RIP Hugh Masekela

Real bummer. Had tix to see him in Feb before he canceled due to illness.

Saw him in '91 at Eel River with Third World. Amazing performer.

Damn, I didn't know that he was still alive.

Rest in Peace, Hugh.

Judit, did you see him at the Monterey Pop Festival?

grazin one of my favorite tunes from 68

He was scheduled to play in San Francisco next month as part of the African jazz group Jazz Epistles that he formed in the late '50s with Abdullah Ibrahim, but I noticed the other day that he had been replaced on the bill by Wadada Leo Smith. Now I know why.

I saw Masekela once in the late '80s at the Berkeley Greek, a show that also featured sets by John McLaughlin & Miles Davis. I must say I was underwhelmed with his performance that night so I never saw him again, but he was clearly a legendary player in the jazz world.

On it goes.

I saw Hugh play a few times, all with Paul Simon. It was a pleasure.

Judit, did you see him at the Monterey Pop Festival?

I don't remember seeing him there, but surely could have. There's a lot I don't remember from that weekend and I missed some people.
