RIP Hank Greenwald

Forums:

Yeah yeah, I know most have no idea who he was, but for a few of us Bay Area types of a certain age, we KNOW who Hank Greenwald was.

Back in the days of baseball (and basketball, because he called Warriors games for a long time too) before every game was televised, play-by-play announcers became friends, almost family, to fans who needed to listen to games on the radio to know what was happening, and Hank was just great as the Giants announcer for many years, virtually all of them BAD years, but he still made them fun and interesting to listen to.

Over those many years Hank lived with me in my car, my house, my work, even my bedroom; how much closer can one person be to another?

He was funny, he knew the game, he respected the game. He didn't have a home run call, that's how cool he was.

I've always remembered something he said once during a game when a player or a coach or someone had just had a baby... "Bats right, throws up."

I loved that guy.

Listened to his Warrior broadcasts back in the sixties -- before BIG MOUTH Bill King came along.

I vaguely remember his Giants broadcasts early eighties before I left. Lon was always the man for the Giants...for me.

 Nice writing heathenlance.  Thanks

And Clark hits it up the middle, into center-field, base hit!!! Maldonado scores! Here comes Butler...on his way to third is Thompson, the Giants lead three to one!!! And Superman has done it again!

Twenty-seven years of waiting have come to an end! The Giants have won the pennant!!

RIP Mr Greenwald

I posted this on fb the other day.

I remember being at the Fresno County Fair and sitting by myself listening to the Giants play the Yankees in the world series. Lon Simmons and Russ Hodges("The Giants Win The Pennant!!!") Until Recently, the best duo ever. We are so lucky to have Kruk and Kuip! That said, we have had some great ones along the way, Hank Greenwald first among them. RIP.

Lon Simmons- Mets/ Giants BRAWL .....ya'll

Following that link(Lloyd's), there is a "What's My Line" show with Russ Hodges.

That Giants Mets fight audio is amazing. Thanks!

Giants fans have been blessed with some of the best broadcasters ever. For me Lon Simmons is forever number 1.

Hank Greenwald did great service to the team and the fans, and yes those were some lean years. Rest in peace.

Seems like the sounds of my youth are fading faster these days. RIP Hank Greenwald.
