He was scheduled to play in San Francisco next month as part of the African jazz group Jazz Epistles that he formed in the late '50s with Abdullah Ibrahim, but I noticed the other day that he had been replaced on the bill by Wadada Leo Smith. Now I know why.
I saw Masekela once in the late '80s at the Berkeley Greek, a show that also featured sets by John McLaughlin & Miles Davis. I must say I was underwhelmed with his performance that night so I never saw him again, but he was clearly a legendary player in the jazz world.

I don't remember seeing him there, but surely could have. There's a lot I don't remember from that weekend and I missed some people.
