RIP Charucki

Forums:

Damn, another one gone. :-(

That is sad to hear. He was a nice guy all the times I interacted with him, on the job and off.

Rest in peace.

I happened to find myself at TxR tonight for the Anders Osborne/Big Head Todd acoustic duo show, and Phil Lesh happened to find himself there as well.

Phil made a very nice, heartfelt statement about Charucki before he began playing.

(And as always, he played so damn well)

Chris Charucki worked for many years with Bob Weir, Furthur, The Dead & Dead & Co. (and at the Fillmore and other local places before that). He kept things as even keeled as could be hoped for, working with that crowd (he was one of the two who ran out and propped Bob up after he collapsed at the Capitol).

I have friends who knew him well who are pretty broken up by this. My dealings with him were minimal, but he was always nothing but crusty kind to me.

On it goes.

The first night of one of the Furthur runs at Nokia/Best Buy Theatre in NYC I was out front with all the other credentialed photographers. The venue, unknown to all of us, had instituted a policy of not distributing photo passes to anyone that did not already have a hard ticket...which was all of us. All of us where reaching out to the media contact for the band and were not getting any answer. The togs with a bit of experience knew, from past experience, that sometimes a media person is not on site or doing something else and the best bet was to chill, despite venues attempt to have us move along. Around 10 mins before the show, a large amount of our crew left figuring it was just one of those nights that happen in the dysfunctional business world of rock and roll. Finally one of the experienced photographers got a hold of Charuki. Chris came out gathered up the photographers he knew from the past and said come with me. He marched right up to security with us and when blocked from taking us inside, he looked directly at the head security guy and said, "These photographers are approved (in his booming voice) by ME and I'm taking them inside. If you don't like it, well, you can just go FUCK yourself!" He then, with us in tow, pushed his way inside, past all the security that was attempting to stop him. into the packed floor, parting the crowd like Moses, and up to the photo pit.

The following night there was no problems at all.

God's speed, Chris.
