I still remember browsing the SF State Bookstore in 1976 and running across "A Signpost to New Space", the Rolling Stone interviews with him and Garcia.  It was a revelation.

Absolutely, the guy was in naive the extreme.  Even Jerry commented on it.   But in retrospect, The Greening of America was nothing but naive sentimentality so that isn't a surprise.  He was honest about his enthusiasm though. 

Apparently he didn't have a sexual experience until he was 43.
