The album A Salty Dog (1969) is still among my favorite albums. It's beautiful, especially loud, starting with the song Salty Dog.

from the youtube comments: That heartbeat of Brooker, Trower and Wilson was just so intricate and cool.
I always considered PH a bit soft for my liking,, too something,, polished, fine tuned, weak, mature. My older sister who hated rock music used to play em. She'd play conquistador, and to get back at her for the torture, I'd follow it up with Live At Leeds.
I always thought Martin Scorsese's use of A Whiter Shade of Pale in his short film Life Lessons (in the anthology film New York Stories) was pretty brilliant.
Speaking about JGB's reconfigured lineup in 1981 w/Melvin Seals & 2 backup singers on Lost Live Dead Blogspot...
Kahn and Garcia had decided to construct the Garcia Band along the lines of 1960s R&B bands, who in turn had built their sound around gospel music of the same era. The essence of that sound was a pounding, rhythmic piano, juxtaposed against a warm, swirling Hammond organ sound. For most pop music fans, even today, Ray Charles was the best known exponent of this sound, but numerous other soul hits followed this format. Amongst rock bands, the best known exponents were Procol Harum and The Band, both of them influenced by classic R&B and influential to Garcia over the years.
Procol Harum had many fine moments, but I always thought A Whiter Shade Of Pale was overplayed. Seems like Mr. Brooker got to live a long and productive life following his muse, though, and really, what more could you ask for?
