My association with Vince and Gloria goes way back. Vince and I worked together in the holography biz. When Gloria scored the Manasha nanny gig (and Vince eventually became Jerry's assistant), it opened up a whole new world for them (and I certainly benefited from occasional pre-Internet drip down innie knowledge and privileges).
A lot of the (probably jealous) GD family in late 80s early 90s wondered, "Who are these odd people who are taking care of Jerry on a daily basis?" They thought the worse -- that Vince was possibly supplying Garcia with drugs because he naturally looked a little shady and wasn't part of the music scene. Meanwhile the truth was that Gloria was helping take care of Jerry's new daughter and eventually Jerry (who lived alone) and she was trying to get Jerry to eat better while filling the fridge with (uneaten) health food. And buying him new tee shirts.
And Gloria didn't drive so Vince was always hanging around anyway so he became a de facto go-fer for Jerry. Taking video tapes back to the store. Meeting the pool cleaning guy. Sending their daughter to pick Jerry up when he crashed his car on 101. Stuff like that. They weren't enablers -- they were just ignorers. They were merely Deadheads thrust into the inner, inner non-musical circle and who's gonna tell Jer how to live his life?
Gloria was also the Glo in VinGlo Designs. A failed get rich quick scheme selling authorized holographic merch.
I only knew them in the day as heads trying to get by like anyone else...I purchased some signed OG Garcia art prints from Vince many moons ago , I know at one point they had the largest lawsuit filed against the Garcia estate, no clue how that resolved.
"Among those who filed suit: Personal manager Vincent DiBiase who says he was supposed to take over managing Garcia's art business and will lose $15.6 million in profits on art that would have been used on watches and jewelry. Nora Sage, who was also going to do something with Garcia artwork, is seeking $12 million. "
Vince, bless his soul cause he had good intentions, was never the best businessperson (more of a dreamer than a details guy) and unfortunately never hit the jackpot in the celebrity art business. Garcia, who was really getting into digital art using a Mac, never wanted to be in the art business himself, so he graciously let others deal with the commercial arrangements -- thereby making Vince, his personal assistant (not his personal manager -- that's a stretch), a partner. Vince got to collect, organize and publish Jerry's more recent fine art sketches and paintings, while Nora as I recall, got the tie biz. I remember at one point (93?) Vince arranged a somewhat prestigious art exhibit in Japan, which Jerry blew off at the last minute (ostensibly because of health issues, i.e., drugs couldn't be procured).
I still kick myself for not buying stuff when I was exploring a room full of newly signed Garcia artist proofs and prints, but I had no money back then. I did get one, Dog Beating Pan.
After Jerry died, Deborah and her lawyers contested everything and got all the best stuff and Vince was left with what he was given personally and rights to sell some art and a small settlement. For a while everyone (except Phil) hated him for being a vulture, but he did actually have a thing going with Jerry. He recently auctioned off a lot of what was left.
Fitting to add what Phil said in his book: “The DiBiasis were a steadfast, loving couple, with grown children, who had formed the only real constant in Jerry's life (other than his music) throughout the turbulent comings and goings of girlfriends, his illnesses, and the demands on his time and energy from every direction imaginable. Vince acted as Jerry's personal assistant, as well as his liason for the commercial end of his artwork projects ... Gloria was the rock around which all the currents swirled... ."
RIP sweet Gloria. She was a wonderful warm and caring woman. I spent an evening recently at their house for a few hours as her health was beginning to get the best of her. I played Harvest Moon and she sang every word with me. I will miss her very much. She came to many of my shows over the years. It always made me feel good to see her.

Interesting commentary.
Interesting commentary.
I caught my last Grateful Dead show on this date in 1995 - Silver Bowl Las Vegas.
Borrowed a laminate and was standing at the bottom of the stairs backstage with Jerry and John Cutler up there chatting at the catering table.
Jerry seemed in good spirits.
The show was great - band was on but Jerry was quite lost on Unbroken Chain.
