scars of battle on her brow,
bedraggled feathers on her wings,
and yet she sings, she sings!

May she bear thee to thy rest,
the ancient bower of flowers
beyond the solitude of days,
the tyranny of hours--
the wreath of shining laurel lie
upon your shaggy head
bestowing power to play the lyre
to legions of the dead

If some part of that music
is heard in deepest dream,
or on some breeze of Summer
a snatch of golden theme,
we'll know you live inside us
with love that never parts
our good old Jack O'Diamonds
become the King of Hearts.

I feel your silent laughter
at sentiments so bold
that dare to step across the line
to tell what must be told,
so I'll just say I love you,
which I never said before
and let it go at that old friend
the rest you may ignore.

Woke up to rainy, misty, morning...the skys are STILL cryin, jerr...and, once again, thanks for sharing your  music with all of us

Outstanding work , Noodler!

Man, can't believe it's been 23 years. Thanks for all the great times & wonderful music Jerry. Miss ya.

Excellent work Noodler.

My first and last times seeing Jerry;

UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, the night before they closed Winterland,  December 30, 1978

https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1978/12/30

And Autzen Stadium in Eugene,  June 19, 1994

https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1994/06/19

Kind of intense to think the last song I saw him perform was "Knocking on Heaven's Door"

First...new haven 81...last giants stadium 95...lucy in the sky....and a whole lotta days between....

Just when you think you've seen every photo of the guy... again- nice work there, Noodler.

Your {3:13 VLZ time} and my {5;43 VLZ time} photos of Bill Graham and Jerry are from the same time & place,  noting the old A/C unit in the old window and same shirts.

I wonder if that's 710 or Airplane house.  Maybe Bill's office space at one of his venues ??  A guitar case in transit,  more industrial window rather than Homey...

Somewhere in SF judging by the haircuts & furniture.

Thanks for the voluminous Jerry photos.

So glad for the tunes. So glad he was born. So glad I got to enjoy his art. Thanks JG.

thx noodles for the pics

>>>last giants stadium 95...lucy in the sky...

My last as well (first was Spectrum 4/5/82). My friends went to Albany & RFK. After that Giants Stadium show, I'm sad to say, I had no desire to go to any more shows on that tour. Never thought that would happen.

Same here, chuck...i blv they were playin Giants again the next night...i cant recall it perfectly clear now, but, looking back, we didnt have tickets for next night, and it was in the summer of endless radio ads asking ppl without tix to stay home...now, im not saying we wouldnt have gone without tix by any means, but i do remember alot of my friends talking of this topic etc...and i do remember the atmosphere post show....we had just seen an "ok" 90 s show...ya know the ones, go in w no expectation, hoping to catch jerry on a good night (that was pretty much what it seemed to be like for 2-3 yrs at this point), hoping you d catch a good set list, and knowing if there was a Sugares, A Deal, an Althea, etc early, youd hopefully get a good one, and just basically pray for a non disasterous show etc...and i know, for mysdlf, i felt pretty good after that show..i was thrilled i had seen a lucy in the sky, even if that too was just "ok", adding to my dead beatles "seen" list...;)

But, the whole tour, the whole summer, and that night for sure, i remember, just had a differant vibe...so, i cant say looking back now that i knew it was my last show, but, for awhile we had been at the point where we sure werent gonna see them more than a cplx a spring-summer-fall etc...i was done doing 6 Bostons>12 msg s , etc...and we knew they were, too...it was kinda sad when ya think about it now, that we ALL kinda knew it was over, or soon would be...unfortunatly, i, and id bet almost all of us had visions of seeing JGB for years to come....

Noodler, you've had a busy night! Many of those pics are new to me. Thanks!

RIP Jerry. You were present for some of the most memorable times of my life. heart

Sunshine Garcia Becker & Barry Zito just performed the National Anthem on Jerry Garcia Tribute Night at Giants Stadium!

This Jambase article just popped up on my phone with a nice tribute to Jerry. It features videos of him sitting in with various bands, most of which I’ve seen before (Hornsby, Santana, Los Lobos & Steve Winwood). But the others are videos of shows I’ve seen pictures of but not video. Sweetwater with Elvis Costello and other guests & the Soviet American Peace Walk Concert from 1989 in Golden Gate Park with Jerry sitting in with Zero. Fun stuff!

What a good run GaryFish!  Your first and last were both definitely keepers.

^^^ indeed, Jacko

I just watched the 2 Hornsby videos in that jambase.com link posted above by Chuck511... fun to see the interaction between Jerry and Bruce... added bonus is numerous views of a young John Molo driving the beat in his inimitable high-energy and expressive style!

I love the video of Jerry sitting in w Zero. This is the first footage of Jerry & Kimock playing on the same stage I have ever seen.
