RIP Ed “Kookie” Byrnes

Forums:

Loved 77 Sunset Strip. He helped pave the way for hip slang phrases on TV. Rip.

77 Sunset Strip was must-see watching and for a while "Kookie" was the biggest crush around. Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Roger Smith, Richard Long (from 1960 to 1961) and Edd Byrnes. I remember the theme song as cooler and less upbeat than this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZraVGNv42Bk

The next one up on Youtube was the Ballad of Paladin, Have Gun Will Travel. Paladin was played by Richard Green.

Which made me think of The Adventures of Robin Hood, 1950's, starring Richard Greene. It was on on Monday nights and was the talk of the schoolyard on Tuesdays.

Well, then there was also Davy Crockett

We dug the Kook

I'd forgotten the Connie Stevens/Edd "Kookie" Byrnes song. Wow!

Judit it seems we watched a lot big the same shows. Most people probably don't know that Roger Smith was forced to leave the show due to doctors discovering a blood clot in his brain. He was married to Ann Margret in the mid 60's and made an acting comeback as a co- star in the tv series Mr Roberts until he was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a nerve/ muscle disorder which forced him to retire from acting. He then devoted himself to managing her career. They were married for 50 years until his death in 2017 and he was hugely responsible for guiding her career especially her comeback in Las Vegas.

Daaammmmmmm you mutherfuckers be oooooooooold

Maybe so, but at least I got to see the Grateful Dead with Pigpen.

Niiiiiiice, who else ? Jimi ? Janis ? Jim ? Beatles ? Storyline please.

Another one from my childhood gone.  That show was a classic.

RIP.

And yes, "Have Gun, Will Travel" was a great show, and it had a great theme.

Judit, did you watch "My Mother the Car"?

Cool fact....

"Byrnes was married from 1962-71 to actress Asa Maynor (she played the stewardess in the famous Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet," starring William Shatner)."

Lloyd answered my question.  (Same Kookie?)

A bit before my time.

Ok I'll play and I am 67 so I also remember the golden years on the Western on TV

The Rifleman with Clint Walker, later in the Dirty Dozen, Wanted Dead oe Alive with "Mr Cool" Steve McQueen no other detail needed, Rawhide with Mr Eastwood, , Cheyenne can't remember the star right now and Maverick, oh don't forget Bat Masterson

77 Sunset was a classic, of course let's not forget Route 66 with Martin Milner later of Adam 12 and Then Came Bronson, and one not many remember Coronet Blue with frank Converse

oops Rifleman was Chuck Connors, who also played for the Celtics and Dodgers, Walker was Cheyenne

Have Gun Will Travel. Paladin was played by Richard Greene

I'm old not dead, lol had to look it up , Richard Boone

Maybe so, but at least I got to see the Grateful Dead with Pigpen.

amen to that brother oh and for the next post down, all but the beatles, those tickets were hard to get

Just a heads up. A  lot of those shows, most of them, are still showing on several channels.  SEWS (Encore Westerns),  FETV(Family Entertainment), and several others.  SEWS is commercial free.

I set up my DVR to record some Twilight Zone on the SYFY channel on NYE.  I now have over a hundred of them to watch. Commercials though.....

Didn't see the Beatles or Jimi. Saw the Doors in summer of 68, and how's this for a show, Janis, The Temptations and Credence on the same bill.

Loved all those old westerns including Maverick with James Garner, Jack Kelly and occasionally Roger Moore, Bat Masterson with Gene Barry, Wanted: Dead or Alive with Steve McQueen. But my favorite show from the late 50's to mid 60's was Perry Mason. Still watch the reruns today. Had a huge crush on Barbara Hale.

My brain can't quite process the idea of Roger Moore in a western.smiley

As a city slicker, maybe.

He appeared as Bret and Bart's European cousin Beau.

That tracks.

A cowboy with a European flair.

Right, Richard Boone, not Richard Green.

And Johnny Crawford, the kid from The Rifleman. had a locker across the hall from mine at Hollywood High ('63-'64). He wore that fringed jacket almost everyday.

>>> Judit, did you watch "My Mother the Car"? <<<

Nope, I didn't have a TV from '64 til a few years later.

Jamspace, original Perry is still a favorite, but Barbara Hale didn't do a thing for me. Later, I loved Rockford Files. Jim Garner did do something for me, as did his car and the way he drove it.

I've probably seen every Rockford 5 or 6 times over the yrs.    MMTC was pretty bad.

Perry mason is still on FETV.  Maverick, Wanted DOA,  SEWS

Was talking to a childhood friend about all this and he reminded me that our Saturday morning lineup used to include these shows.
Tales of the Texas Rangers, Rin Tin Tin, My Friend Flicka, The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers and Sky King. I remember we couldn't wait to be playing outside a lot. When did we find the time to watch all this shit?

Slip, Satch and the rest of the Bowery Boys

And Louie! Bowery Boys! How could I forget them? Right on.

This would probably do with a thread itself but who was your favorite comedy team? Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, Martin and Lewis or the Three Stooges. I visited the Stoogeum in Pennsylvania last year. Very cool, but my favorites were Abbott and Costello.

Don't forget Hopalong Cassidy!
